Spurs in £40m mega-swap that could catapult Ramos into the top four!
by Mr Comfort on April 30th, 2008The race for £40m rated Samuel Eto’o is beginning to reach boiling point, especially now the Cameroonian is once again going to complete a season without a winner’s medal of any kind and it appears that his Barcelona side is nearing breaking point as many of his teammates consider their futures at the Catalan club. Now another angle has emerged regarding Spurs interest in the star striker.
Tottenham boss Juande Ramos is ready to use Dimitar Berbatov as bait to land Samuel Eto’o from Barcelona. (London Evening Standard)
Ramos has made Eto’o his No1 target to replace Berbatov up front. Spurs are already resigned to losing the Bulgarian international, with Ramos expecting him to join Barcelona or Real Madrid.
It seems that Berbatov is very near the exit at WHL and many Spurs fans I have spoken to seem resigned to losing him. Would Eto’o represent a very real improvement or do Tottenham fans consider Berbs an all round better player to have at the club?

Berbs is a far better player. And if he goes i’d only want eto if there was money on top coming our way
scorpion - April 30th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Wow! Didn’t we do this topic yesterday. Something new please. Like a swap rumor between us and CFC. They get Robinson we get Petr Cech. About as believable as the one I just read. I won’t take credit for this comment because I read it somewhere else yesterday but Eto’o is a more refined version of DBent and we went there already. NO NO ETO’O. Villa for me if Berba goes.
scorpion - April 30th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
In case creativity has been numbed by too many Heinekins here’s a topic for you. If Ramos is making all the final decisions on who stays and who goes, why not fire Comolli and hire a yes man with a strong financial background to handle the nitty gritty contract bs, and have him report to Ramos? Obviously this is the way it is working anyway so why not get rid of an overpaid numbskull and get things onside?
DANNY - April 30th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
IF BERBATOV GOES I WUD LIKE VILLA INSTEAD OF ETO AS HE WILL BE BETTER IN THE ENGLISH LEAGUE. HE IS A SIMILA TYPE OF PLAYER TO FERNANDO TORRES AND LOOK HOW HE HAS TURNED OUT. VILLA FOR ME BUT I THINK BERBATOV IS FAR BETTER THAN BOTH OF THEM IN TERMS OF FORM OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS AND HE HAS MORE SKILL AND HAS THE BEST TOUCH IN WORLD FOOTBALL AND HE IS SMARTER THAN ETO AND VILLA IN TERMS OF A FOOTBALL BRAIN. AND BERBATOV AND KEANE ARE AMAZING TOGETHER AND KEANE MIGHT GO SHIT AGAIN IF HE CANT WORK WITH VILLA OR ETO IF WE GO FOR ONE OF THEM IF BERBATOV LEAVE. SO MY OPINION IS I HOPE RAMOS CAN SIGN SOME GOOD PLAYERS TO SHOW BERBATOV TO STAY AT SPURS FOR ONE MORE SEASON THEN HE CAN GO IF WE DONT GET A MAJOR TROPHY OR CHAMPS LEAGUE. PLEASE STAY BERBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
scorpion - April 30th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I will not argue with most things you have said Danny. Spot on. However, Berba is a sulky sob who brings the rest of the team down with his negative vibe nonsense. I would only want him to stay if he got rid of that mouthy midget that calls himself his agent, and he stopped the bad body language. I actually believe that Ramos wants him gone because of his inconsistent play. A GREAT talent yes but a team player? Perhaps not so much.
fan - April 30th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
more likely berbs going to madrid with robinio coming plus cash to buy Villa
Paul A - April 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Scorpion at last someone who is talking sence, i am a season ticket holder at the lane so i see plenty of Berbs when he can be bothered! to show up, Eto is a natural finisher thats it and probably thats what we need ok Spurs score lots of goals but we miss at least 6 great chances every match. Spurs will always score bagfulls of goals from Midfield and with Modric on board expect that to increase next season. For me lets spend the money on a deal for Eto or villa and a competent partner for JJ along with another competent goal keeper along with Bale back and ledley back we will have a top team for next season. Players out
KABOUL,TAINIO,BOATANG,GARDNER,STALTERI,CHIMBONDA
scorpion - April 30th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Paul A; personally I’d keep Tainio because he can sub at so many positions and do a decent job. I would add Lee, Huddlestone, Lennon, Cerny and Zokora to your list. Time to take out the garbage and get quality rather than quantity into the sqaud.
spur forever - April 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
We have had enough of Berbatovs ego trip without getting landed with another pain in the arse.
Bristol Spurs - April 30th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
If Berbs goes, we’d eant Etoo & Xavi.
meesterlee - April 30th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Berbs for Messi and Xavi! Berbatov should only be sold at the last resort, we do hold his contract afterall. He’s a genius…
Bristol Spurs - April 30th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
I dont want to sell Berbs beacuse he is a class act. But he is not playing like a player that wants to stay. If we can’t keep Berbs, rather than £35m and then chasing shadows in the market, we should consider his departure as an opportunity to strengthen the squad.
Madrid usually pay any price for a player they want. How about swapping Berbs for out of favour players; Saviola, Drenthe and Robinho?
Then we buy Mario Gomes in the transfer market, much better iotion than Etoo & a fortune for Woolwich Wanderer; Bentley
johnnyh - April 30th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
on his last nights performance bring back Rasiak instead
Jamie - April 30th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
i know someone that works at spurs and eto was at white hart lane with his agents the day before yesterday.
yido george - April 30th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
etoo aint worth 40 mill BERBA IS if their gonna be a swap y not ask 4 all the players barcelona gonna loose!!!! . they wanna get rid of ronaldiniho etoo is unhappy as is deco apparently y not ask 4 all 3 barcelona dont care what they get 4 players (if they dont want them) and are willing to pay big money 4 players they want to buy
Morgan. - April 30th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Jamie! your a prick who has read too many stories on the net!!!! Eto was in lManchester for the semi!! spurs od. and Harry Hotspur reported that crap. Believing it is bad enough, repeating it as ‘your mate’ makes you a very sad 15yr old trying to be clever
Rogers the yiddo - April 30th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
haha, the day before a champions league match eto is at white hart lane? come to think of it any day eto being at white hart lane. lol, i just laughed and milk came out of my nose!
As much as id love to say it was true i just cant see it happenning. Im resigned to the fact we are gonna lose berby this season. think most people can tell you that but i just cant think of a player i would want to replace him.
