Spurs plan £10m raid for wonder winger!
by Mr Comfort on April 27th, 2008Tottenham’s season is beginning to stutter to a conclusion, one win in eight, and Juande Ramos already planning a big shake up in the summer apparently, and here is the latest target on his shopping list!
£10m valued Celtic winger Aiden McGeady is on the shopping list of Tottenham boss Juande Ramos.
McGeady is one of Ramos’ many summer transfer targets. (The Mirror)
The 22 year old Glaswegian is a top class player who appears to be angling for a move to the Premier League but the Bhoys will not be keen to sell their hottest prospect but will they be able to prevent the Scottish international from leaving? Do Celtic fans think they will keep the PFA player of the year and do Spurs fans like the idea of such a signing?

David - April 27th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
He’s already stated he’s staying at Celtic… so where does this “angling for a move to the Premiership” story come from?
Usual English media arrogance… Plays in Scotland, so must be creaming himself to play in England.
England till I die!!! - April 27th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I would be creaming myself too. SPL is sh!te, even the Ryman league is better standard. Hope Rangers and Cetic never get their wish to play in the Premier League. Bad enough having a taffy team in our cup final let alone sweaties in our league!
'Taffy' Spurs supporter - April 27th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
There is a ‘Taffy’ team in your Cup final but they earned that right and other teams obviously didn’t! As for the Scotish teams coming to play in the EPL, they should be put into the Championship to start with then earn promotion! McGeady is supposedly the man so lets get him. No disrespect but playing Inverness, Motherwell and other Scottish outposts each week can’t be that much fun apart from winning each time. Playing the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and the Arssssssssssssssenal must be more attractive. It is not English media arrogance, just true….COYS and good luck to Cardiff ‘Taffy’ City in the final!!!!!!!
David - April 27th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Thanks etid for backing my argument against moving to England… A bigoted and mindless view from the masters of the universe… probably posting from a council estate somewhere in Hull but believes the royals do a good job and Jim Davidson is still funny, meanwhile, struggling to buy that new Sovereign ring that your 10yr old has been screaming for… Nice!!!
the scout - April 27th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
were would this team you speak of named spurs play at
'Taffy' Spurs supporter - April 27th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
the scout - what are you on about??????
girojunky - April 27th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Just to point out Mcgeady is an Irish internationalist..
'Taffy' Spurs supporter - April 27th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
girojunky - what has his nationality got to do with the price of bread? McGeeady is apparently the dogs b*****ks, so if possible, Spurs should go for him if it improves the quality of the team. From what I have heard he will. He could be from the planet Zogg for all I care, if he’s good then lets have him!
mike - April 27th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
I think this would be a great signing. The right money would surely make Celtic consider selling so they can strengthen the squad in the summer. Its the Alan Hutton situation all over again and we should act fast before anybody else comes in for him. £12m would do the trick. Mcgeady and Lennon on the wings with Bale and Hutton getting froward from the back. Luca Modric in the centre of midfield linking up with Berbatov and Keane. A defensive midfielder would complete the midfield for sure and Tiago would be perfect. I’m looking forward to the transer signings this summer.
tim odriscoll - April 27th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
aiden plays for the republic of ireland so please get your facts right.
gaz - April 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
When did McGeady play for Scotland?? LOL
Jimmy B - April 27th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Terrible article, loads of factual mistakes. Other than that he looks a top player so lets see if we can coax him down here like we did with Hutton.
Fredo - April 28th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Difference is, Hutton’s previous club were falling over themselves in a bid ro get rid of him, foaming at the mouth just thinking about the cash on offer.
Celtic on the other hand are not in such a desperate position, if you want McGeady, and believe Hutton is worth what you paid - you can start at £15m for the Aiden.
Mark D - April 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am
This was clearly written by someone with their finger on the pulse of Scottish football.
The 22 year old Glaswegian is a top class player who appears to be angling for a move to the Premier League with statements such as ‘I want to stay at Celtic for a few more years’, ‘I’m not interested in moving to England’ and ‘I’d like to play in Spain someday’. There are rumours that the Not-English-So-What-Does-Accuracy-Matter international would consider permanent mid-table mediocrity merchants Spurs a step down and that for £10 million the Celtic be might be prepared to point and laugh at Ramos till he fucked off.
