Man City fish for 50m Spurs pair, but why would they bite?

I guess Spurs fans shouldn’t be too surprised at this level of interest in their Bulgarian star Dimitar Berbatov, but can anyone explain to me why the hell would the striker go to Eastlands? Sven has also shown interest in off form winger Aaron Lennon, but surely he too would have little to gain in moving to Man City.

A 32m move for Bulgarian hitman Dimitar Berbatov has already been authorised by City owner Thaksin Shinawatra and Eriksson also wants Aaron Lennon bringing a total bill of around 50m for the White Hart Lane duo (Daily Mirror).

No offence to the Blues but why would Dimitar join the City revolution, it seems that both sides are on a similar page in terms of development and I don’t see Berbatov upping sticks for Manchester, although given Lennon’s poor performances of late it could be that he has no choice in the matter as Juande Ramos may have lost patience in the England wide-man.

Apparently, according to the press, Berba is desperate to go to Man City so that he can join up with his mate, Martin Petrov. It seems to have escaped the hacks at the News Of The World that Berba and Petrov have happily played for different club teams for most, if not all, of their club careers.

Clearly, this is nothing more a silly, slow news day story - or laughable optimism on the part of Man City. Berba wants to play in Europe next season and, as things stand, Man City face a struggle even to qualify via the Intertoto Cup. Under Ramos, Spurs are getting better and better and, with a large transfer kitty at his disposal, there is real hope for next season. Furthermore, Spurs play the kind of football that Berba loves to play.

City, by contrast, are entirely dependent on the further benificence of Sinawatra and they don’t play the kind of football that Berba loves. Chances of him moving to Eastlands therefore - zero. And I think that 99% of City fans are sensible enough to realise that.

It is possible that Berba could be tempted elsewhere in the summer. But he will only leave for a top club like Real Madrid, AC Milan or Man Utd.

We’ve got our own Bulgarian striker almost ready at City without going for the older player (no offence to the Yids). The big money is aimed elsewhere. This is just a smokescreen. 1. sven will never have the budget to be able to spend 30/35 mill on a single player. no matter what the speculation on how much shinawatra has or has not.

2.why would berba leave spurs for city?????…..its a move that makes absolutely no sense. we have finished top 5 last 2 seasons, and although we had a bad start this campaign,,the future under the tactical mastery of Ramos, one of the best managers in europe (6 trophies in 2 years), is surely very bright. add to that what i beleive to be a very talented squad and a club that is the 11th richest in the world, and can afford to add top , top quality players,….. you start to see what im getting at. this proposed transfer is as likely as kaka going to everton or pompey in the summer.

3. IF berba does leave, it will obviously be for a champs league team. but not just any champs league team, but only a team capable of winning the trophy. so that narrows it to say, man u..chelsea ( although i dont think we will sell to a prem team- to much for the fans to take!!!!) barca, real M, inter milan, A.C….etc etc

Secondly, whatever Joe Lewis has lost or not lost in the collapse of Bear Stearns is of supreme indifference to Spurs. Lewis has never ploughed money into Spurs and we are able to spend big in the transfer market purely because we are a very well run club with a large fan base. We don’t need a rich benefactor.

i stated we had the best Youth acadamy in the UK & also stated seperately that all our Youth are Internationals & quality, for yid to call them cr*p is just childish & pathetically jealous.

the youngsters i menioned are all on the first team list, some or loaned out, others on the bench learning their trade, all again Internationals & if you do your homework i can garuantee you that you would take any one of them to spurs if you had the ability.

But we sell it out for every game - as we would if we had a 48,000 capacity - despite huge ticket prices. City, on the other hand, play to some 8,000 empty seats for most home games, despite comparatively low ticket prices.

And you’re right that City do have a really good Academy at the moment. And some good young players. Spurs’ Academy was neglected for a while but is now a priority and will soon start producing. Meanwhile, for every good City youngster, Spurs have one of their own - Huddlestone, Lennon, Bale, Taraabt, O’Hara, Gunter etc. Plenty more coming through the ranks.

