It’s one thing when a player states that his future at a club is uncertain and that he might have to be ‘selfish’ when it comes to the rest of his career. However, when his manager also comments that he’s uncertain of retaining said player, it appears that the writing is practically on the wall.
Gareth Barry has had a sterling season for Aston Villa, who are now firmly back in the hunt for a UEFA Cup place. However, the Daily Mirror reports that this may not prevent the midfielder from the lure of a ‘Big Four’ club, with Liverpool and Chelsea both reported to be in the hunt for the England international.
O’Neill said: “We will do our utmost to try to keep Gareth – whether we can I don’t know.”
At the end of the day, money talks. As does the opportunity to play in the Champions League, which seems to be a bigger draw than playing in a Euro Championships or a World Cup, especially when your country aren’t featuring this summer. Is Barry going to be adorning another Premier League shirt before the season is out?
