Liverpool after FIVE brits for £65m: Rafa finds two good homegrown talents worth bidding for!
by Dexter on April 30th, 2008Rafa Benitez has been linked with a raft of British talents, from current internationals to up and coming hot prospects.
Gareth Barry (Aston Villa) £15 rated - The Mirror says there is increasing optimism at Anfield that the chance of playing Champions League football next season will be the key to luring Barry to Merseyside from Aston Villa in the summer.
Aaron Ramsey (Cardiff City) £4m rated - Ramsey is lighting up the Bluebirds side and has already been linked with big money moves to Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. (various)
David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers) £20 rated - According to reports in the The Express, Liverpool want to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley.
Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) £12 rated - The Daily Mail reports today that Liverpool will compete with Newcastle for the signing of Aaron Lennon.
Michael Johnson (Manchester City) £14 rated - Liverpool are a step closer to landing Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson.
The Sun says Johnson is considering his future at Eastlands over the way manager Sven Goran Eriksson has been treated.
Of these five I think that realistically Rafa would only really be interested in Michael Johnson, a great prospect, and Gareth Barry, at his peak. The others are either not needed because Liverpool has plenty of talent in their given position or is just not really worth considering as a potential Liverpool player. Who out of these five would Anfield fans really like to see in a Liverpool shirt?

FrFkSk’S…..its about time Liverpool got some top players that some other top clubs really want….we’ve got plenty squad players…….i would like to see big RAF go for Sergio Aguero, Karim Benzema, Hatem Ben Arfa, Dani Alves, Giorgios Chellini, and JUST to add some British players to the team perhaps MIcheal Johnson & Bentley, maybe even Lennon.
xavi010789 - May 1st, 2008 at 2:37 am
ohh yeah Ben Arfa, Menez, Nasri, Richards, Behrami, Manncini, Marcelo Moreno are good player
allahs boot - May 1st, 2008 at 5:12 am
for f…. sake, its time for quality over quantity.Torres is the perfect example for us,and you only have to look at what spending big has done for man u and chelsea. For 65mil id rather have benzema, alves, quaresma, henry than lot.
ian - May 1st, 2008 at 8:28 am
Barry is worth 8m, and I’d sooner keep Alonso.
Ramsay is prob worth a punt for 2-3m
Bentley is worth 8m, and for that price I’d say why not.
You couldn’t pay me to take Lennon.
And Johnson is worth 5m at best.
I think its fair to say the only one of these we’re seriously going to go for is Barry, and we’re gunna get ripped off big time!
If they get Crouch as part of that deal I think its time to just give up
chuck - May 1st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I agree with Ian, actually I rate them a bit lower, but with inflated prices being asked for to-days home grown talent and the PL awash with dosh, whadda ya expect.
A_goon - May 1st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
why buy barry and johnson. liverpool already have gerrard, mascherano, benayoun and alonso in central midfield. i know a team is supposed 2 have depth but six players in one position??? thats ridiculous
Bill Vector - May 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Master tactician?
I agree with Ian, although I think Michael Johnson is a great prospect. We need to sort out finance if we are to keep up with Man U and Chelsea. It’s becoming ever more obvious. Shame but it’s the only way. Hicks may seem like a big Texan twat to most LFC fans, but he pointed out the problem: Parry’s 10 years have been a disaster, he hasn’t exploited the huge potential of the brand, and alongside the useless muppet Moores (who only inherited the club from his dad) his tenure has kept us standing still while the others have forged ahead.
Apart from that, why is Benitez so negative. At 1-1, I was thinking we had a great chance. The Torres goal cancelled out Riise’s hideous mistake (he was v slow for Drogba’s first goal too) - and all Rafa had to do was get Crouch on alongside Torres to give the midfield an outlet, so that when under pressure from a desperate Chelsea, they could then have punted it upfield knowing there would be 2 strikers with a chance of holding the ball and keeping Chelsea’s defence under pressure. The ideal candidate to be replaced (as he so often he has been this season) was Kuyt. Instead, I watched in dismay as the fat idiot chose the ineffective (against all but weak opposition) Pennant - and compounded his error by taking off Bennayoun (who had created the equaliser for Torres when we hadn’t looked likely to score for the whole first half). Fatty brought on Babel later but UNBELIVABLY removed Torres (again keeping his ridiculous faith in Kuyt) by which time we were 3-1 down needing 2 goals - and now a single-pronged attack reduced to wingers and midfielders - not one decent striker left on the pitch. It was a 6ft 6in. error from Benitez - exactly like the error he made in last year’s final when he a) chose Zenden and left out Crouch and b)didn’t bring Crouch on until far too late.
My point is this: If we get funding from Hicks, or DICs, and buy some great players, it won’t make athe slightest difference to our chances if we have a fat fool in charge, continually preferring the likes of Dirk Kuyt, Kewell, Zenden, Riise etc to the good players. That idiot can’t read the game. Master tactician? Master Bator more like
Bill Vector - May 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
PS Well played Chelsea (with the proviso that our manager let you off the hook - see above) - please stop those evil bastards getting a 3rd European Cup win, not that I’ll bother watching - wouldn’t want to waste 2 hours of my life on THAT.
fdsss - May 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm
blue nose enjoy the uefa cup but make sure you dont get knocked out this time so early