And while Sven has an excellent managerial history, I think even the most one eyed City fan would concede that Ramos’ recent record is superior and that Ramos’ style of football is infinitely more entertaining.

As to Spurs not having the same potential as City, I presume that you mean that Spurs don’t have City’s potential to go more than 30 years without winning a trophy?

For the economically illeterate JG. Leiws has lost about £450million and has only £2.2 billion left. He has the advantage of having made it legally and is not under any investigation for theft or abusing human rights. He made his money in international markets not by stealing from his countrymen.

petrov went to city for 2 reasons only.

1. it was a quarantee that he would play week in week out, with no real competition for his place….that was not the case if he had come to spurs ( petrov said this himself in one of the 1st interviews he gave after joining city)

2. money…..although spurs are the 11th richest club in the world and in another league to city ( who i dont think are in the top 50?) we have a strict wage structure in place. untill petrov proved himself he would of been on 25 or 30k per week….city were willing to give him 50k per week…..these are the 2 reasons why martin petrov plays for city.

all this rubbish between man city and spurs fans, city do have alot of potential, but so do spurs. we both are in very similar posisitions, we both have very wealthy owners (although city look like they are going to rely on theirs much more than spurs do), we both have top managers and we both have very good young players.

realistically though, i don’t believe for a second that manchester city fans wouldnt be happy if berbatov signed, whether that be for £20m or £35m, though i think there’s more chance of tottenham signing one of your stars, just because we are in europe and we are the more likely team to reach that 4th spot.

if we combined the two team when fully fit it would probally go like this…. in my opinion:

Hart… Richards, Woodgate, King, Bale… Jenas, Johnson, Hamann, Petrov… Keane Berbatov…. so we just edge it, 6 to 5, however, we have far more strength in depth.

though, if you look at our players there, i can’t see you signing anyone or having anyone in your squad to reach the potential of our players, i can’t see city finding two forwards who combined can reach 50 goals in a season, i can’t see you finding two centre backs who are as good as king and woodgate, and i’d be amazed if you could find another left back anywhere in the world, from any team with as much potential as gareth bale… where if we switch it around, there are keepers as good as hart, not taking anything away from the boy, he looks very good, but there are better, richards, fair enough, he’s fantastic, and has been one of my favourite players outside spurs since he broke through, johnson another boy with huge potential, but there is better, hammann, he’s on his last legs, many better players in his position now, petrov, very good, i envy city for signing him. overall though, i think tottenham are much closer to that 4th spot at the moment, but the summer will tell more.

Good to read a balanced view from Yido88, the vast majority of other Spurs fans posts are laughable. Of course City fans would welcome a player like Berb, the guy is class but I don’t see him coming to City the same as I don’t see Spurs hanging on to him. As far as youth is concerned there can be no doubt that at City we have the best acadamy in the PL although i agree that Spurs also have some good young players. Ramos has done a great job and has a fantastic cup record but to say that he is superior to Sven is a joke, he’s won trophies at all his clubs and has the ability to bring in top talent. As I see it Spurs and City and in a similar place at the moment but when you consider that City were relegation fodder last year and Spurs were billed as potential top 4 it’s clear that City have made more progress this season. Next year we’ll see a much better free flowing City side, if Spurs lose Berbatov I think you’ll be lucky to make top 6. We just beat you 2-1, are 1 point off 6th spot with 7 games to go, I think most City fans are happy with that at this point in our progression, don’t let the Caling Cup win paper over what has been a very average season when you Spurs fans expected so much.

