Liverpool start the bidding for Aston Villa captain

May 2, 2008

Do I hear £11million for this England international? It’s not yet clear whether Chelsea or even Arsenal will enter the race for the Aston Villa midfielder although it appears that Liverpool have wasted no time since their Champions League exit on Wednesday night trying to recruit Gareth Barry. The Daily Mail report that there is a £10million bid on the table from the Merseyside club, who fit the player’s criteria in terms of Champions League football and a likely starting place for many of their matches.

The Reds are believed to have formally contacted Villa yesterday (Thursday) with their bid for the England midfielder.

There has been speculation for the past fortnight that 27-year-old Barry has emerged as one of Rafael Benitez’s major summer transfer targets.

It’s clear that Liverpool supporters would be delighted to land the Villa skipper, who has recently ousted Frank Lampard in the England starting XI, with Capello choose to play him alongside Steven Gerrard. It’s safe to say Fernando Torres wouldn’t be arguing with another playmaker in the middle of the park either, while the 27-year-old would also be good for 10+ goals per season.

Three things can now happen:

1) Liverpool land Barry
2) Another club bids for him
3) He talks to Martin O’Neill and decides to stay

The last option is looking increasinly unlikely, especially with Liverpool looking to steal a march on rival suitors.

So this is what happens when one of the “big 4″’s seasons are over…they try and sabotage other clubs’. Gotta love the Premiership!

I doubt this actually Liverpool itself bidding, because Parry, for all his faults, has more class than the timing of this suggests.

Smells like the Hicks entourage missing the point and firing off missives left right and centre. Again. Espeicially given O’Neill’s comments about it not being a straightforward bid, but instead a vague letter talking about undefined player swaps.

I’d be delighted for us to land Barry. But this is a shitty way to be doing business. The end of the season isn’t a long way off, and this should have been handled with a little subtlety and class at least until then.

i am sure GB will be off to LFC,AFC OR CFC.I just wish other clubs could challenge for trophies. Pretty soon (if it hasn’t already started )all competitions will be won by the top 4.i thought Liverpool had more class than to negotiate through the media and though it will never happen i wouldn’t mind if the top 4 all F*****d off and played their own mini league.Fact is though they need the fodder of all the other clubs more than the rest need them.

I hope he stops at Villa.

Why shouldnt he! Villa look to finish only one place behind the “Psuedo team” who just flew out of the Champions League!

Martin O’Neill has a reported 100 M Euro War chest lined up for the Transfer Window, and if he lets him know who are coming in… Why shouldnt he stay!

If Villa keep progressing, which it seems they will….. then next year Liverpool and Villa could be swaping places in the PL!

Biscan, spoken really well…Its a prick of a thing to do, and dont Everton and Liverpool have a rivalry anyway? Not the smartest idea to hand your rival a slight advantage in the race for eufa spots. Anyway, im not that dissapointed if Barry goes, but he must be replaced by an attacking midfielder with quality, like Diego or Van der Vaart. You cant go buying the Sidwells of the world on the cheap, it would be a massive step backward. I think Villa would do well to try and deal Barry to Arsenal for the frustrated Walcott along with the out of favour Bendtner and Hoyte. I think thats a value for value swap. Each one of those players would improve under ONeill especially Walcott. Its unlikely to happen ofcourse. Im not against selling Barry, but we need a value for value replacement in the midfield…..

Got something to say?
