Flavour of the week Birmingham City’s Argentine striker Mauro Zarate has claimed that he was also the subject of a number of bids from Premier League outfits other than the St Andrews strugglers. The 21 year old sharp shooter is claiming that he was targeted by Spurs and Newcastle but decided to opt for a move to the midlands!
Zarate said: “Birmingham were the first club to come in for me and the ones who pushed the hardest to get me out of there. Once I knew Birmingham wanted to sign me, I did my best to convince the Al-Sadd owners. There were other clubs interested just before I signed here. From England, there were Tottenham and Newcastle, but I am very happy with my choice.” (various)
Al Sadd’s reported asking price of around £15million may prevent City from signing Zarate on a permanent basis (sportinglife.com)
Not sure I believe it was as clear cut as the Buenos Aires born star would have us think it is. I really can not see how a player would decide a move to the Premier League strugglers over a move to either of the other ‘giants’. Also I think there is a danger that people might be going a little overboard with the success of Zarate after all he has managed to score goals in two Premier League games, but the way he has hit the headlines you would have thought he was the next Bati-gol. I would happily lay a wager that if he signs up permanently with any Premier League club for next season he will not score more than half a dozen goals all season! Any takers?
