Newcastle manager will battle to keep Tottenham target at St James’ Park

But will his struggle in vain? COS yesterday reported that Charles N’Zogbia could be on his way out of the north-east at the end of the season and join Tottenham Hotspur, thus continuing the latter’s ploy to sign young English talent.

However, the fabulous Shields Gazette have reported that the creative midfielder isn’t going anywhere in a hurry as far as manager Kevin Keegan is concerned. The Magpies boss insists that Zoggy has a future at St James’ Park as King Kev sets about trying to rebuild his team in the summer. Like Jonathan Woodgate, will all this be in vain?

He told the Gazette: “I still see it the same – we have from now until the end of the season.

“His future lies here for as long as we want because he’s got a three-year contract.

“I told him to get his head down and work hard and then we would come back to that at the end of the season. That’s the promise I made him, and that’s what we’ll do. That has not changed.”

Howeve, we all know (even Keegan) that contracts mean very little in this day and age, apart from the fact that Newcastle would at least receive a hefty ransom for a player who has been in and out of the team throughout the season. There certainly appears to be little reason to keep squad players at the club against their will although United will have to work out how to make themselves more appealing to potentially new exciting players in the future.