eto i suppose could do a job but there are totally different. i dont know many players in the world with berby’s natural skill and technique. he may be a bit of a sulker but you can blame him, we do have some old crap still in the squad.
there are a few places we need strengthening but We have not got a natural defensive midfielder that we crave so badly. the closest we got to this was carrick and that didnt last long. I think if we manage to get this position sorted it could open up so many oppotunities.
This would also help JJ. We have seen glimpses of what he can do when pushing forward but this is always spolit with him believing he has to rush back and help our crumbling defence out. I dont rate JJ as a world class player but if we managed to get a defensive midfielder maybe he could be come a very good player for us.
All the top clubs seem to have this position covered and i think getting this sorted along with another top defender to rotate with woody and ledley would assist our climb.
Ramos seems and always has prefered counter attacking football down the wings. this could also help this.
im no expert and will never pretend to be (had to get this in before the dodgy comments come flying in)
What do you think?
Maur - April 30th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
As a SPURS fan, I would be happy to see Berbatov go especially if we can get £35 - 40m for him despite his enormous tallent which can be breadth taking but the problem is his inconsistensy and POOR team play. You never can tell what Berbatov you will get in any match!!!
On the other hand, Etoo will be a FANTASTIC replacement as he is one of the best finishers in the world, a fantastic team player with MASSIVE experience at the highest level. Watching RAMOS, I can bet Etoo will fit his bill better than Berbatov.
Seeing how Ramos turned around a “finished” Kanoute(Etoo is better). I see Etoo delivering for Spurs what Berbatov hasn’t done this season.
Etoo, if fully fit and gets the supply that SPURS players have squandered this season, we would have a player who could get about 25 - 30 goals and a contender for the highest goal scorer. Etoo will score more goals than Berbatov in any league!
However, I doubt Etoo will come to Spurs.
Peter Ruse - May 1st, 2008 at 12:26 am
In the Man U match Eto look a lazy B. Bent looked better than him and I am not a Bent fan.
greekos - May 1st, 2008 at 1:56 am
Etoo is a long shot but so was Modric. Honestly who thought that we would actually sign Modric?? Etoo would be welcome at any club in the world and if Ramos can pull it off then good luck if he cant then fine envoke the clause in berba’s contract that keeps him at totteham for 2 more years and use him instead.
Personally I want Berba gone. His negative attitude is more detramental to the team that his skill is positive so I would prefer more established names to come in a take over the mantle. I want Villa to come over Etoo but either would be extremely beneficial to the club!!!!
TheShah - May 1st, 2008 at 3:39 am
I’d welcome E’to with open arms…n Berbs can go..although he will be missed..but with E’to…Spurs will have more penetration in attack..
Plus..I cant stand the sight of those flailing hand gestures again
Taha - May 1st, 2008 at 6:12 am
Eto is too expensive. You dont want to risk paying 40m for someone who may not fit the EPL. Thiery Henry would be value for money.
Anonymous - May 1st, 2008 at 9:16 am
bristol spurs think your on the right track there regarding swapping players, with berbs worth so much only a few clubs could actualy afford him,but the player i would go for is rino gatusso he’s the player spurs have been calling out for for years a hard hitter in the middle that can play football unlike zakora, hopefully with the extra cash from the deal i would like to see a few of these players arrive villa, crouch, drenthe and jonny evans from man u he can play cb or lb all these players are within our reach and enable us to move forward
Ramosrules - May 1st, 2008 at 10:04 am
Poulson(Dm), diego capell(LW/B) & Eto (The best striker does not sulk finishes for fun far better than Berbs when happy !! A defender then needed as cover.
Wayne - May 1st, 2008 at 10:43 am
Beba was fantastic in his first season because his agent put him there and he took the credit.
Then his agent had other ideas after his great 1st season & the Pounds/Euros sprung up in his eyes. I’m so sick of reading comments from his agent & Berbas obviously been affected by it all. Where did all this shoulder shrugging & moaning come from all of a sudden ???
He’s got too big for his boots & should either shut the whole thing up & commit once & for all or just do one because it must be bringing the whole team down, just like Henry did. They didn’t do that bad when the team was relieved of a superstar striker/ superstar moaner.
Stay or go Berba, make your decision & stick to it. And fire that little pip squeek of an agent whilst your at it.
Actually, just go, i’m that fed up with it, here before you, here after you.
Come On You Spurs……………
Park Lane 81 - May 1st, 2008 at 10:55 am
Apart from the odd moment of magic, Berbatov’s been disappointing this season and his attitude stinks…remember performances against Sunderland, Everton etc at the beginning of the season? If he doesn’t want to play for us he can go…..want £30m though.
Can’t believe no one’s mentioned the goalkeeper situation. Ever since world cup, robinson has been a total liability (cerny obviously not the solution). This is a key position that Ramos has to get right. My preference would be Ben Foster, but would be happy with Kirkland, Cudicini or PSV’s Gomes.
Not sure who else is out there (don’t want Green or Kameni), but I’ve supported Spurs since ‘87 and apart from Clemence I’ve never seen a decent ‘keeper at the Lane…could make such a difference.
Bogey - May 1st, 2008 at 10:56 am
all these so called spurs fans talkin about getting rid of Berbatov are a joke, the man has been brilliant for us, and as for complaints about his attitude, he was the one who didnt go party after the cup final like the rest, saying that he would rather concentrate on our next game to improve our league position, now that sounds like commitment! yes his agent has been making a lot of noise but i have never heard him say anything negative about the club, so if ur a real spurs fan get behind him and have some faith.
as for incoming transfers, i think we need someone with good technique and a bit of pace over the first few yards in the centre of midfield who can create space and make a decent pass because at the minute we dont. jj and huddlestone are fine but we need someone in there with a bit more class like anderson or iniesta, doubt they would come but someone in that mould, any suggestions??
Billy Big Balls - May 1st, 2008 at 11:41 am
Eto’o is the main ‘face’ of Puma.
Tottenham are sponsored by the brand - it could be that his agents/advisers want a deal to go through, thus creating a basis for the Puma company in the premeirship. Ensuring an increase in capital. Percentage going to the player?
Also do not forget he is one of the most popular and talented African players - shirt sales?
So we have the Tottenham sponsored by Puma.
Cameroon sponsored by Puma.
Eto’o sponsored by Puma.
The player could then truly be the personification of the brand.
Maybe it is not as crazy as some of you think.
dave - May 1st, 2008 at 12:32 pm
who would eto’o partner? it doesnt make sense at this moment in time unles he was to partner berbs.

