Gareth Barry is all set to leave Aston Villa apparently and Martin O’Neill himself seems to have reconciled himself to this fact and it looks like the sting of losing such an influential player may be eased by Liverpool giving the midlands side first refusal on a number of players they were already keen on.
Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has accepted he’s likely to lose Gareth Barry in the summer.
O’Neill said: “We will do our utmost to try to keep Gareth – whether we can I don’t know.” (The Mirror)
Villa are reportedly very keen on striker Peter Crouch and goalkeeper Scott Carson as well as John Arne Riise (various) and Benitez is ready to give Villa first refusal on these targets.
So it appears that whether this deal involves an actual straight swap or simply that Rafa agrees to sell his squad talents to O’Neill, either way both sides kind of get what they want. Are Aston Villa fans happy about possibly gaining three internationals even if it does mean losing their skipper? And do Liverpool fans see Gareth Barry as a potential Kop idol?
