Bruce reveals Manchester United manager is a smooth (telephone) operator

April 15, 2008

It’s clear that when Wigan are playing one of Manchester United’s title rivals, Steve Bruce can expect the phone to start ringing and hear a Glaswegian voice on the other end of the line. I wonder what Sir Alex Ferguson has been saying to the Latics manager which has meant Arsenal and Chelsea have dropped points against Athletic in the past few weeks?

The former Red Devils captain reveals through the United website that his former gaffer only calls when it suits him, not what we’d call a real friend here at COS.

“Sir Alex phoned me twice before the game and twice before Arsenal. He hasn’t phoned me any other time during the season. Four times!” said former United defender Bruce. “I have had a few calls from friends in Manchester but I am more pleased for us getting a point. The United players will be pleased but they know it’s not over yet.”

It may not be mathematically over but someone at the Premier League is currently tying red and white ribbons on the handle of the trophy again, that’s for sure. What do you think Fergie says to Bruce on these occasions? Does he provide him with a few tips on how to nullify United’s title rivals. Perhaps he sings a little serenade down the phone “Brucie, do you remember me?” or “I wonder why, Steve’s the greatest gaffer”.

I have believed the conspiracy theory.Eduardo’s injury was caused by one of the red faced former protege’s player. Now in Wigan.
How is it Manure’s players are not deliberately targetted?how can Rooney/ Ronaldo escape injury?
Do an analysis and my theory could have some truth.

I think the words “nizam” and “dickhead” could have some truth. Analyse that!!

Nizam, do you think Eduardo was specifically targeted for that tackle its not as if he is the main threat in the Arsenal team is it? Are you just another bitter gooner?
    Cheer up chap.

On the other hand, I can see what you are getting at. Bruce, Roy Keane (Sunderland kicked lumps out of Chelsea), Steve Coppell (remember Hunt’s assault on Cech)…. you may be on to something

Parky, are you forgetting some of the mindless GBH that the gooners themselves have committed over the years??

thecat - I didnt put that last post on, some gooner was trying to be original. I don’t think they like being wrong somehow!

I don’t think the gooners have been over-physical to the same extent as, say, Chelsea, Reading, Derby, Bolton. McLeish is also a big favour-granter.

But are those teams any more “over-physical” with Arsenal than any other team .I think not. The unfortunate incident at Birmingham has just given Wenger and his followers an excuse when really, the crux of the problem is that his team has been found to wilt under pressure - Gallas being one of the main culprits.

unfortunate incident-S at Birmingham thecat - not only was Eduardo finished for the season but 2 dodgy decisions gave 2 goals. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Arsenal fan, but it was kind of rough justice - and then they got the wrong side of the refereeing decisions for the CL semis. Having said that, who gives a toss about the Arse?

Really all this boils down to is the poor standard of refereeing in the Premiership. There is a toal lack of consistency between refs and even by the same ref within a match. I am sure any fan around the country can give examples to illustrate this. One impact of this is the suggestion that certain teams and managers are favoured. That is why fans from elsewhere are sceptical about the treatment accorded Man Utd and SAF

David- So you telling me the blatant penalty we deserved against Portsmouth in the F.A.Cup was good refereeing?! Are you suggesting that we had all the decisions go our way? Ask Liverpool fans how they got past Inter and Arsenal? Not through football but by dodgy ref decisions. It happens to everyone!

i think all teams have had their fair share of bad refereeing. seems like the little mics they have in their ears arent really helping alot huh? but seriously i don’t think there’s another way to solve this issue unless we have 2 refs on the pitch? tt is so impossible.

Got something to say?