How can you say Barry is worth £8mil and Johnson £5mil. They are both worth double than these figures, or close to, as that is how the market is. If Macherano is worth £17mil Barry is worth at least £20mil! Also, why does everyone insist on saying that Pool have cash? They might have like 10-15 mil to spend and the rest has to come from selling, thanks to the wanker fat cat owners….
scouser17 - May 2nd, 2008 at 8:55 am
Barry & Bentley would be great. Aaron Lennon is a great dribbler but can’t kick a ball to save his life! Johnson - great prospect but what the hell do we need him for? We need another quality striker & if we don’t get Bentley a winger. But NOT Lennon!
Alex - May 2nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Johnson would be awesome for us! we have 4 decent cm’s in gerrard, mascherano, alonso and lucas, but we play 3 of them in in starting formation so he would offer us extra cover. Well worth the money-he’s 19.
Bentley would be quality aswell, great ball delivery, ball controll and is good with set-pieces. Well worth the money as benayoun doesn’t always stick wide and pennant is too inconsistent.
Barry is quality but he has peaked. What I mean is that I don’t think he will improve any more so. And seeing as we have 3 quality cm’s, for a player who is at the peak of his career, i don’t think he will be in the starting IX, unless we sell alonso.
Lennon is good but if we were to sign bentley i don’t see why we would need him?
Micah Richards has a 16m buy-out clause in his contract and I honestly believe he would solve our defensive weaknesses. He’s fast, strong, consistent, and would be a great full back and could cover cb if we got injuries.
He would be one of our best ever signings seeing as he was is the yongest engilsh defender to have been capped and he is unhappy with Sven leaving.
Move agger to lb as he has a good left peg and then play carra + skrtel in the middle.
Vaisey - May 2nd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
aaron ramsey well worth it can play winger as well as centre mid, next stevie g
even though i don’t just want to buy players for the future!

Liverpool fans get fucking real. Rafa is a legend. If Riise wasn’t so damn one-footed he would’ve cleared that ball and it would be 3-3 on aggregate and Liverpool would be in a 3rd final in 4 years! The only reason he was on was because the stellar Aurelio got injured. The only reason Torres came off was because of his hamstring. The only reason Hyypia was on to give away a pen was because the massive Skrtel was injured. Get the facts straight before you type lads.
Just to throw this out there- I have a friend who works at the Allianz-Arena as part of the grounds crew, he told me in December that the rumor around the place was that Liverpool was interested in a loan move for Podolski and then it came out in the press in January that Man City and Liverpool had inquired, so when he tells me now that the word is that Liverpool is discussing getting Podolski permanently I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.
He went to a turf seminar during the winter break (I know funny) and some Dutch counter-parts were saying Liverpool had been all over Huntelaar there recently too.
I know, all hearsay but obviously Torres won’t be the last young, quality striker Rafa goes after.
Barry would be cover for Riise and midfield, so he would make more sense than some of these other names.

buy an intellegent player for liverpool!!!!!!!! that while playing on the field..the player can use their brain to get some plan to confuse others team..like Ronaldo,Rooney,Drogba,R.kaka..there hav got an intellegent talented player while they play on the field..so buy an intellegent PLAYER!!!!!! go buy NASRI,ALVES,KAKA,DAVID VILLA,PATO!!! do the right choice~~~~;)
A_goon - May 3rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm
matL, ur reasoning is poor. kaka and pato??? what makes u think they r gonna live milan. kaka won the champs league with milan plus a number of other individual honours. as for pato he looks like a future successs story at the san siro. so do you think it’s still wise 2 suggest these names?
as for alves and villa, maybe but real madrid is likely to get them 1st. out of the five u suggested, nasri is the only realistic target. so PLEASE!!! stop mentioning the other 4 names. u have mentioned them in 4 or 5 articles already!!! it’s just a waste of time. and it just makes people think of u as a real dumbass.
josh - May 3rd, 2008 at 11:35 pm

i hate Rafa when he put players in the field,he choose the wrong players!!!… why dont he keep the players in the same position in every matches!!… use brain in putting the players in the field!!….don’t do mistake oftenly..If the players n manager happy for the winning match, liverpool fans also join happy with them too!!.. think 1st before do!! btw i support Malts opinions…
Goh - May 4th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Yeah! buy Nasri..even C. Ronaldo before,he got famous in his previous team but soon Man utd bought C.Ronaldo n he left his team honorably…so why dnt Rafa just target transfer for Nasri…and he still young though.