you spurs fans are so funny. u r mentioning the possibility of signing players like villa, etoo, benzema, robinho and the list is endless. but did u guys forget that u r not going 2 be playing champs league football next season and that ur going 2 finish on the bottom half of the table???
the players ur mentioning r players who only go to clubs which play in the champs league and finish in decent positions on the league. u can argue that villa and robinho r unhappy at their current clubs but have u forgotten there r other bigger clubs bidding apart 4rm u guys?
i know some of u guys wud argue that u won in the race of signing modric. other clubs didn’t sign modric coz they were smart. modric is a player who became famous after one brilliant display against england. but players like robinho and villa r famous coz they perform brilliantly in many games
so when it comes 2 players like this u’ll definitely lose the race. if i were u guys i wud be thinking about signing these players next year this time. that is if u finish at a position that considers champs league football
JJ - May 1st, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Actually Modric is known for doing a bit more than just playing in one game, otherwise why would other clubs be “racing” for his signing?
Just because you don’t know anything about him, don’t assume that these clubs haven’t done some research on the lad.
Use your loaf.
A_goon - May 1st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
yes they were racing. but they never raced in the same way they wud race 4 someone like villa. i think that shows they wud rather race 4 someone like david villa than modric. no disrespect 2 the lad
JS - May 1st, 2008 at 5:12 pm
People didn’t race for modric at all. Spurs was his only choice. His club turned down the only other offer from newcastle so his only choice was spurs.
I just think it is funny some of the players you are linking yourselves with.
Spurs = most deluded fans in the country. berbs is to good for you.