Floridabhoy - April 28th, 2008 at 2:32 am
Now let’s see…….play in silly SPL against Aberdeen, Rangers, Hearts and the like, throw in a few Champions League games against, say Barcelona, AC Milan, Man. Utd and Liverpool…….or move to Spurs and play against Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool and the like. Not in Europe but at least get to play powerhouses like Wigan, Portsmouth, Bolton and Accrington Stanley(Cup game)………nah, stick with the silly SPL Aiden. Don’t let the money fool you, just ask Shaun Maloney !.
JD - April 28th, 2008 at 6:32 am
I WOULD SPEND MY ALLEGED £10,000,000 ELSE WHERE IE LIKE GILES BARNES AND I DON`T THINK IT WOULD TAKE 10 MIL EITHER .

well if a scott picked the republic over scotland would it be that hard fof him to leave the spl for the best league in the world
Mike - April 28th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Why would anyone want to play in the english league when its full of bloody english assholes, oh wait a minute, its not actually got any..
Norton67 - April 28th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Great league the EPL., the english fans must be so proud. Shame that they can’t produce any decent managers to run their teams, or enough decent players to get them into a major finals tournament. Thank God for Rupert Murdoch or where would they be ????

we’ve finished 5th the last two seasons. Get your facts right!
Jermain Defoe He's Yiddo! - April 28th, 2008 at 9:42 am
To be fair the conference north is a better league than the SPL it is a two horse race every year. All the teams are out in the sticks! At least with The Premier League you get to see a good game even if it is at the bottom of the league mid table or top of the league no matter what game is played in ENGLAND it is normally good! I hate Celtic! Rate McGeady Come on you GERS!
ramos - April 28th, 2008 at 9:51 am
hes not coming south hes a celtic nut, plus he is garunteed cl footie
Alabama - April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Taffy Spurs - Spurs? Don’t make me laugh. Delusions of grandeur like Newcastle, another medium sized club that thinks it’s one of the big guns. If McGeady goes, don’t cod yourself that it’ll be to Spurs, they’re not even the biggest club in North London.
“McGeady is supposedly the man so lets get him”. So, you’ve never even seen him play and are willing to support your club paying £10m for him? See the arrogance of clubs and supporters in England - makes me sick.
Dinny - April 28th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Robbie Keane will be Celtic bound in the summer perhaps you Spurs fans should star worrying about that one.
Werd - April 28th, 2008 at 11:17 am
£10 mill isnt enuff is you consider the rate he is coming along last few seasons. Spurs might get beaten to get him by sum bigger team. well… u’l need more than £10 mill anway lads.
Craig Grant - April 28th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Dinny, your lot say that every single season. Keane has no interest in playing in Scotland while he’s in the prime of his career, just like no other tip player in their prime would want to. McGeady looks to be promising but he might not want to come south yet (although he will at some point). Its very difficult to know just how good players playing in Scotland are because the league is so poor. We appear to have got lucky with Hutton but then look at some of thr dross O’Neil took with him from Celtic to Villa. Rubbish !! One final point, McGeady must be really pissed off at being part of a two horse race and being beaten in to second in every competetion both those horses entered….but then he does get to work with a supremely talented manager………
Mark D - April 28th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
@Dicky Bran
My apologies, substitute ‘mid-table mediocrity merchants’ for ‘perennial non-achievers and occasional upper-mid-table UEFA Cup botherers’
EDSITIN - April 28th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Theres no doubt the EPL is a step-up in class from the SPL.
Any professional wants to play at the highest level they can !!
Ask
Alan Hutton
Kenny Dalglish
Dave MacKay
et al.
the cat - April 28th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
MIKE, I take it your talking about assholes cause your right no assholes in the EPL all but 1 seem to play at celtic up the GERS
WingaCeltic - April 28th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
10 Million, pah! Start at 15 million and we might get interested. And why would the most promising player Celtic has produced since Dalglish & Jimmy Johnstone want to sign for a mid-sized, mediocre outfit like Spurs?
When Aiden moves on it will be to Real Madrid, Milan or Barca. Not a wannabee club like Spurs, the third biggest team in London.
