Arsenal in £50m super-swap deal: This will surely never happen!

May 6, 2008

Look closely at the source, yes it’s from one of the true legends of rumour creations! This really does make you scratch your head, a deal surely based totally in fiction or am I wrong, could it really happen?

Barcelona are planning a mammoth bid for Arsenal’s Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The Catalan club may offer Samuel Eto’o, Deco, Eidur Gudjohnsen or former Gunner Thierry Henry in a part-exchange deal. (Daily Star)

Pure craziness! Or is it? Well lets look at this carefully, Cesc has constantly said he is not leaving, so I believe him, which therefore leaves these rumours in tatters. Also in terms of the players offerered in any potential exchange, surely it would have to be a combination of these players, and not just one or even two of them. Anyway Fabregas is not about to do a Flamini, and it would be best for all concerned if the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid just kept their paws out of it! What do Arsenal fans think?

Why would we ever want dos santos, he is terrible and soon will fall out of favor at barcelona. I agree about denilson, he’s tough but he’s not for next year, keep gilberto now. Let hleb go . . No way to convince bojan to leave.

No way. Cesc is staying. It will be sensational next season. I believe in Wenger. He will make us rule over Europe and the Premiership. It’s just a matter of time. However, I still need three or four solid signings this season. We need a natural winger and a natural striker with a solid central defender. Eboue, Gilberto, Senderos must go. We need a deeper squad to compete on all the fronts. Our young talents will need some rest along the line. Hope Ben Arfa, Huntelaar , Barry, Pjanic and solid central defender are bought this summer. Believe me we need a big squad!!

What worried me at the end of the Everton game was the way that Flamini, Hleb and Cesc were walking around arm in arm and laughing amongst themselves. One has gone, strong rumour suggests that Hleb is on the way so what price Cesc moving too?.

I do not want to believe that either will go but………..

    on May 6th, 2008 10:30 pm

If Wenger is going to report Inter Milan to FIFA for tapping up Hleb, the same must be done with the Spanish big two. They in their arrogance must believe that they will eventually unsettle Cesc enough for him to want to leave. This is as underhand as buying an icecream for a player.
Thirty six years after starting to follow the Gunners I am seriously fed up of these stories every summer.

im with skins, Song has been solid at the back. His chances have been limited this season, but he taking these last games as time to shine, hes slowly doing so. Cesc is staying, if not then we’ll accept £100mill; Zidane went for £45mill at age 28-29, so ur see my point. We defo need width, with Vela back next season we’ll have it on the left. Get rid of Eboue, Senderos and bring in a winger who can play on either side. Djourou will shine next season when given games. also give Merida an Barazite first team outtings

    #12 - Big Scoop Says:
I said it before and I will say it again the best way for Arsenal 2 proceed is 2 change there formation from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 with Song & Denilson in the holding midfield role that is the future Arsenal’s best football came from this formation the Aston Villa fist half and AC Milan at the San siro but that’s not the reason why I think this is the formation that will bring success that extra defensive stability will make it more difficult 2 break Arsenal down Fabregas 2 play in the free role/hole relieving him form defensive duties with my preferred left winger Traore and whoever on the right as long as it’s not the hopeless Eboue with Adebayor or Bendtner as the lone striker at the back a new goalkeeper Frey or Gomes and replace Gallas
& Toure with Mexes & Barzagli Gallas cant deal with pressure and Toure is clumsy

    GK Gomes/Frey
RB Sagna CB Mexes CB Barzagli LB CLichy

    DM Denilson DM Song

RW ???? CM Fabregas LW Traore

    CF Adebayor/Bendtner

  21. on May 6th, 2008 11:13 pm

no way cesc will go, he is our fuure captain, need song to step up in place of flam, let gil big phil and nicklas go, bring in central defender garay midfielder ben arfa + nzogbia and striker either villa or martins. Need more depth in squad although we have the like of song, walcott + denilson to step up and make an impact plus we have vela coming back who is awesome and wil play from the left.

    on May 7th, 2008 12:39 am

First of all, Cesz will not go..trust me…Arsenal need him to develop a new solid team for next 5 years, and he might be the captain..
Flamini is excellent this year, his departures to Milan is a big lost BUT we still do have a young fresh player to arrive from the youth system that we can use..
I would like to see denilson and cesz in midefield..denilson can shoot from outside the box..that what we been missing this year..we just cant simply play passing game through out all the season..sometimes we need to play a simple direct football..and to get goals as well from midfield area..that part we are lacking unitl now..since pires and ljundberg are gone..Im expecting more from walcot next season as he got the pace, speed and good finishing..
ADE and RVP better be sharp and quick next season..sometimes our strike force is not consistent when we need that critical goals to achieve more than a draw??
And they are not playing well when involving in the big games..such as the TOP4.
If eto’o or obefemi martin arrive at the Emirates, that would be a huge additional to the squad next season..Henry back???? Nahhhh..i dun think so..

Well this is hilarious to see such a ludicrous rumor. This is something which will never happen. Arsenal doesn’t have any intentions of selling the ex-Barcelona and Arsenal sensation Fran”CESC” Fabregas. Moreover, Arsenal wont need any of those Barca players listed in the article, even if its Thierry Henry. I club and their fans have moved on since Henry`s departure. Yes, Arsenal does miss the presence of Henry, but his legacy on the youngsters of Arsenal are still persisting. The playin Style of Adebayour, Eboue and Fabregas are the proof for that. I hope Mr. Wenger will wisely sign a prolific player this season and soon get the team on the cup winning streak again.

this clubs are only good at poaching our best players
why dont they develope their own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Barnesy
    on May 7th, 2008 6:33 am

Um……………….just thought I would point out to chebon that we poached the Fab FROM Barca at the age of 15, so technically they did develop their own talent then failed to give him a pro contract because of his age, so Arsenal got him for about £2.50 !!!

