Tottenham 2-0 Portsmouth; three things you learned from this match?

March 22, 2008

So Tottenham, far from struggling in their lame duck end of the season, have been rattling off some good results against some pretty strong opposition. Hot on the heels of their 4-4 “thrilla” with Chelsea they took on Portsmouth at the Lane at did a number on them, winning 2-0, courtesy of late goals from Bent and O’Hara.
Tottenham appear to be revelling in the idea that altough there is nothing left for them to play with, they can still mess with other clubs ambitions, today applying a not inconsiderable dent to Portsmouth’s European dreams.

Tottenham 2-0 Portsmouth

Darren Bent 79, Jamie O’Hara 80

What three things did you learn from this game?

    1. Ramos is a fine tactician. (Avram “Rodney Trotter” Grant, take note)
    2. Huddlestone is a star rising, with a passing range and ability 2nd to none.
    3. Aaron lennon has lost his place in the starting 11 for sure.

  2. Azza does it again

1.Bent aint that bad. 2. Lennon is struggling.3. Newcastle game is going to be a cracker next week

1.Lennon looks better running into the middle rather than down the line where he could have got there by beating 11men twice, but would still fuck up the cross, which makes Lennon as a winger pointless
2.Bent looked well up for it and sharper than he has all season and I think could start scoring a few now.
3.Keane and Berbs are the best partnership in the Prem.we just need someone to help supply them. We await the return of Bale with smiles on our faces.

    1. Bent isn’t a write-off.
    2. Lennon is due for some serious coaching in crossing the ball
    3. Chimbonda didn’t look like a player about to be sold - he was the MOTM.

    Three things I learned…?
Pompey do not have strength in depth - this was a very poor Pompey side without five first choice players.
The assistant referees cannot be relied upon - Chimbonda was a good two yards offside for the set-up of Spurs first goal.
Finally, if Defoe hadn’t been unfairly banned from playing, Pompey might have got something from the game - though they deserved little.

    3things for pete
1.Defoe wouldnt have caused our back line a problem. All teams have to do is stick a man on him. hes too selfish to be any good.
2.we out played you thro the whole game
3.your sounding a little bitter there

1- Jenas will have to fight hard to regain his place. On a performance like that, the Hudd should retain his place, and while Zokora played ok, i think O’hara should start next to the Hudd against Newcastle.

2- Tarrabt deserves a run in the team. Whilst Steeeed played ok, it was still quite a tired performance from him. This would be a good time to give Adel the chance what he can do and finally put to rest between us Yids “is the kid more than just a flash harry fancy dan and can he become our ronaldo?”

3- As a couple of you have said, Bent is not a write off. Personally, given the choise between him and Defoe, i’d rather have kept JD. BUT, Bent has the ability to stretch teams in a way the Jermaine never really did, i.e. our second goal today anginst Pompey.

Unfortunately, we cant play with 12 men. I think next year, with seven spots on the bench,we can afford to be more adverturous with our formation, maybe playing with only three at the back with the Hudd and/or O’hara dropping back as required. This would allow us to accomodate Berbs, Keano and Bent at the same time.

    What say you??

ha ha! i’d love to see a back three relying on o’hara to get back. relegation would beckon. ever wonder why no-one in the prem plays just three at the back?

don’t give up your day job.

    1) as i said before bent needs time, mentally coming to us with a huge price tag, and playing for a big team has forced him to change his game. Play the way he did for charlton he will be fine.

    2) No jenas in there giving the ball away, personally i have never thought he is good enough. hope he goes same applies to lennon unless his crossing improves.

    3) Sted sucks, blood adel and give him the taste and experience so he has something to build upon next season.

    1. huddlestone still isn;t ready to start every game, his main attribute his passing was a bit up and down today - too many stray passes.

    2. zokora just isn’t good enough, I guess we knew that before today.

    3. alan hutton really is going to be class.

  11. on March 22nd, 2008 6:45 pm

is Lennon the Glen Helder of his generation?

    Try Taarabt over Lennon.

Malbranque and Huddlestone were great If we buy a left winger over the summer but not a right winger, we could try Malbranque on the right, since he’s after all right footed. At least he can CROSS! Malbranque is underrated.

Chimbonda should at the very least be kept as a utility defender or to rotate with Hutton.

i’d try steed back at fulham, always been highly overrated. runs in circles never goes anywhere and how he doesnt get sent off more god only knows

haha you spurs are hilarious. on friday bent was terrible and you couldnt wait to see the back of him in the summer. now, after one game and one goal, he is back to being ok. haha

    1. Bent was never bad, just over-pressurized by his price-tag or injured.

    2. We should try out Taarabt… but has anyone ever seen him actually cross the ball?

    3. Train up Chimbonda’s left foot and make him a natural LB! :P

    1. Don’t play your B team against spurs - time we bought a few squad players.

    2. Get Kanu off after an hour before he dips, and sub Utaka when he’s having a mare.

    3. You don’t have to win to stay sixth. ;-)

2.Bent is going to be our best investment, long term
3.Dawson, Lee, Zokora, Rocha, Tainio, Malbranque, Jenas can all say bye bye

Bent, Taarabt, Lennon and Huddlestone for midfield, Hutton, Woodgate, King, Bale for defence, Keane and Berbatov up front, new keeper x 2 please, goodbye Robinson and Cerny

Steed has been our best player this season, sure he’s lost his creative edge but this guy could easily be our defensive midfielder, all he ever does is break up play now. Though personally i’d say given his age, a squad player at most.

Bale will be like a new signing next season.

