Bore of Britain: Why The Champions League Final Is Not For Neutrals

May 1, 2008

One match points me to come to this conclusion: The 2007 FA Cup Final.

A horrendous match for the neutrals.

Both teams had played out a long, hard season and it was a chance to show who was the best team in England. For Chelsea it would be because they beat the newly-crowned Champions. Manchester United, because they had a chance to seal the double. But with that, the prestigious FA Cup and the honour of winning at the new Wembley at stake the two teams cancelled each other out. No real chances were created and fans were only saved by a slow trudge to penalites by a last-gasp Drogba goal.

This is what I fear will happen in Moscow. It could even be worse. No disrespect to the FA Cup but a much, much greater prize is at stake this time around.

Manchester United have played some great football this season and I firmly believe they deserve their chance in the Champions League final this year. Regardless of how much I dislike them and wanted United to face old rivals Liverpool in the final, Chelsea deserve their place as well. They get a lot of bad press, Avram Grant especially, yet they have managed to sustain a title challenge on two fronts despite apparently being in turmoil - and this from a season where they have not splashed their billions.

However, look at how United played over the two legs against Barcelona and we see that they close up and cannot play their cavalier style of football when they only have 40% of the ball. And we are all fully aware of the stale possession football that Chelsea can play.

So with Chelsea sitting on the ball not using it and Manchester United sitting back waiting for their 40%, is the Champions League Final 2008 going to be the explosive encounter we all wish for? Beaten Barca coach Frank Rijkaard thinks otherwise:

I think they [English teams] have a lot more to give on the pitch to the public. It is strange to see English teams defending for their lives in Europe and trying to win games on the counter-attack. They can do a lot more than that. They have their own spirit and can play football on the front foot.

In European games they all get behind the ball when they lose it, they are very organised and try to counter-attack. It is a pity. It is not the most beautiful way of football.

What is the point of this article? Sounds a bit like you are tossing toys out of the pram. You certainly do not sound neutral, someone who has an irrational dislike of Chelsea or Man U maybe?

Maybe you will be suprised, I certainly was the other night, and that was mainly due to Chelsea attacking. Just as in the last 3 years, I’m going to raise a pint to the English teams in the final and enjoy the match. If you want boring mate, how about Milan vs Juve…..now that really was **** on a stick.

its called tactics, strategy, having a game plan etc you fuckwit. what would have happened if United went at Barca like they were playing fulham? messi and co would have had a field day hitting united on the break, exploiting the open spaces etc. United saw that Barca are tremendous at keeping possession and enjoy knocking it around, but they had been struggling of late actually putting the ball in the net (kinda like arsenal). So you make adjustments and devise a plan that gives you the best chance of winning over two legs, not the best way to entertain the masses. Yeah it might have been a bit more entertaining for the neutral i guess if there were 6 goals scored each match, but thats not the fucking point now is it? as someone on here said already, its not figure skating, you dont get points for style or being pleasing on the eye.

Other than that, I agree, the FA Cup final last year was an awful display of football, and it very well could happen again in Moscow. That, to me, is the nature of football though these days. There is so much on the line that teams seem to try to just not lose instead of trying to win. Look at the last world cup, do any one of those matches stand out as entertaining or thrilling? Fuck no, they were all awful with defensive formations and all chalk full of diving, cheating and wasting time. And I imagine it will continue at the Euros this summer.

I realize i am not stating anything new here, and i dont have an answer for it, its just daft of the author to suggest that united and chelsea are the only ones guilty of this.

And to Rikkard….you should have scored then, you crybaby whinning bitch. You had 180 mins to do it, and to be honest, bar one shot from henri in the first leg that went about 5000000 mph, but straight at van der sar btw, and one good shot from messi in the second, you didnt really create any chances. So you just come off as a frustrated sore loser who is about to be out of the job.

typical scumbag bitter and twisted liverpooh fan, oblivious to the only reason his team excite him being their being panic’d into having to attack.

    I’m a United fan actually. =)

Liverpool’s finals against AC Milan and the FA Cup Final against West Ham were great to watch for a neutral. I just know United and Chelsea won’t play that entertaining football with so much at stake. They will play a steady game, slowly probing each other looking for a break. And I happily used previous final meetings as my example. I am prooud that “English” teams have reached the Champions League Final - this does not stop me having a negative opinion of the game to come.

Had it been a United-Liverpool final it would have meant much more to the players and fans and would have been far more entertaining.

Thanks for such a compelling argument. I think next time someone has an opinion about my team that I disagree with I’ll stick with your attempt at criticising their teams tactics, calling them names and go back to eating my baked beans straight from the can, since you do it so well.
