Glasgow Rangers prove they are streets ahead of Everton.
by Dexter on May 2nd, 2008A clumsy equation admittedly, but Everton fell to Fiorentina in a tense penalty shoot-out in the UEFA Cup, and yesterday night Rangers went one better and beat the Italians 4-2 on penalties, a victory that has seen Rangers progress to the Final - and put Everton and Tottenham’s UEFA runs in the shade. Rangers will now face Zenit St Petersburg in the final, who ironically got stuffed by Everton in the group stages. Does this show that the Glaswegians are a stronger outfit than Spurs and Everton, or am I talking out of my backside?

I agree with you entirely. You are talking out of your arse. However, congrats to Rangers and especially to Davey Weir. Hope you win it.
m4re - May 2nd, 2008 at 6:30 pm
deciding a tie based on penalty kicks is a bit of crapshoot, and can’t confer that rangers are better than everton in any way.
oll - May 2nd, 2008 at 6:34 pm
yeah, you’re talking sh*t. Beating a team in a penalty shootout which another team failed to do so doesn’t mean that they are ’streets ahead’.
BrummieDave - May 2nd, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Well honestly no they are not a stronger outfit than either premiership side, especially Spurs - although it kills me to say. Rangers are a good side but an efficient side and if it came down to a war of quality players, Everton and Spurs would win hands down every time. Ranger’s best player is now at spurs and looking twice the player he was in Scotland, whilst Everton, although they may be a bit rougher on the eye than their North London rivals, Are a very efficient and productive with players in the same kind of class as Rangers. Neither Everton or Rangers play the brand of “Sexy Football” Spurs play, however, neither concede the ammount of goals spurs do either. It’s like comparing Ronaldo to Lampard. Both midfielders who get goals but two completely different playing styles. The question should be, who is the most attractive team to watch or who is the most likely to hold a lead or who has the best defence.
hotspur - May 2nd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
total crap.rangers were playing for pens from the kick off.judging a team by who their opponents knocked out is stupid.if thats the case barnsley should be in the champions league final ‘cos they beat both chelsea and liverpool in the fa cup

m4re so its acrap shoot take it you support everton so what you saying youd have gladly excepted a win from penalties but cause you failed its sh*t and yeah rangers are bigger than everton in every way better stadium better supprort if we had the money that english football gets we would have have miles better players too

Rangers bigger than Everton , I don`t think so trueblue . Average team in a piss poor league that any team in the EPL could win . Couldn`t score against the Italians apart from the pen spot . Bigger support in your head maybe , you’re a very average team .
BrummieDave - May 2nd, 2008 at 6:58 pm
trueblue you are right mate. If Scottish clubs had the money English clubs get they would be miles in front of the alsorans in the premiership. problem is, no1 outside Scotland cares and i dont mean that in a sarcastic way because i follow Rangers as well as my dad’s from Cumbernauld. Praying for the win for Rangers! Im not biased to any clubs in England other than Villa, but honestly I can see spurs being the ones who break the top 4 next year and push on the following season. Think with them signing Modric they are gonna be a superforce very soon and with a few additions. Villa are wll equipped also but i think we rely too much on Gabby and Young and if Barry leaves…

You may have beaten the Italians but the Russians will embarass you in the final and then we’ll all hear how great it was that you got there, not. Oh by the way Everton beat your opposition in the final in 90 minutes, with attacking football, not like that pathetic ‘We’ve come not to lose’ mentality your crap Scottish team showed yesterday. Toffee, I think you’ll find the fanbase for Rangers is huge, there is much more history, our stadium is a 5-star and still looking to upgrade. It’s only in the past twenty years that our league has gone into decline as before then, our ‘diddy’ league had at least five major footballing forces which could challenge and beat anyone from anywhere in Europe, especially and including English teams.
I’ve been reading a lot of comments about Scottish football and the state it’s in but surely that’s a null and void point considering we weren’t playing the the SPL last night. We’ve tactically outclassed (albeit highly negative) one of the biggest teamsin Italy TODAY, one of the strongest teams in Germany TODAY, one of the strongest teams in Greece TODAY and also one of the strongest teams in Portugal’s history.
If Rangers and Celtic were to be introduced into the Premiership, you’ll quickly find out how big our ‘average’ teams are. One with a 50000+ seater stadium, one with a 60000 seater and both with top class training facilities and you only have to look at our track records in the past 40 years to see that we’ve outclassed, outgunned and outscored more than our fair share of opponents.
If the same corporations were to invest in our ‘diddy’ league, I’m sure we’d be up there challenging at the highest level once again but as it stands, we have no chance. We’re a small nation who are doing our damndest to keep on competing and it’s teams like the Old Firm who are keeping the profile of the SPL up because our business strategies are top-notch and our fanbases are of the two biggest in the world. A lot of arrogant Europeans and English are quick to forget such facts and focus on the current which is sad. Very sad indeed.
I think you should all keep your mouth shut about the standard of our league and concentrate on your congratulations, not only to one player, but to our whole team. I’m thrilled that the UK have representation in the two biggest European competitions and I wish everyone the best, even if it were Celtic.
And what’s really sad is that if Rangers win it, the first thing you highbrows’ll comment on is how negative we’ve been, how ‘anti-football’ has won the day, etc etc. Well we are of a team which placed 11 players on the field against another eleven. We did not cheat, we did not bend the rules, we haven’t fucked anyone over and badmouthed the opposition before or after the match nor have we ever commented on anyone’s condition of their home league.
So on that graceful note, I hope you can understand our situation and believe that we’re a football team literally competing against all odds and if we come through with 4 trophies this season after the better part of 70 games played,
in our first season with a NEW manager after 2-3 years of winning wilderness,
with a completely NEW team who haven’t had the excuse of not gelling yet,
in 2 competitions steeped in eliteness even though we’ve competed admirably (who else have beat Lyon 3-0 at their ground this season? Man Utd? No!)
I think we will have the last laugh.