Technip88 - April 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Spurs paid 16 million for Darren Bent - a donkey. If they think they can get Aiden for 10 million then they are deluded.
Technip88 - April 28th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Craig Granton
>>>>Its very difficult to know just how good players playing in Scotland are because the league is so poor. <<<
Pop over to you tube and search Mc Geady’s performances in the champions league against much tougher opposition than your average EPL mid-table plodders - like Spurs.
Watch Aiden as a 17 year old being doubled up on by the AC defence everytime he gets on the ball.
Aiden will be a great. But it wont be with a mickey mouse outfit like Spurs.
Elio - April 28th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
It is true that us Spurs fans are a bit deluded sometimes. But to tell you the truth, even though mid table this year, for the third season running, albeit not by finishing 5th like the last two times, we have qualified for europe, which is the first time that can be said in far too long. That may not scream “top club”, but it does scream “club on the up” and “club able to dream about living up to their glorious past”. we are not there yet, but we’re doubtless improving.
ok, there are many first teamers who are found wanting, like jenas, zokora, robinson, malbranque, etc. But Berbatov and Keane are top class, Lennon (though he’s been poor this season) is a phenomenal young talent, easily equal too, probably better than, McGeady, Modric has just signed and he’s europes most sought after young playmaker along with Diego, and when all are fit I can’t really think of anything I’d want to change about the unit that will be Hutton, Woodgate, King and Bale. Two world class centre backs, two potentially world class full backs. A goalie, a top defensive midfielder and a quality left winger (assuming we keep hold of Berbatov) makes us a very strong proposition indeed.
Now lets look at Celtic. Historically a massive club, a chamions league winning club, who in the past have produced some wonderful talents. But realistically, can either celtic or rangers, regardless of champions league football, hope to keep any of their best players in a league where the next best teams are hearts and hibs and those would most likely be relegated in the Prem. And yes, Rangers do get to play Barcelona, but they also got taught and absolute lesson, even in the draw, and that will never change. By joining any of the potentially good premiership clubs (Spurs, Villa, Everton, Newcastle) a Scotsman will always be making a step up from even Celtic or Rangers.
And once again, I acknowledge our rubbish season, I admit that our chances of keeping our star striker are slim, but to telly ou the truth, I got to go to Wembley and see us play potential league and european double winners Chelsea off the park and deservedly win a trophy, even if it is a lesser trophy. I got to watch us take on an Arenal side that included Fabregas, Eduardo, Van Persie, Adebayor, Gallas and Gilberto and trounce them 5-1. Those memories will stay with me fot a long time to come! But then again, I guess you glaswegians get to remember your lovely trip to the middle of nowhere to watch the might inverness and Motherwell!
Anonymous - April 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
SURE HES WITH A MICKEY MOUSE OUTFIT NOW AND YOUS COULD DO WITH THE MONEY AND GIVES THE LAD A CHANCE TO MAKE SOME REAL CASH
Celtic a 'massive' club! - April 28th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
No offence to you hoops but SPL is p’s poor! Rangers look like winning everything in scotland and look at their team! Daily, Weir, Darchville! These guys wouldn’t get a game for Derby and they are the best you have to offer.
Not seen much of Aiden but from what I hear he’s decent. If you were him would you really want to play against dross every week? He may be a fan of the club but he’s nothing left to prove up there. As for playing in the CL, look at the last 4 clubs - 3 play in England! Not sure any of the big 4 would take a gamble on a lad playing monkey tennis week in week out . As such we’ve got as good a shout as any to bag him.
As for spurs being a nothing club, how many European trophies have you lot won? How many trophies you won this year, in fact which english clubs have won anything this year?
Oh and by the way two things, firstly 11 richest club in the world and the only one up there who have never played CL. Secondly Keane would be able to give him the low down and tap him up for the mighty yidos!
ps He’s probably fed up with being left out, now he’s a man none of the club staff will touch him!
pps Jock knew!
zulkifly hairi osman - April 28th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
I’ve said many times in my previous comments…spurs do not need a winger cos we already have Lennon and Malbranque plus Bale,Gilberto and Hutton as flankbacks…what we need is a man of steel that can win balls in midfield…thats the main reason we conceded so many goals…don’t put the blame entirely on the defence and goalkeeping department…so get that man of steel fast or we will end up worst than this season.
