Will Chelsea really blank Sky before and after Everton match?
by stresster on April 16th, 2008It’s all threatening to get out of hand at Goodison Park on Thursday, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Chelsea manager Avram Grant and his team are apparently under instructions not to speak to Sky reporters before or after the match against Everton.
It’s clear that the club are far from happy at having to play this match just 72 hours after their 1-1 draw with Wigan on Monday night, stating that it puts them at a clear disadvantage against title rivals Manchester United.
The club have used the £300,000 TV “facility fee” to supply free tickets and transportation to their 2,900 fans inside Goodison. Chelsea fan Dave Johnstone, editor of cfcuk fanzine, said: “Sky don’t care about the dyed-in-the-wool fans.”
That much is certainly true, why would they care too much considering they have millions of paying customers sitting in armchairs up and down the country watching the game instead? However, is it a case that Chelsea will be biting the hand that feeds them, considering the amount of money the corporation invest into the game?

Hopefully yes. Changing the match date after 2000 people have already bought their away tickets is criminal. Sod Sky’s money - the game would be better off without so much. Isn’t that what people always say? Let other teams, who need £300k have their matches televised. Chelsea are already loaded enough.

I am an Everton fan and where the short 2 day break for Chelsea will more than likely Benefit Everton, I am appalled by Sky in general.
As well as the above points made, Everton have 4 games left with not one being on a Saturday…Saturday IS football day, not Thursday, not Sunday.
And although it seems than Man U do have the title more or less tied up (sorry chelsea fans) I would be livid if I was a chelsea fan at the short break.
I do wish teams could live without the SKY money, but all clubs need it now as it is heavily relied on. Even Chelsea need it, yea the chairman is a billionaire, what Billionnaire’s do you know who would be happy to record a business loss every year, which would be the case without the Sky money.
But the main point is the fans, it is not fair to mess them about and free tickets or refunds are not the point. You can put all the money into football you want, but without fans the game is nothing…I just wish SKY would appreciate that.

SKY is the worst thing that ever happened to the game. Discuss.

Bill i agree.
I will be there on thursday night, but i would have been there on sat, sun or monday - thats the problem, we go regardless.
The club benefit from money, hell, we all benefit from sky money, but the biggest problem is to the match going fan. They used to have a voice. They were the catalyst to success. The more bums on seats, the more money. Thats not the case anymore.
Now chairmen dont care for the bums on seats as much as the coffers swelling to Rupert Murdoch’s tune.
I am guilty as anyone, I am a merseyside blue, therefore i go to the game. But i also subscribe to this satallite service that has ruined the beautiful game.

I will not pay money to that bastard and his evil manu-friendly empire - but I do go to the pub to watch games - and the pub pays for SKY so in the end, SKY get their money. But, as you said, it used to be down to the punters coming (and advertising revenue) - but there wasn’t one company deciding which games would be shown, which incidents were or were not worthy of replays, which so-called expert’s opinions we would be subjected to, etc etc - not only that but they can exert their influence on their SKY Sports News channel (how many times recently have I read that players such as Van der Sar, Ferdinand were definitely out of the forthcoming match - only to see them in the first team starting line-up?!!!).
It’s not right and it’s not an even playing field, and it should not have been allowed to happen by our pathetic swayed-by-money FA.

The fact that it puts them at a disadvantage is complete bollocks. Why aren’t Liverpool complaining that it puts them at a \disadvantage\ for Chelsea to get an extra 48 hours rest before an important European cup tie. Were Chelski complaining last season when they played Spurs at home at 12:45 on the Saturday after Spurs had played a UEFA cup game away on the Thursday night??

WHAT ALL YOU MOANERS ABOUT SKY FORGET IS WITHOUT SKY THE PRMIER
LEAGUE WOULDN`T BE WHAT IT IS TODAY WE WOULDN`T HAVE THE FOREIGN PLAYERS THAT ARE HERE BECAUSE OF THE MONEY BEING PAID TO THEM,WE WOULDN`T SEE SO MANY NEW STADIUMS GOING UP.AT THE END OF THE DAY RIGHT OR WRONG FOOTBALL WOULD STILL BE IN THE DARK AGES WITHOUT SKY.

what about last year when tottenham had to play at chelsea on the saturday lunchtime after having played in seville thursday night ? all because chelsea wouldn’t move the match … what goes around comes around ! monday to thursday is no different than wednesday to saturday so whats the problem ? typical attitude of a club that wants everyone to bend over to help them. just get on with it.

Sky are asserting themselves more and more on the Premier League and using their huge investments as justification. Quite frankly they are killing the game in it’s traditional sense, I wonder what the fans in the 70’s and 80’s, out there in the terraces, would make of the new culture of armchair supporters. That passion is now gone because back then you felt like you were so lucky to be watching your team first hand, as nobody outside the ground had access to live coverage. But now you can watch a game from half way round the world. The magic is disapearing and unless this stops the game will be changed permanantly for the worse.
