Liverpool after £30m midfield pair: One GREAT buy, One BAD buy!
by Mr Comfort on April 29th, 2008It does seem from comments from Rafa and the incessant speculation in the press that Benitez is keen to bring in British talent to Anfield. Some say this is mainly due to the potential rule changes that could stipulate the need for a certain amount of homegrown players who knows, either way it
There is also increasing optimism at Anfield that the chance of playing Champions League football next season will be the key to luring Gareth Barry to Anfield (The Mirror)
The burgeoning rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool could spill over into the transfer market this summer with the London club preparing to move for David Bentley (The Times)
In case you’re wondering, I consider Gareth Barry to be potentially a great buy and Bentley to be a potentially very bad one. Both players values seem to fluctuate but are around £15m each and to be honest I think forking out that much for the Blackburn man would be an error of judgment I wouldn’t think Rafa would make. However talk of Barry’s potential move to Anfield seems more realistic. I really can’t see the England midfielder, who is having his best season yet, moving to Chelsea where many a English midfielder has failed (Sidwell and Parker being two obvious examples). Who do Liverpool fans feel would be the better investment?

Yawn this is well past the boring stage, will you give us all a break
ste - April 29th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
i think they would both add little to the team. i would be extremely disappointed if we signed either, especially for 15 million! they arent worth that when you can get someone like mancini for less, or david silva for a similar amount. these kinds of players have flair
George - April 29th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
ste you stole my thunder your dead rite! Ps: don’t know about mancini tho!
Si Lunt - April 29th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
David Bentley was in liverpool a few weeks ago drunk shouting his mouth off saying he was signing for the reds…whether or not it materialises is another matter.
Personally i think he’d be a good signing, but Pennant is doing a great job down that flank lately….depends how much patience Rafa has.

barry would be a big waste of money, he is not good enough to play in the first XI
and is half the player that alonso is.
I’m assuming alonso would be the one to lose out as maschearano gerrard and lucas clearly aren’t leaving.
Barry is hyped because he is english. He can’t pass to his right. watch villa games carefully. He is sound defensively but I don’t see how he adds to what we have.
MaxPower - April 30th, 2008 at 2:36 am
I’m surprised nobody considered that bentley at the age of 23 is most likely player to do well. I think both of these players are overpriced.
Being an england international is no measure of quality. If anything, an england international should cost less than the spanish equivalent
Ie: Rooney cost 30 million pounds back then, compared to the spanish equivalent who cost 23. (torres) We all know that transfer fees is not an exact science but why would rafa suddenly pretend he wants to overpay for english talent?
If we are to sign barry, he should cost no more than 10. Same goes for bentley, considering mancini can be acquired for the same amount. Then there’s quaresma who COULD be a decent signing.
Big Jon - April 30th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Bentley is a player continually improving, and a good player, but not £15m worth, 9m perhaps. It would be nice to have a few more englishmen in the side. If you consider he’d score perhaps a dozen goals a season, and put crosses in and alike then he’d benefit our side, and be considerably better than Pennant. But if we’re playing Gerrard off Torres then we play a narrower game than we do when say Crouch is in the side. So do we really need “wingers”.
Sheppy84 - April 30th, 2008 at 9:25 am
i agree… im getting really bored of pointless and unfounded speculation.
Paul - April 30th, 2008 at 9:59 am
These would be poor buys in my opinion. Liverpool’s central midfield is sound with Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard (although I honestly cannot see anything in Lucas whatsoever). Imo their priorities should be two new full backs and a right winger. Barry would be good as a left full but not for 15m, max of 8m.
Bentley would be a good improvement if bought again for around 8m. 15m is too much. If Liverpool have any ambitions to win the league, they need to start buying world class players, they need match winners outside Gerrard & Torres. Quaresma should be considered, why not splash out on Ronaldinho?! Cheaper options would be Aimar, McGeady, Maxi Rodriguez and possibly Mancini (but has been poor this season).
All in all, Id prefer to see Liverpool offload players like Riise, Pennant, Kewell, Finnan, Voronin, maybe Kuyt etc, to raise funds and go out and buy 2/3 world class players that will make a difference.
Daniel - April 30th, 2008 at 10:02 am
I think that we should buy neither of them……..i think that Rafa should buy these players:
Quaresma,
Walcott,
Messi,
Maicon,
Pato,
Mifsud (of Coventry)(really fast and we could use him as SUB 4 any injuries)(Go on Youtube and watch some goals of his if u never saw him……)
Bill Vector - April 30th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Messi - YES! (not a chance though); Walcott - YES! (not a chance though); Maicon - YES! (probably no chance) Mifsud - WHY THE HELL NOT (maybe a possibility)
Quaresma and Pato - waste of money, don’t bother, both weedy homs.
ian - April 30th, 2008 at 10:29 am
daniel… Messi, Walcott, and Pato would cost about £100m in total, don’t be so silly. And even if the miralculous did occur, and the yanks sactioned that kind of money, do you think we’d be able to attract all three? We’d be lucky to get one!
I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, full backs are priority number one, closely followed by a winger. Look at the other teams in terms of fullbacks, Evra and Brown/Hargreaves, Clichy and Sagna, and what do we have? Arbeloa and Aurelio or Finnan and Riise. Doesn’t take much to realise the void there.
And why are we banging on about Bentley and Barry? McGeady is the man, 10m is a bargain! Has anyone watched the guy play? He is class. However, I would stake my mortgage on us not even trying to sign him.
Anonymous - April 30th, 2008 at 11:08 am
mcgeady hahahhaha are you serious ian pennant is lightyears ahead of him and im irish he is playing in a piss poor league, he looks second rate when he plays with ireland even kevin kilbane has played a couple of good games for ireland, im irish by the way, barry and bentley do would be no additions to the team we need top quality wingers and full backs and another striker in case torres gets injured early next season, if he does we are bolloxcked.