Mark D - April 28th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Spurs are the English equivalent of Dundee or Motherwell, their measure of a successful season is if they play well enough to rank quite highly among the teams that weren’t good enough to win the league. You’ve got to feel sorry for their fans, the simple windowlickers of the EPL. I’d have more of an cutting go at them but really who can be bothered reading up on Spurs history just to check up - a long list of Won nothing, won nothing won nothing.
Elio @ mark D - April 28th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
so first team since british football became serious and proffessional to win the league and cup double, back when squads were much smaller; 3 European trophies back when only one club per league made the european cup so the other two competitions were still very illustrious; the third highest winners of the FA cup still despite not having done it since 1991; only bettered on the trophy count by Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool; the first BRITISH club to win any european trophy; two of englands three top all time scorers (greaves and lineker) with greaves having a far better goals to games ratio than either of the other two and also being top league scorer no fewer than 8 years in a row; players of the class verve and skill of Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza, Ginola, Gilzean and many others….. does this really make us a small club like Dundee or Motherwell who have won nothing? I may deride the quality of Scottish football but at least I’m not ignorant or fool enough to deride the acheivments of its top clubs!
stevie - April 28th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I like spurs but i dont think McGeady will leave Celtic for another couple of seasons - he is at the best place for his development with the pressure of having to win every game and test himself against the cream of European football.
No doubt the English premiership is a better league , given the money, the players etc… however, Celtic and Rangers are competing and beatng some of the best teams in Europe with good management and a lot less to spend - makes you wonder what we would do if we played in the EPL.
i’d say top 5 within 2 years and becoming bigger than Man U after 6 years - we have the pulling power!
David - April 28th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Othello - April 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Wow, most Scots - judging by the tirade of ignorant, ill thought-out posts on here - are seriously lacking in any football knowledge or sense. To slam our fans for delusions is one thing, but to compare us to Dundee and Motherwell and to class us as a perennial mid-table side based on this one season is at the least ignorant or at the very most, utterly stupid, which seems to pretty much sum up most fans north of the border.
I was, and still am, an admirer of Celtic and was a happy “fan” after the Old Firm derby. But I really do have to question the mental power and capacity of some of the Celtic fans who post on here with all the grace and grandeur of Sir Alex Ferguson after a defeat.
Dunno whether it is more due to the fact that most Celtic fans are really that pathetic or whether the proverbial chip that most Scots have on their shoulder is really that big that it’s stifling much needed blood to their collective brains….
Mark D - April 28th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Ahem, Spurs record in the Premiership : 8, 15, 7, 8, 10, 14, 11, 10, 12, 9, 10, 14, 9, 5, 5 for a grand average of 9th place. Add in this seasons result and you’ve probably managed to drag that down to 10th and I’m afraid you don’t get more perennially mid-table than than.
I’ll pass over the irony in pointing to the posts as being ignorant and ill-thought out when you look at the embarrassingly piss-poorly written articles like the above.
Aiden McGeady will not take a step down to Spurs and he won’t be sold for anything as laughable as £10 million.
David - April 28th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Wow Othello… wow! Thats the problem, us Scots do know about football… We may not have the best league in the world, but at least we don’t kid ourselves that it is. Using the Wow word though… I mean wow, that’s awsome.
Certainly not a Celtic Fan, and by the way when was the last time an English manager won the Premiership since you guys know so much about football.
Taffy Spurs supporter - April 28th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Stevie - You may be competing and beating (sometimes) some of the best teams in Europe but doing it week in week out throughout a whole season in a much stronger league is a lot tougher! Top 5 in two years and bigger than Man U after 5 is a bit of a big call fella!!!!!