Deaconsblue - May 2nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
I also think the headline of this article is completely wrong. Rangers and Celtic and the rest of the SPL are miles behind anyone whilst they’re in the Premiership, hell some of us are even behind the championship, but I don’t think there is anyone right now in a professional capacity, who could say they could come to Ibrox, comfortably beat us then go to their home ground and repeat.
As it stands, we would probably employ the local bricklayers to save us the task of running about but either way, we’ve proved that we and Scotland, know how to defend. Isn’t that one of the defining characteristics of football? Admittedly we don’t have the tactical-nous to compete in an attacking or technical sense, however what’s an attack if you can’t defend? What’s a flick if you make a mistake and there’s noone to support you? If your team were to compete and attack so furiously against us, what happens when one of our (when fully fit) strong wingers breaks away and scores?
Wasn’t this the Italian league, one of the supposedly best in the world, like that for years?
What did Rikjaard just comment on in the press recently after the UCL semi? Someone please enlighten me. The English game hasn’t really changed at all, it’s just you lot can afford the players to individually make it happen. The only team who play as an attacking force IS Arsenal. And how many of their first eleven are English? Where’s the manager from? Hmm answers on a postcard plz.
You know, Rangers aren’t eleven players, we are one entity on the field working hard for each other. That entity may grow, shrink, morph, etc but we are one working unit and have proved that the best in the world can’t score against us if we try hard enough. I don’t care if it’s boring to watch because this time next year and the year after that and the year after that, which one of you* knuckledraggers’ll remember how we played? You’ll just have to look at the stats which’ll show:
‘UEFA Cup Final: Rangers (score pending) v Zenit (score pending)’
As the state of football stands, I’m at least proud of that, especially given Celtic appear in that same list within the previous 5 years. Doesn’t that tell you at least something? We’re a motherfkin monster waiting to awaken and unleash furious furious hell upon all thou naysayers… or something like that.
*the collective, short-minded football numpty who doesn’t really think because they don’t see the point in it

I’m not deluding myself at all. All I want is for us to be winners again. We’ll go from that. I’d be more receptive to comments about our style of play after 2-3 years possibly. Walter Smith is 10 times the manager he was 15 years ago. Before he was catering to those who wanted fancy football, now he’s old and wise enough to say ‘we need to win’. And who can say otherwise?
Toffee39 - May 2nd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I have no axe to grind with Rangers / Celtic / Scotland . You haven’t got much more history than us and Everton have also got a huge fanbase, yes you play in a diddy league , not your fault , but its a fact. As you say you outclassed negatively a top Italian side we actually scored twice against them ?
Unfortunately you ask us lot to keep our mouths shut, why don’t you check out what your fellow countrymen are spouting first . I’m not really that concerned about scottish football or who you beat , although you all seem convinced you could perform strongly in the EPL , we’ll never know.
And trueblue coming from Liverpool I`m very aware what an orange lodge meeting is , if it makes you happy, well done . Religion and sport ? Best left apart in my opinion .

penalty is a 50-50 kind of thing and so u can’t call anyone a favourite. i’m pretty sure if derby county SOMEHOW lasted till the penalties with man united in a cup competition then they wud have a good chance of winning just as much as united wud.
the only way u can tell if rangers r better is if they competed in a league which is as good as the EPL or if they played against each other. as for now ur statement is pure bullshit.