Yido88, great post. Hard to argue with your selection except I’d maybe go Hart, Corluka, Richards, King, Bale; maybe Elano for Jenas (close call) and I’d prefer Fernandes (fast improving young player, great work rate) to Hammann

And yes, I’d be delighted if Berbatov signed for City. But I don’t think it will happen.

spurs wanting to break the top 4 is only right and proper and in no way deluded (as alot of football fans will say) when u consider that we have been 5th for 2 seasons back to back…..as for us not getting carried away with the carling cup, i think thats a silly comment, as the carling cup has placed us in europe again…..when the season comes to an end shortly, city may or may not make the uefa places…but u may finish 2 or 3 places above us. but which is the sucess…..what would you have taken if offered- 7th or 8th and no uefa place. or a trphy and european football again next year?….and remember weve got those 2 things even though we have under acheived this season…..as for ramos and sven….i have a great deal of respect for sven…he has won trophies in 3 different leagues…..but in fairness that was some time ago….Ramos has won 6 trophies in the last 2 years and took sevilla into the champions league AND into a position where they could of beaten barca and real madrid to the la liga title with only 2 games to go! ( in my mind a much greater acheivement than all his cups). he done this at sevilla WITHOUT a rich owner or substantial funds. …so for me its obviously Ramos all the way!!!…but well done on city making a huge improvement this season. i think it will be a long time again b4 you finish above us so enjoy!!!!!

Cartel_only…….In terms of improvement this year there is only one winner. Congrats on winning Carling cup and getting into Europe but what plans are in the pipeline to break into top 4? We only ever read about players leaving Spurs, there was no chat about Richards going to the lane when his contract was up in the air, you missed out on Petrov who you should have signed…..it is a sorry state of affairs when money can buy you sucess but thats how it is. City are been linked to your best player not the other way round, that in itself says something about our clubs ambition no matter the fact that it will never happen! I’ve always liked Spurs and the style of football you play but don’t rule City out of potential top 4 in not to distant future. Good luck in UEFA next year and good luck in keeping hold of the Berb, I think most people expect him to be moving on in the summer, probably to UTD I hate to say. Berbatov will not go Manchester City. He will go abroad, to a club he would definitly start most of the time. But that would only happen at the end of next season if we dont qualify for the Champions League, if we do Berbatov will stay. He can see how good Ramos is and what Ramos is doing at the club. Big shame we got knocked out by PSV, would of had Sporting Lisbon (i think?) which is a team we could of easily beaten.

Even though its been reported Berbatov could buy his contract out in the summer of 2009 for 1.8 million, but I dont see that happening since he loves the club and wouldnt screw us over like that.

How much the fans love him he wont get at any other club, a footballer will only be loved and truely appreciated by one club in their career as a footballer. He just wants to play Champions League football and win medals, if Tottenham could at least challenge for trophies and get in the Champions League he will stay at Tottenham for the rest of his career. Well he might leave when hes in his 30’s to play in Spain or Italy to do experience a different league and win something there.

He can become a legend at Tottenham like Greaves, Hoddle, Jennings etc

We just need to match his ambitions with signing top players that arnt over-rated and are consistent and we can make it into the top 4.

As for Aaron Lennon going to Manchester City for 18 million pounds, yes please. His final ball is poor which is 99% of the time, would rather have Bentley then him.

The facts are these.

Spurs can keep Berbatov at 32 million. He is a moody little shit who would be classed in the luxury player category.

This day and age in the premiership you need all the atributes to be a top class striker. Look at Drogba for the perfect example! (even though I think he is a twat).

Berbatov can make me feel depressed just by looking at him!

In relation to Sven vs Ramos… No comparison! Completely different style… Too soon to judge who will come out on top but at the moment Sven edges it.

City have a lot of young foriegn players thrown together in a couple of weeks with no pre season behind them.. Time will tell but I think next year you will see the real thing!

Firstly, this is paper talk. There is no way Berba will come to City and I will be surprised if he stays at Spurs much longer. The guy is quality and will probably end up at a real top club.

Secondly, I have to take issue with some Spurs fans giving it the big one. Sure, we’ve been sh1te for years but show some respect for a club that has been champions of this country since the last time you were and a team that has played more top flight games than you. Even head to head, you’ve had to be beat us 15 odd times to our 2 to catch up.