As for Alabama - firstly what does ‘don’t cod yourself’ mean? Just wondering thats all. Of course I support my club paying £10m for a player that I have never seen play before. How many players have Celtic bought over the years, and you have seen every one of them play beforehand….didn’t think so, and you supported them as you hope/trusted the men in the know to make a right decision. Obviously it doesn’t always work like that. It is not arrogance, just that the EPL is a much stronger league, playing the likes of Gretna, Inverness, Hearts, Motherwell, Aberdeen etc etc week in week out, rather than playing teams in the EPL must be more appealing. Even the so called weaker teams like Sunderland, Wigan Fulham can play a bit. I actually like Celtic, nothing against them at all but a lot of you like using the words ignorant and arrogant aimed towards the likes of of Spurs. But if anyone reaks of those words then the Celtic supporters posting on this site are the ones.
I do not for one moment pretend that Spurs is a big club, years and years of mid table madness proves we are not. Under Jol we made big strides and two 5th place finishes proved we were moving in the right direction. Two seasons of a decent run in the UEFA Cup again proving we are moving in the right direction. This season has been a step backwards, new manager in Ramos, back in Europe next season. Already bought one of the most sought after players in Modric, with more to come as well as some dead wood moved on and I am already looking forward to next season. What have you got to look forward to Celtic, a two horse race in the SPL, a few shock results in the Champ league maybe and a cup final or two, against the mediocrity of Scotish football
Othello - April 28th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
So, by your reckoning Mark D, we should not be entitled to have higher aspirations based on our record four or more years ago? Recent records count for nothing?
I guess you would be happy with thoughts that Celtic are also-rans based on the record they achieved while Rangers were in the middle of their seven consecutive titles all those years ago?
Having never actually watched Spurs play, I guess all you would have to go on is records gleamed from Wikipedia or wherever you got those from. I guess McGeady may be guaranteed Champions League football every season with Celtic, but what is the point of always being there if you only progress in the competition very sparingly? I supposed that can be classed as “better than nothing”….
And very wise words, David. One thing I didn’t know most Scottish fans like yourself had, and that is the use of sarcasm. Very classy. And yes, not many Englishmen have managed an English side to the title in recent years, and so? Given that almost all the clubs in the SPL are managed by Scotsmen, it seems highly probable that a Scotsman will win the title, no matter how talented (or lack there of) they may be. Law of averages and all that.
David - April 28th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Wow!!!
David - April 28th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
The one reason English managers are so poor??? they tend to buy English players, I think that explains it, simply and to the point. The top clubs players are foreign, your player of the year foreign… need I go on Othello… Have you noticed? No Sarcasm!!!
Othello - April 28th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Well, glad we cleared that up…!
Othello - April 28th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
English players are only as good as the team that train them.
Alabama - April 29th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Well Taffy, your comments seemed to have a feel of ‘yeah, we’ll take him or whatever’. I never said anything about watching every Celtic signing play before siging them but I’d make an effort if my club were going to pay a lot of money for them (not that they can afford to!). If you could have been bothered, you could probably tune in and see some of the performances he’s put in this season.
I’ve nothing against Spurs and hope you do well, I just find it a little tiresome when mid-table teams in England are promising the sun moon and stars to players. Its not a great league, hyped up by media and pundits who can’t even speak English and are affraid . Aiden can play in front of nearly 60k every week and the CL too for the team he supported as a kid.
AidenMcGeady - May 14th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
aiden mcgeady would consider tottenham a step down. they are incosistant, no chance of playing in the champions league and no chance of winning a trophy. why would he move there? he is an irish internationalist. he doesnt want to move to the premiership and he’s out of tottenhams league. if u want him try starting your bid at 15 million
man u-sam - May 14th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
i think if he moved then it wud not be to spurs. it wud be to a team playing on the champs league. playing in the SPL might be one of the easiest routes into the champs league but wudn’t he rather have that than not entering the champs league at all? and not entering the champs league is exactly wats gonna happen if he joins spurs.
as 4 us at man u, i don’t think we need mcgeady. chelsea and liverpool will probably bench him if he goes there. as for arsenal he might play since arsenal might lose their midfielders. if arsenal manage 2 hold on 2 their midfielders then i think the best advice i wud give him is stay in the SPL at least 4 this season. but the decision is up 2 him.
Anonymous - May 27th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
i think use would be getting robbed paying that for him he is useless if he doesn,t get the ball he goes in a huff and starts getting booked he only good against the we clubs he never ever once got the better of alan hutton so he would not be worth £10.
