Liverpool manager wants to put the chat amongst the pigeons

March 26, 2008

Why do you think that Javier Mascherano was so fired up for Liverpool’s match against Manchester United? He reminded one of Paul Gascoigne circa 1991 when the talented playmaker ran around the Wembley pitch like a headless chicken, eventually causing himself a nasty injury. Indeed, it’s hard to see the argument being put forward by Rafael Benitez, who must have witnessed his player fire off rounds of expletives before a first and then a second yellow card. Still, according to the official Liverpool website, the Spaniard is having none of it.

He said: “I would like to speak to Keith Hackett because it is important that we find a solution.

“At Liverpool, we respect the game, we respect the rules and we respect the referee, and it is important to remember that Mascherano was the first Liverpool player to be sent off in the league this season.”

Here’s a solution. Player enters the field of play. Stays within the rules of the game. Lets his football do the talking. Accepts that the referees decision is final at all times. Shakes hands with arbiter at the end of the game no matter what the result. It’s actually quite easy to follow these guidelines one likes to think.

Come on COS. We’ve had enough of this already. The guy’s a jerk, he’ll get 3 games; that’s the end of it. Nobody talks to me like that!

Steve you are a jerk. When have football players not been allowed to question a referee’s decision? Chelsea do it week in week out. Just because Steve Bennett got slated for not intervening with the Ashley Cole saga, he thought he’d give out cards for fun. It isn’t Rugby, players can question the referee with regards to the decisions he’s made. That is all that Mascherano was doing.

nah - i think the point is they can’t question the decision. never in the history of football has a ref dished out a yellow, gave a free kick etc and then, after some discusion with a player gone ‘actually, you’re right, bad call. no free kick, we’ll just tak a drop ball’. in other words - whats the fucking point. the rule of the game is only the captain can approach the ref. so thats it. everyone knows thats the rule. masch was agressively badgering the ref for most of the first half. he was already on a yellow. that makes him stupid and benitez should have told him off for it.

MUM you’re missing the point. The fact that players have been doing it for years is irrelevant. Its like the straw that broke the camels back - in this case, Mascherano was that straw unfortunately for him and Liverpool. Its about time something was done about it. Its nothing personal, but to keep on defending him you must be deluded.

I do think it’s time for Liverpool and Mascherano to forget about the whole incident and defeat at OT now and move on. There’s a very important game on Sunday (not to mention the CL games against Arsenal coming up too) and the worst thing that could happen would be for the club to dwell on this and let it overshadow the weekend’s derby. Take the punishment, learn from the mistake and concentrate securing 4th place and another European Cup in the trophy cabinet.

I gez, if Pierluigi Collina is a refree at Barclay’s Premier Lge matches, more players like John Terry, Javier Mascherano and Lampard will get red cards on monthly basis. Face it…Discipline on the pitches of England is ridiculous. Even rugby players don’t go raving n raging around the refree when they dun get decisions their way, fact is rugby is a much more intense n physical game than football..

Got something to say?