As for Ramos and Sven. Well, yes, I like the look of Ramos but to dimiss Sven so easily shows how little some Spurs fans know about football. Again, look at the stats and show some respect.

Attendances. Sure, we’ve dropped off a bit but historically your average attendance has never been that much more than ours. I can’t be bothered looking it up but I’ve never classed Spurs as ‘Well Supported’. I sure you’ll put me right, but I’m sure I saw empty seats at that recent PSV game….well loyal.

This rich list thing, yeah, Spurs turn over some seriously mullah. Some dick thought we’re not even in the top 50….I think we’re 21st. Again, look it up. But it means sod all. It just means that you’ve had more money to spend than most yet will still finsh behind Everton, Portsmouth, West Ham and even little old City.

The league table does not lie. We will finish above Spurs and are therefore the better team this year.

Oh and Remedy. I don’t diss Billy Nick and he had great players - particularly fond of John White, RIP. I coached a school team back in the early 60s based on the Spurs ‘push-and-run’ system and they won everything in sight.
I’m old enough to have seen both pre-Munich United and Spurs Double XI and I often wonder what would have happened if they’d met on the field of play. In all honesty, I reckon United would have edged it.

got to say a pretty sad debate overall. Being as obective as possible I don’t think one can doubt the potential of either club. However,

1. - Spurs have achieved more recently - top five finishes two years in a row and a trophy this year (albeit the Carling Cup, Chelsea still wanted to really win it)
2. - Whilst Sven has shown capabiliuty in the past it is just that - in the past. Ramos has a proven recent track record.
3. - Again both teams have good players and new managers - fair to say that Ramos started 12 games into the season at which point Spurs were already a whopping 18 points behind City (7 - 25). The gap is now just 10 points meaning with Ramos Spurs have gained 8 points on City.
4. - Spurs have a significantly better goal difference despite being lower in the league (+9 vs +2). I maintain this is a true measure of consitency.
5. - Also worth noting that Spurs have also been distracted by other competitions such as the CC and UEFA whilst City have concentrated on the league
6. - Sven bought a whole new team whereas Ramos has largely had to work with an inherited squad.

All in all, my point is the judgement should come next year when both managers will start with their own teams and on level points. My hoenst feeling is that Spurs will be the best of the rest (i.e. outside the top 4) by some margin.

Just my opinion..

Lets get real here City and Spurs fans, niether of us are top four class, and both of us (plus Villa, Everton and Newcastle) will never really break into that cartel for the next three or four years at least.

1 of course we would have Berbatov,

and if the money was right

2 of course Spurs would sell him.

3 He probably would not come to us and who can blame him.

Both clubs have great potential and both clubs have potential buying power, but the important word here is POTENTIAL out of the five teams I mention above Everton are nearest to the big four, but until all of us can consolidate and realise some of the potential the ‘big’ four will always be the big four and the rest of us will be also rans.

Spurs are one of the most successful teams of all time and you have the audacity to say that they aren’t a big club? That’s just stupid. I never disliked Spurs either. You would sell your left nut to have Berbatov, based on the fact that should you keep him happy, he almost always scores and has more on-ball skill than any striker I’ve seen for a long, long time. If you can keep him happy, Spurs have a gem on their hands. As for the kids debate, yes I am proud of the players coming through our ranks but talking of young talent, Spurs have some of the best. Bale, Huddlestone, O’ Hara, Lennon, Alnwick, Gunter and Taarapt? From what I have been told, Taarapt will be one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe some day.

As for Ramos and Sven, I’d have to think Ramos barely edges it, merely based on the fact that he is an absolute tactical genious, has already won something with Spurs, and has proven himself well at Sevilla.

On behalf of the City fans, I apologize to some Spurs fans, considering the fact that some of our lot sound like and are acting like complete idiots.

