Newcastle plan £5m swap deal that could solve Keegan’s biggest problem
by Mr Comfort on April 29th, 2008Newcastle are not exactly famed for their defending and in recent years they have leaked goals with alarming regularity. Only Reading and Derby have conceded more than the Magpies this term, hence the latest speculation about a swap deal to help alleviate these problems.
Rangers are preparing a bid for Newcastle United striker Alan Smith in a deal that might see centre-back Carlos Cuellar going in the other direction (The Sun). Gers boss Walter Smith is set to test the water with a £5m bid at the end of the season.
Cuellar has been outstanding for Rangers, where he has played almost 60 games in what has been a lengthy season, helping them to an incredible 30 clean sheets in the process. Walter Smith will not want the Spanish centre-back to leave but if they get Smith in return then that might soften the blow.
How would Gers fans take to Smithy? And do Newcastle need defenders in abundance or will the addition of Cuellar be enough to stem the flow of goals against?

HOW CAN NEWCASTLE AFFORD HIS WAGES
ourman - April 30th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Can all Newcastle fans at least pretend that Alan Smith is really good. If people start to realise that he is as bad as we all know he is then we’ll never get rid of him.
Alan Smith - fabulous player. An absolute snip at £10m

Alan Smith, great player, would fit into the Rangers side and become a fan favorite, prolific goal scorer, yellow card specialist, platinum blonde, i could go on and on, and hey! ex Man. U. player, has to be good Right!
Grab him while he`s available, you wont regret it.
Oh, bye the way, anyone interested in buying a bridge?

We cant keep selling our best players! Smith has immense skill, an accurate and controlled style of tackling, is rarely booked and has often changed the face of the game completely. Rangers would be lucky to have him

They surely need to reinforce their defense.
BROXI - May 11th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
As much as I like Smithy you can stick that idea right up you geordie arses. Yes we have some shit teams in the SPL but there are also some shit teams in the premiership and guess what…..Newcastle are one of them.
If you were daft enough to give us £8m for Boumsong then Cuellar must be worth £30m
P4uly - May 11th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
I really rate Smith as a player, and would love him to come to Rangers, however I have to be honest and say I’d much rather keep Cuellar. He’s been immense for us this year, not only in the SPL but throughout the european campaign.
Give them Broadfoot instead! ha!