Unfortunately you ask us lot to keep our mouths shut, why don’t you check out what your fellow countrymen are spouting first
But your fellow countrymen are spouting similar rubbish about us so why should they? It’s eternally perpetual and I’d hope you’d be intelligent enough not to rise to such thoughtless, petty, indignant remarks otherwise this debate is a no show. Just a slanging match. I would like for everyone to talk on the same level. It’s not like a fan gets paid many times more just because of the team he/she supports, is it? Let’s be diplomatic and reasonable and filter out the shit.
although you all seem convinced you could perform strongly in the EPL
I’m convinced we would perform well. Why not? We have similar weather, similar intelligible regional dialects, similar stadia and similar size fanbases, so why wouldn’t we if we were given the same money? Give me a reason? We would also be a collective part of the EPL therefore people would be just as attracted.
My rants may sound like a huge chip on my shoulder, but I feel now I have to defend what is mine.

But he wins here! He wins against Europe, especially within the budget we have. The advantage we have now is that we have a son of Rangers in McCoist (it’s not too hard to figure that he’s being groomed to be the next manager and talks a decent game). Together and with Kenny McDowall and Ian Durrant, a good atmosphere is created which is what we needed after 8 years of in-fighting. The next stage we all hope is better football. You all have the right to reserve judgement but what’s a supporter without optimism?

As for this nonsense about what Rangers and Celtic would do if they played in our league,of course they would compete without a shadow of a doubt, anyone who says differently is deluded. With that support and the facilities they both have it’s obvious they would both very well.

Right I think its fair to say both teams our good
rangers have been better than us in the past but now i would say they are on the financial stance as us we have improved over the last few seasons and rangers our were we were trying to build I watch the game last night and yes i would say rangers were awful in an attacking stance
But you have give them credit for there defending
It would be interesting to see the two teams play in Europe maybe next year
But the topic of the post is wrong you can’t say rangers our better
As the two teams are different in their style of play
We went there and tried to do what rangers did but failed
But at home we played them off the park and should have won in my opinion
I still think the Russians will win the final but you never now
They are better attacking side but then rangers our a good at defending
It will be an interesting game and I for one will be hoping you do it as it would be nice for David Weir a good player and servant to Everton F.C.
To lift the cup at this stage of his career
Regards,
Stephen

Firstly, in answer to the question: no, Rangers’ penalty win over Fiorentina proves nothing in relation to either Everton or Spurs. Congrats to Rangers but don’t try to read more into the result than is actually there.
Secondly, to those saying that, if Rangers or Celtic were in the Premiership, they’d soon match the very top English clubs - I don’t disagree. But you can’t have it both ways. Rangers and Celtic have only become the massive clubs that they are by virtue of totally dominating Scottish football for the past 100 years and because they are practically guaranteed European football season after season. Had they always played in England, the chances are that they would be big but only averagely successful clubs - on a level with the likes of Man City.

I think some sulky English guys here! I don’t support Rangers but they are in the Final and you can’t dis-credit them. People say they are defensive but thats how Man Utd played against Barca. Everton and Spurs are good team but they are not as good as the Old Firm. Both english clubs have players who do not give it all for their club. Rangers and celtic have little money but have bigger support worldwide. Spurs have been boring and crap this season, with only a carling cup trophy to celebrate about. as for Ramos, complete failure and over-hyped manager. Everton have dissapointed for many season and this season the continue. Cannot qualify for CL group stage a couple years ago is insulting, tbh im suprised Moyes hasn’t been sacked yet, giving the amount of money he spent. Andy Johnson and Yakubu are overrated and poor strikers. Arteta is a gutless player. Was shit at Rangers and is still shit, left Rangers to go back to Spain but struggled to get a game, now in Everton, that says it all.

Why can’t anyone just except that Rangers are in the Uefa cup final? They do not have the money to spend like everton or tottenham but yet they are there! good football or not!! it only matters who wins the match. rangers have played to their strengths, we have a strong defence and we have concentrated on making that our style of play. During the summer i feel walter will add a few good playmakers to the rangers squad and improveour style of football. This was his first season in charge and he has done his best to get rangers winning again and as a rangers fan that is all that matters to me!! Manchester be prepared!!!

well done for getting to the final however it isn’t as if you haven’t had enough chances bearing in mind the drivel you call competition in the rest of the Scottish League
If Everton or Spurs were guaranteed to be in Europe every season purely because they play in a league with nothing but dross surrounding them I think they would reach the final more times out of ten than rangers have managed.
no one is interested in Scottish football other than Scottish people because most sunday league teams provide more skill and flair
As for going on about how little money rangers get compared to the teams in the Premier league this is simply because no one would watch the Scottish league and it isn’t marketable outside of Scotland - they had the choice to join the English league but in an atypically Scottish way they voted against it.

