Will Abramovich’s wallet get Messi into a Chelsea shirt?
by Dexter on May 4th, 2008 23 commentsIn a league table of truthful newspapers the News of the World would definitely be in the relegation zone – but here at CaughtOffside we like a bit of tabloid tripe every so often. Today’s top transfer tale from the News of The World is that Roman Abramovich is going to flip open his voluptuous wallet and hand over an obscene amount of dosh – £80million – in an attempt to snag Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. So is there any way that this nugget of transfer goss can be anything but an utter fabrication?

messi is barca’s prize asset and there is no way he wud leave the nou camp. at least not this summer. i know football is becoming a business these days but there r still those sort of players which u can never buy and messi is one of them. crstiano is another one and so is kaka and fabregas.
if this rumour is true (which i HEAVILY doubt) chelsea r gonna be turned down in the same way united turned down R.madrid when they wanted to buy ronaldo.

messi is the new generation of football. he will get chelsea to the top, but chelsea also need to replace the huge striker’s place DROGBA
andrew - May 4th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
dont make me laugh, messi only wants to play for barca, he knows he is the future of the club n isnt the type of player that would be swayed by money. + barca can match any wages chelsea hav to offer
andrew - May 4th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
nah barcalona r finished!! there players like deco r gettin older. and they rnt in form. players like ronaldhinho should leave while they have a chance especially the young ones like messi who hav a good future
Delusional - May 5th, 2008 at 9:16 am
After all that Barca have done for him, I don’t think that Messi will leave. Can he even speak English?
nocure - May 5th, 2008 at 11:17 am
Its not as if many players can speak English when the first get here but they learn. But anyway more to the point, this makes me sick! What Abramovich wants Abramovich gets. Well I hope not this time. Who would want to go to Chelsea anyway? They don’t even get on as a team. Drogba is a dic* and I hate him. Infact I hate Chelsea, thinking they can just buy teams best players by offereing them obscene amounts of money…just makes me sick

Its not about how much abromovich can offer messi, but which manager at chelsea can handle the likes of messi.Definetly not grant.

Well said, sums up the footballing worlds general feeling about Chelsea. Watch for them to do it again this summer, I don’t even think they scout players, they just watch for which ones L’pool, Arsenal and Man U are trying to sign, then come in and throw the Russian/Ukrainian oil and gas scandal dividends at them.

Even if they acquire Messi I don’t think it will make the kind of difference that Chelsea are looking for. You can’t change the intrinsic character of the team from the top down. I think in those formative years they made a mistake having Mourinho as manager. I understand the motive for Abramovich. He wanted results immediately and thought he could make Chelsea play beautiful football later but Mourinho moulded the team in his image. They became effective not attractive. You see flashes of billiance and genius but they are a team that dominate by physical force (let’s face it their players are huge and that’s Mourinho again) wear you down, bully you out of the goal area and grind out results. Now it’s hard to go back and redesign the DNA of the team. Arsenal at their best play beautiful football because Wenger instilled it in their DNA. I mean who wouldn’t want a most dangerous and creative player like Messi but is it really going to do the trick for Chelsea? I may be wrong but I think you need to just shake it all up and start again.

Has Messi got a say in this?! Surely if he’s got half a brain cell he would surely just laugh it off, especially if he’s watched them this season (or managed to stay awake.
Messi is an attacking flair player. He hardly fits in with their current style of “play” (loosely termed, i dont think Chelsea know how to play, just bore).
Why do Chelsea expect all the best players to want to play there? After all, they are never going to be a “big club” with history and glamour, just a club that struck it lucky after being halfway down Abramovich’s shopping list!

AFTER ALL THAT DROGBA HAVE DONE FOR CHELSEA,I THINK ABRAMOVICH MUSN’T RELEASE HIM
chima - May 6th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
the owner of chelsea just wanted to waste money. even if he succeeds in buying messi it makes no difference he will end up being like the likes of shevchenko whose sign on fee was a total waste to chelsea.
dogmanstar - May 6th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Even if he does sign, you’ll still get all the chavs whinging about injuries to key players after having already spend the GDP of Luxumburg in an attempt to win bugger all.
glenn froud - May 7th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Chelsea DO scout players and they also have a fantastic youth system in place. They signed a great talent through the scouting lines by the name of Di Santos, what a player for the future.
Also,if you owned a team with decent players worth, say 10 mill, and Roman came asking, he would instantly be worth 5-10 mill more, and who gets the money???? you do.So how can anyone argue against his cash when not one of you would turn it down..i think the word is hypocrites.
Its a business and all the great teams have their gallacticos and they cost a small fortune
nzioka - May 8th, 2008 at 7:20 am
yes, i think he is on his way to wearing a blue shirt. we the fans of chelsea we need him. he should not waste time in barc when they are dead and buried as a club now that ronaldiho is out messi should follow the same. welcome messi to chelsea roman!
RayParlourforPresident - May 8th, 2008 at 8:59 am
look at the way chelsea play, the most boring, passionless football in the entire premier league.
why on earth would Messi want to be part of that.
All creative flair from Chelsea is stifled by the way they play and the fact they are nothing but paycheck players who only stay with the club because no one else could match their inflated wage demands.
It would be career suicide if Messi joined a boring team like Chelsea, in the same way it has been for Shevchenko, Wright-Phillips, Malouda, Beletti
the list goes on, Chelsea need to play better football by playing with the passion for the club the fans have rather than just spending big on players who are only there for the money.
Glenn I am not saying clubs will turn down the money, that isn’t the issue – the issue is that you can’t buy loyalty, passion or heart and to be honest the only players at Chelsea who play as if they love the club rather than the club’s money are Fat Frank (although even he is ridiculously well paid and highly overrated) and Joe Cole
look at the players brought in and tell me why they should play with passion or loyalty when you also see how Chelsea play
kurt tabbott - May 10th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Messi will probolay go t helsea no team could turn down that money. also dogba to millan 20mill. swp to city for 12 mill. Then eto’o or torres in for 30 mill