JJ - May 1st, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Well we’ll see how well he does and who we sign.
You forget that Eduardo had only played Croatian football, yet somehow because he signs for Arsenal that it’s different? Granted it’s not £20mil (even though that payment is spread over several years) but £8.5 mil is pretty substantial.
And you forget that it’s the media that does the linking and we get linked to absolutely everyone on a regular basis. We’re merely commenting on that speculation.
Kelsey657 - May 1st, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Modric signed for spurs as he knows Ramos is top coach also he is a close friend to eduardo of arsenal and Kranjkar of pompey so will prob move near them. I think villa will sign for spurs as they have been monitoring him for last 5 years would of got him sooner but hes never wanted to leave spain. Ramos will persuade him i also hear most their team is available as they are desperate now for cash Jaoquin, silva,Zigic,Albelda i would not mind any of these either seems valencia are club to round ramos is well respected in spain next season all the shit of spurs will be fucked off bring em all in i say maybe 4th spot then and uefa cup . lets bring few spaniards to the lane
JS - May 1st, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Modric signed for spurs because he was forced to by his club. O.k. He might have chose you anyway but he had no choice.

case rested and closed,
do you really think Levy will let you spend 40M or sell by far your best player bearing in mind the amount you will lose on Bent PLUS the fact you aren’t playing champions league football next season…..
one player doesn’t make a team.
And as for the muppet who called us the “joke of the big four” despite going on about going on a spending spree

demajor, you are a tit
I’d rather be the laughing stock of the top four than the laughing stock of the bottom half of the table!!!
course you have touched a nerve with the”laughing stock of the top four” comment because Spurs haven’t looked like making the top four for a long time (oh apart from when we took it off you on the last day of the season, that still brings a smile to my face)
nice to see you are racist as well though, adds real quality to your already stagnant personality, the only positive thing is that you write like a child so most people can’t understand how offensive you are trying to be.

infact the only person looking 4 promotion wud be spurs since they have tried so much to enter the top four but they have failed. they must be hoping that someday arsenal wud get involved in a match fixing scandal and be relegated.

I am angry at LEVY for the 1st time after he wants to build a new ground of 50,000 .
WE SHOULD BUILD A GROUND THAT HOLDS AT LEAST 60′000+.
I know i keep going on about this but spurs will continue to loose there top players (sol, carick, berba) until we get in huge crowds like MAN U,ARSENAL soon LIVERPOOL , even NEWCASTLE holds 50,000+.
I know LEVY runs the club very well and its expensive but we have to look and plan for the future or we will just be another feeder club fighting for 5th place every season.
PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS I WANT TO HEAR YOUR OPINIONS ????????
Maur - May 8th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I am shocked at the interest and FEAR form Arse Anal fans here….
Wenger will be sacked next season when you guys finally find out he is a liability and you will win NOTHING with him in the helm of affairs.
Wenger is STINGY as he is thin!!!
1) He will NEVER buy an established player
2) He will NEVER buy more than 3 players a season
3) He will NEVER spend over £10m on a player
4) He will ALWAYS desperately look for players who are stressed or have problems like Kolo Toure
5) He will always look for young exploitable players from AFRICA or FRANCE.
The days of cheap players are GONE (even Yahaya Toure is valued over £12m) and Wenger will need to dig deep to replace Flamini (GONE), Fabregas & Hleb who would be absent next season. I can see BLOOD letting at the “immigrant” next season and the place becomes another Millenium project! Lets see how the FOREVER “baby” Arses win a trophy next season. Maybe the ladies will take over!(At least something to show for the season!)
With the SOLID rebuilding that RAMOS is undertaking at WHL, a double next season will be good reward for next season! I do not see Arse Anal in the top 6 next season with the spending policy of Wenger.
Bring in the likes of Eto’o, Guiza, Kemeni, etc and let the season begin!