wondering why u consider barry to be a great signing? were would he play? in midfield instead of who, gerrard alonso or mascherano? hes definitely over rated as a central midfielder and no where near the same class as wot we have there already. if its left wing then there are plenty of better left wingers than barry. the only place were he wud strenghten the team is if he played left full. just wondering if u wud let us know were he wud actually play in the team if he is such a great buy
dsdasd - April 30th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Barry would play at left-back (unless Alonso left), and would be very good in my opinion
Ermal - April 30th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
with this money buy quresma for 20mil.
5mi.Amantino Mancini
5mil.Rafinha
Sell: Riise(5mil.),Crouch(8mil),Carson(9mil.),Voronin(2mil.)=24mil.BUy David Villa..!!
Charlie - April 30th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Barry at left back? Idiot
zekk67 - April 30th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Why spend 10+m on barry alone when you can actually buy the entire first XI of Aston Villa with less than 10m? O’Neill wants more, but there is a limit to the quality of his squad and barry certainly isn’t worth more than a mil given his noobness.
sel - April 30th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
sell hyppia pennant crouch vorronin riise carson amd some of the reserves and get some cash and spend it on some good players like t. henry d.villia bentley and barry and some better players instaed of people who you’ve never heard of na dwho arent that good

Sell kewell,voronin,crouch,kuyt,alonso,riise and pennant=35million

hunterlar - April 30th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! both are very good players and rafa knows what he is doing!!!!!!!!!! Bentley had an excellent performance against manure and garett is way better than alonso and anyway alonso will be sold next season!!!!!!!!!!! quaresma may not adapt to PL and is not that good. Rakitic is a very poor player as well!!!
rafinaha will be an excellent addition!!!!!!!!!! Pennant should not be sold he is excellent!!!!!!!!!
Kuyt, Voronin, kewell, Arbeloa, Riise must be sold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Swede - May 1st, 2008 at 6:32 am
We need two REAL good players for next season, we already have enough “Bench players”.
OUT: Kewell, Arbeloa, Riise, Voronin
IN: Villa, Modric
Should be enough for a PL win 2008/2009.
Some of our youngsters will also be up there for next season…
abdirahman in keyan - May 1st, 2008 at 8:50 am

kurt - May 5th, 2008 at 9:25 am
for people saying we should seel kewell….we cant because hes out of contract, so he will be gone on a free. john arne riise will probably be leaving which is a shame to see him go out the way he has done for all the great things hes done for this club (people seem to forget the goal vs barca no less than a year ago!) voronin came on a free and i believe will leave this summer and should leave this summer. carson should generate some cash although nobody seems adament to pay the 10 mil rafa seems to want. the 2 im not sure about are crouch and alonso. i like both these players and they are key figures for our team.people make me laugh slating alonso this season when he was injured from roughly september to the new year (thats why hes struggled for form) and crouchy well, as much as i like him and his goal record is awesome i think he will be gone.
id like to see babel convert to a striker next season that way our money can go on 2 wingers and a full back (after phillip degan)
for me barry would be a good signing, not amazing. but people are basing this all on names, forgetting that this lad is an england starter. but i agree the price will be steap. and yes rafa would use him at “left back” occasionally. not rocket science.
bentley for me would be a superb buy, has age on his side and can pick a cross unlike our current wingers.
i cant see the fascination in mancini when hes aging, quaresma weve tryed for year and year, and silva, well we could wish. we dont wanna end up with the whol spanish XI though!
i for one felt modric would have been a superb signing, how did spurs pull that 1 off! :O
bass - May 5th, 2008 at 10:29 am
ste = tard
whole point is non uk player limits/ need for uk players bently nope but barry, hed walk int every team in world
Mike - May 5th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Rafa said: “During the summer we will try to improve the squad. We are still not taking our chances, so that is something that we will try to improve.”
Podolski or Huntelaar is who to look for, they already tried to get Podolski on loan in January and Liverpool people have been seen at the Allianz Arena and Amsterdam Arena since then.
Either of these moves will be quiet until after the Euros. Look for Chelsea to go after Huntelaar if their other deals fall through (AND whomever Man U and Arsenal are trying to sign), they’ll do just what they did with Malouda, offer Lyon (Ajax in this instance) the exact same fee right before he signs with Liverpool, then offer the player a few thousand more per week, if he is a money grubbing scum he’ll sign for Chelsea, if not he’ll sign for the Pool.
Kurt - May 6th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
i cant see us buying another striker for millions tbh, i seriously think the money will go on wingers and full backs.kuyt and babel can fill in up front
Anonymous - May 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Mifsud for sure!!