Woodgate is playing like hes been part of our team for years. This shows the guys class! What a buy!

    on March 23rd, 2008 12:26 pm

1 - Berbatov and Keane need some supply, they can’t create their own goals all the time, too much pressure on them, crying out for a world class creative midfielder, Steed tries his best, can’t fault his effort but we need a bit more now

2 - Lennon’s crossing is woeful, always has been, and will be for the foreseeable future

3 - Woodgate and Hutton were absolutely superb signings, would like one more centre back of Woodgate/King’s calibre just as back-up for when either are injured.

    Im having a fourth…

4 - Huddlestone is impressing more and more with every performance, shooting is superb, passing is effortless, and getting fitter, which is the only thing that was suspect.

Definitely be top 6 next year, I’d take that. COYS

im well up for giving taarabt a chance on the left and moving malbranque to the right for a game, see how it goes…..not being able to cross as a professional winger is pathetic really….lennon needs help, or to be sold!

Steed hasnt been our best player at all. What it is, He’s been better than last year, when he was more shit then at fulham. He’s so over rated its unreal.

Portsmouth played their B team. Get real you twat. you dont have a Bteam. Your A Team is our rejects

i cant believe the shit people are writing on here: all of a sudden bent is great after touching the ball twice in 15 mins, steed is a good squad player, lennon needs competition, jenas and hudd should be our starting CMs, berbatov has to stay, and we should play 4-4-2.

and what the fuck has taarabt ever done when he has come on? he has looked awful whenever i have seen him play, too selfish, too many tricks, no end product, he needs his time in the reserves until ramos has a pre season

Matt, face it your a second rate team with a bunch of rejects. your bitter after being completely outplayed yesterday and your having the first good season for about 30yrs.
Just because you missed 2 or 3 players yesterday doesnt mean you had a B team out. All the teams in the prem are missing players. We had Bale,King,Jenas out from our 1st choice line up. not to count many other injuries. That doesnt make it a B team. it makes it a squad. Get over your one off season and brighten up

Spurs were unlucky during the 1st half and Malbranque played in a deeper role (than of late) which seemed to make him invisible throughout and thats a bit of a change as usualy he becomes invisible only after 60mins - a bit like the way Mickey Hazard used to, LOL. Its been a couple of months since our Steed performed up to expectations.

I thought Chimbonda who appears to be improving recently, had an excellent first half and remains a useful squad player

The penny appears to have finally dropped with Ramos in relation to Jenas who is far too inconsistent and there seems to be a bit of a yella streak in the boy or is he a man????

  28. Yid!
    on March 23rd, 2008 5:07 pm

Lets not get to far in front of ourselves, Bent had ‘A’ good game, don’t think Keane or Dimi will be worried just yet.

    1. Why just Jenas get in the side ahead of Huddlestone, Jenas is awful, can’t deliver a set peice, has no real skill and is not a match winner, don’t get me wrong, i’m not saying Tom is, but he uses the ball so much better.

    2. Ramos will be a success, there’s a few games this season where we’ve gone behind, and Ramos has changed it and we’ve got results that Jol would have fucked up, infact there’s a few games where’ve been in front Jol would have fucked up.

    3. We need a few more squad players who have a bit of quality, bar yesterday, there are times when we’re struggling and i look at the bench and think there isn’t one player who could come on and change a game, depending if Tom is starting of course.
Regarding Taarabt, i’ve only seen him a few times he is a livewire who would cause problems, bar the Derby game where he was a show boating arse, he has his moments, away to Arsenal he came on and should have won us a second Pen when he was bundled over, bit of education in using the ball at the right time and it’s not all about ball juggling, he could be superb.

And Pompey Pete, Chimbonda was on side you arse, look at the replays!!!

    1. Lennon was always a poor crosser. His only skill is to run fast. Sell him.

    2. Wow do we miss Bale!

    3. Given our current squad, I’d play O’Hara on the right (can he cross?) with Hudd and Jenas in the middle and Zokora as a defensive substitute for either Jenas or Hudd if we have a lead. My real preference is to repalce both Jenas and Zokora.

    COYS!

  30. Phil
    on March 24th, 2008 2:16 pm

NY Spurs Fan, how can you say play O’Hara on the right? We’ve been crying out for a left footer, and when we actually get one you wanna put him on his wrong side?? Having Chimbo, Malbranque and O’Hara all having to cut in to disribute the ball would only slow us down even further.

    1. Pompey are not going places! They had a chance to close on Everton in 5th and instead chose try and play out a 0-0 draw rather than go for a win. No excuses regarding squad players being used, you always play to win! Can’t understand that at all!

    2. (Not a new fact) but Bent plays his best football as a lone striker, exploiting his pace, getting in behind the defence.

    3. Lennon needs a lot of final ball practice, and maybe should be dropped for a couple of games (from starting line up, still use as an impact player against tiring legs).

I can see no harm in giving Tarrabt a few starts, we’ve nothing to lose after all. Then we can swtich Steed to the right, and give the kid a real go!

    Team for barcodes:
    Robbo
    Chimbonda Woody King/Dawson Hutton
    Tarrabt Hudd Zokora Malbranque
    Berba Keano

    Result: 3-0

Hmmmm, ok Spurs won….but are they still in the bottom half? IF Ramos so fucking good why are you still fighting with Midlesborough and Newcaste?

  32. JimB
    on March 28th, 2008 6:45 pm

Why are Spurs still in the bottom half……..umm, possibly because, when Ramos took over, Spurs were in the relegation zone with a paltry 7 points from 11 games and they were totally devoid of any confidence?

Ramos has done an excellent job of turning the league season around to one of mid table anonymity (but not boredom - White Hart lane has seen far more goals than any other Premiership ground). He’s also, by the way, won a trophy.

With a full pre season behind him and with a clutch of new players that suit his preferred style of play, Ramos should take Spurs back up towards the top five next season and - who knows - maybe even challenging for the Champions’ League places.

Got something to say?
