Gruff Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg recently revealed his hopes as he prepares to move to Italian giants Juventus at the end of this season.
Mellberg, who agreed the switch in January, wants to move away from the right-back mould he has recently found himself in. When he arrives in Turin he wants to state a case to be played in his preferred centre-back slot:
They consider me as a central defender, which is what Martin O’Neill used to see me as.
Last season, it worked really well with Martin Laursen and also at the start of this season when we played together.
It will be different in Italy.
He also expressed his delight to be joining such a big club, while not trying to damage his reputation in Birmingham:
Actually, it’s the first time that I will be joining a real top club who can, and wants, to fight for titles.
With all due respect to Aston Villa, they have never had the possibility to challenge in that way.
Olof has obviously not seen the DVD of the magic European Cup Final of 1982.