Hardy - You may never have classed Spurs as well supported. That’s probably because Spurs had too small a stadium for too long. Fact is, though, that Spurs’ all time average league attendance is third only Man Utd and Liverpool.

And you can hardly say that Spurs fans have been “giving it the big one” on this thread any more than the City fans.

Mighty Blue - you say that City are linked with Fabiano and David Villa. So what? So are Spurs. You should have learnt by now not to read too much into media speculation (just as no one should read too much into these silly Berbatov to City stories).

And your team and squad is no younger than Spurs’. And, given the recent publicity about Ramos’ regime (and the fact that Spurs comfortably beat City with 10 men), I very much doubt that City are any fitter.

Jealousy? Come back to us when City have won a trophy for the first time in over 30 years or when they qualify for Europe (other than via the fair play award) for the first time in 30 years and then we can start to talk about City not being jealous of Spurs. There’s a good lad.

JimB - I’m responding to Spurs slating us for having 8,000 empty seats. As I say, support wise we are not far off in 8th best all time. Indeed, it’s questionable if we’d have 8,000 empty seats if we’d not been through 30 odd trophless years. Besides, this small stadium lark only holds water in recent times….back in the 80’s we both had stadiums of 40k plus but averaged below that.

Oh, and the giving it large - I don’t necessarily agree with what might blue is saying. But I think he’s stopped short of saying Spurs are shite and like fooking Birmingham….

In any case it’s a moot point. Berba won’t come to City for a number of reasons, it’s a joke paper article which has nothing to do with the club. Not any opportunity for Spurs to spout utter garbage about my club.

The original poster that kicked off this thread asked and attempted to answer the question “Why should Berbatov go to City”. He concluded, reasonably enough, that both City and Spurs were “at a similar stage of development” so why would a top class striker swap one work-in-progress club for another? Seems fair enough to me.

Instead of rational discussion it prompted a torrent of anti-City abuse from the self-deluded single figure IQ brigade that every club seems to carry around with them but of which Spurs, currently, have more than their quota.

I could go on and on quoting figures to prove which is or was the bigger club, but surely anyone with half a brain can see it’s pointless? Some years ago City fans had to dig deep to shed all the delusions and get a grip of reality. I like Man City. A few years ago when you dropped a couple of divisions you still had great support, despite success. That is loyalty.

And I am a Spurs fan. I really don’t know why this argument is going on about big club this, big club that. Both clubs are on the up after some troubled times. Both have some key players they need to keep hold of to keep improving. I would say Spurs are slightly ahead as they have had a couple of good seasons prior to this one. But I would say that.

And I just wonder where all of the Eriksson knockers have gone. That man was treated badly. He had a decent record with England. Especially in comparison to McLaren.

Do us a favour and beat Arsenal twice a year…

1st of all, how can you name sven in the same league as ferguson, morinho and the paedophile. Sven is a two bob manager. What I can’t understand is why a bigger team than Spurs WOULD want him but you wouldn’t want him? Berbatov is quite clearly one of the best strikers in the World, let alone the Premiership, he would grace absolutely any team in Europe and if he did somehow end up at City then he would instantly be head and shoulders the best player there.

If Berbatov can be described as a one season wonder then I don’t know what you consider to be a consistent player…. He scored over 20 last season for Spurs, already has over 20 this season for them, scored over 20 in each of his three seasons before that at Leverkusen and also has over 30 goals in only 50 games for his country.

Some of his play is phenominal. He is completely two footed, great in the air, has some of the best ball control I’ve seen, can beat a player at will, has superb vision and ability to pick out a pass and is a great finisher. He can play as the out and out centre forward, the link player or up front on his own The fact that SAF would love to have him at Utd means that you are either completely clueless about football or are using the old classic of saying that you don’t want something simply because you know you can’t have it.