The marketing for the premiership is excellant, how else could you get people to watch f***in derby & boro and the likes (and you lot have the cheek to slag off the teams in the SPL).
Heres to the GERS winning the uefa cup & Chelsea winning the CL

Come on the Gers from an exiled scot doing missionary work in this pox hole England Manchester be afraid be very afraid!!! Unbeliveable thieving scouse twats going on about their little club which isn’t even the biggest one in their shite city how the hell can they compare their fan base with either Celtic or Rangers is beyond me! The problem with all these clubs down here is theywouldn’t allow Rangers or Celtic to play in the EPL coz with the exception of Manure and probably Newcastle they wouldn’t be able to cope with the size of the Old Firm.

Having lived North of the border for a few years I have seen both sides of the story and I don’t support either team.
Rangers are a massive club but play poor football at the moment, last year I watched them play Cally Thistle at home and never have I seen such crap in my life. However, they still are and always will be a huge club with huge support and history so they deserve a lot of respect especially this season going for the quadruple.
Same goes for Everton, big club, great history but in a more difficult league so its not fair to compare both teams. You met the same team and both achieved good results although luck was not on Evertons side. So lets just all be friends!

And I just love to get my frilly knickers and bra on at this point in the season. I celebrated our 17th league title with a new see-through baby doll negligée - my boyfriend was thrilled and rode me like a bucking bronco

Yeah Rangers are a bigger and better club than Spurs and Everton we may not play great football but we can get results ! against quality sides Lyon, Bremen, Barca, Fiorentina to name a few. The EPL is a four team league the likes of spurs and everton need to wake up you aint got a chance of making the top four !!! mon the Gers !!!
Canadian Gooner - May 12th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Based on anecdotal evidence Rangers are bigger than Everton if you count the shirts I have seen in travels in most of the world. That is NOT to say Everton are small, they are not..but Rangers [and celtic] are bigger.
Congratulations to Rangers and please don’t bottle the last few games of the SPL. Dont let the celtic bigots celebrate another league victory.

STYLES make champions. Italy won the World Cup on Penalities. Not the best way to decide any champion but if a team with better individual players (on paper) can’t put the ball in the net in 90 mins or extra time that’s where it’s gonna go. The Italians have played a defensive counter attacking style for years to great success…Walter Smith played it with the Tartan Army in Euro qualifying and beat the World Cup finalists (who were a better team than the winners), the style was kept by Alex McLeish and they beat them again and were unlucky to lose to the World Champions last November (because of a shoddy call)…Walter Smith knows what he’s doing and what he’s working with at Gers….it ain’t always the prettiest or most exciting fitba but it gets RESULTS…Gers are going to Manchester and Everton ain’t cuz STYLES make champions…this year Gers are a better squad than Everton end of fuckin’ story…and fuckin’ brilliant for Scottish fitba in general (Rangers and Celtic have huge support in Canada…can’t say the same for Everton)….so if the game’s a sleeper and it takes penalities tomorrow for Gers to lift the silverware???? S-T-Y-L-E-S M-A-K-E F-U-C-K-I-N C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S , C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N-S G-E-T R-E-S-U-L-T-S … A-N-D R-E-S-U-L-T-S
S-H-A-K-E U-P T-H-E W-O-R-L-D!!!!!!!!!!!! (just ask Faddy!!!!!)
We are thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa PEEEEEEEEEEEEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! C’mon tha Gers!

What a shit club Rangers really are. How often do people want an underdog to lose? Well they did last night. Playing for penalties from kick off, occasionally a long hoof up the pitch. Too bad rat boy Novo fucked up at the end hahaha. Your fans complained Manchester didn’t want you. That’s right nobody fucking wants your scum. Throwing bottles at the engineer trying to fix the big screen, nice one. Spoiling the champions league final for Utd fans, nice one too. After urinating, vomiting and throwing rubbish all over Manchester city centre you went on the rampage, attacking police, paramedics and cars. Well done Rangers fans for showing what they’re really about in front of the world.
efc4eva - May 20th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

say what you will, Rangers got there and you didn’t…..does that make Rangers better then the rest (albeit Zenit) not really. But to make fun of the way they play football is just nonsense. If Rangers play “anti-football and they are a shite football team” then maybe you should all look at the way your own team plays, because if we didn’t knock you out the team we played in the final did.
