The Mirror reports that Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan has said that the Geordies have to reach the 40-point mark to avoid being relegated from the Premiership at the end of the season.
Keegan is quoted as saying that Newcastle need to win 4 of their remaining 9 matches in the Premiership this season. KK warns:
People have said it might take fewer than 40 points to be safe this year but I don’t think so.
It’s always been 40 points in the past, with one exception, and it will always be 40 points in the future.Winning four out of 16 matches wasn’t a big ask, but four from nine is very different.
We have some big games coming up against sides also at the bottom. If you beat them, you are not only picking up points but you are stopping them getting points.
We need a win for confidence. If we can get a win, then we can play the way we want to and that will help us.
Keegan took over the manager’s role at St. James’ Park 8 matches ago and has yet to lead the Geordies to a win. A victory will certainly fall by Newcastle’s way but the Toon army can only hope that the win doesn’t come too late.