With the players and manager they now have at Spurs aligned with another sizeable transfer budget to spend this Summer I see no reason why Spurs cannot be challenging with Arsenal and Liverpool for third place next season, a back four of Hutton, Woodgate, King and Bale will be as good as any in the league and likewise for the pairing of Keane and Berbatov up front. I am sure that Ramos will bring in a new keeper and a couple of reinforcements in the midfield which should see Spurs really push on.

I am in fact a genuine fan, im a season ticket holder south lower at spurs and have been for the past ten years. I buy the home and away kit every season and i travel away when ever work allows.

I cried when spurs won the carling cup. i love the team in fact.

Sven is a real manager with years of experience at the top level in several different leagues around europe. He has the best contacts in global football out of all the premiership bosses and is respected as he respects.

The reason he has not one anything for 6 or 7 years is he was trying to get our shambles of a England team to a world cup or european cup final! Considering what he had to play with I think he did pretty good!

Like that 1 about us being a shit man utd…we regularly beat united including home and away this season…when was the last time spurs done the double over arsenal..except beating their reserves in the cup .look up the last 5 years spending in the premier league..spurs are 5th biggest spenders yet are mid table this season…city havs spent relatively nothing compared to spurs yet are above them having beaten them last week..oh and the 1 about the 10 men in the cup quarter final…errr what about the 4-3 at your place with 10 men,when being 3-0 down….typically spurs fans comments…

I’m a city fan and some of the comments made by both sides are simply embarrasing.

In fairness although the spuds have spent big they have also had a decent player turn over, which I would like to add is about half their spendings. That is certainly something I admire as we are loaning out too many poor players that will never break into out team.

As for Berbatov, I wouldn’t want him on his own, I’d like the strike force. I don’t think anyone can argue that Keane/Berbatov is the PREMIER strike force in the PL, 100 goals in 2 years is nothing short of superb and with Petrov’s quality it would be an impressive trio. £50m on those 2? Yes please.

I also saw talk that we should go for Henry/Fabiano/Villa… I don’t care how much potential we have, they are european quality players so unless we finish 5th (6th does not qualify for europe this year, thanks spuds) we have the same thing to offer as a host of other clubs in the PL (Toon, AV, WHU etc), so we would have to hope they would join us simply on virtue. That sort of talk is sikply ridiculous.

City’s priority should be to develop the talent we already have and bring in experience for them to learn from, we are a work in progress and I do not expect that to change for a few seasons yet, we don’t want to rush into things and have a poor start as \spurs have done after 2 successful seasons, I want consistency over a 38 game season and actually proove that we deserve our place as the likes of Everton have done this term.

you tool…..!!!!…..sven last won anything with lazio 8 years ago……and the reason why he done well at lazio is very simple…..he was handed a massive 274 million sterling over just 4 seasons by sergio cragnotti……bear in mind the prices of players 8 years ago, and what sort of team he could of got!!!!……i mean ffs, who couldnt be a success under those circumstances…..now fast foward to sevilla and Ramos……sevilla had not won anything in 50 years prior to his arrival. but 2 seasons later they had won 5 trophies including back to back UEFA cups. but with won big difference to sven….NO RICH OWNER, NO OPEN CHEQUE BOOK!!!!…..he then took sevilla into the champs league, and almost done the impossible by winning the la liga title, but was beaten to it with 2 games to go….since ramos have left, sevilla have crashed…..now onto the prem. 1 trophy already won, and a demonstration of what a good tactical manager can do to change games. i have yet to see sven really demonstrate very good tactics with his subs and team shape / formation change if needs be, halfway into a game. so good luck under sven………we will keep Ramos and follow in the footsteps of sevilla while he was in charge.

Cartel you tube! The gung ho approach favoured by Ramos is good fun but you will soon get board of drawing games 4 - 4 etc…

The more sophysticated approach employed by Sven has far more long term value over the course of a season and when it finally clicks into place after we have all the right players to play the system you will also see far more goals as well as being tight at the back!

Ramos is a cup winner true but his approach will not win you the premiership thats for sure!