Perhaps Arsenal should just try and unsettle the top players from their teams for a change, fucking so-called big clubs of europe always sniffing round our best.
Wenger will never sell him although I would be quite happy if they wanted to sell us Messi and Yaya !!

    ridiculous storyline

worse than that it gets the closet Chelsea fans masquerading as Arsenal fans all excited and we get more shopping lists and stupid predictions of where the new players can play without any thought as to the effect anything would have on the club

this will not happen… it is probably Cesc’s agent trying to generate himself some cash

Everyone knows Barca regret not keeping hold of Fabregas but I can’t see him going back to Spain just yet

  34. word
    on May 7th, 2008 11:23 am

cesc is not irreplacable. his passing is top notch but there are other players out there who can fill that role.

if the boy knew how to shoot i would not agree to this but as a key midfielder his lack of goals is actually quite crippling to the team

and yes his shooting skills are wank and predictable and the begining of the season was a fluke - hes no natural and hes experienced enough to have learnt by now

  35. Singy
    on May 7th, 2008 11:26 am

Cesc wont go, he’ll be either made Captain or Vice Captain next season if Toure takes the armband from Gallas (which i would have preffered from the start).

Song could easily step into Flamini’s shoes & would prefer him to Denilson, but then again he could cover the CB position aswell.

Jean Makoun II has been linked & looks like a strong possibility to come in the summer for a knockdown £4 million.

Id bring in Yaya Toure as he has been Barcelona’s best player this year excluding Messi & he’d relish the chance to link up with his brother.

CB id bring in Richards, but will Wenger spend £15-20 million on him . . . highly unlikely.

Wingers id bring in would be Ben Arfa & Krankjar (if Hleb goes) or Rafael Van der Vaart.

Forward, id take David Villa or Obafemi Martins (both pacey & have goals in them)

if a new GK was needed id like to see either Carson, Kameni or Frey come to the Emirates.

Wenger will spend this summer, but he definitely wont sell Fabregas!!

  36. Gurps
    on May 7th, 2008 5:16 pm

With all the rumours coming to the surface about Fabregas leaving or Adebayor or Hleb..it surely doesn’t spell out good things for Arsenals future. I am certain Fabregas will stay, but I cannot say anything about Adebayor or Hlebs loyalties. We play fantastic football but have lacked something this season, I think we ran out of steam and that B’ham game kicked our confidence a bit too. So confidence + a lack of steam = where we failed. We play the best football, devastating at times. I am scared now and I hope we don’t turn like Ajax.. who were once a great team..then suddenly when they lost their core of players they lost that spark they had. They couldnt keep hold of their players.. every season someone or the other left..Arsenal have some of the most talented players.. who will begin their footballing education with us but like Flamini will walk out on us when someone comes in with more money.. its not a wrong thing.. its not right either.. have to question loyalties here. Players are holding clubs at ransom to pay them more or they will simply leave.

Who will join us? Arsenal need a lot of stability at the back and in the centre of midfield. Sagna is solid, Toure is solid..but before he had a great Sol Campbell with him who could sometimes bail him out or assure him, now he has a very temperamental Gallas.. who you just don’t know what to expect with. Clichy is improving and is one of our biggest assets, that game against Man Utd..was a lion-hearted performance. Who does Wenger bring into defence? I dont think he will. Knowing him he will want to keep faith Djourou and bring in Nordveit and perhaps give Senderos a chance.

Flamini, to be honest, he was a great player for us.. but was very slight, I often saw him getting muscled out of challenges.. we need a composing figure in midfield who will dominate.. we still haven’t replace Vieira..we replace Petit with Cesc. In reality, I dont think Arsenal will sign a big name player. I believe people like Jay Simpson, Carlos Vela and Pedro Botelho are going to be introduced into the first teams. Simpson i think will knock off Bendtner, Vela will stake a big claim to be in the starting 11. We will see the best of Diaby next season, before criticising him you must not forget the guy was out for 8-9 months… and you cannot just expect him to start performing. Song is getting more and more consistant.. Walcott was beginning to assert himself a bit more. If Rosicky and Van Persie can stay fit, then they will have their best seasons in an Arsenal shirt… We have a lot of talent..its just the question of who would you buy thinking carefully about our pay structure and how will they integrate into our system?

No Way Wenger will allow this.We need a DM to compliment Cesc.plz o plz we must build a stronger defence .coz against Man utd ,chelsea we scored first but we were unable to maintain the lead. So………………

  38. RayParlourforPresident
    on May 8th, 2008 8:32 am

totally agree with Gurps, there are too many people on here spouting doom and gloom stories about where we will be without Flamini.

I think to be perfectly honest I would rather lose flamini and keep Hleb given the choice (not that I think we will be)

Adebayor scored 30 goals this season, all those who think you can “get away” with doing that in the premiership and still being crap need their heads examining.

we need to have a little faith in professor Wenger, he is an excellent succession planner, Diaby is a natural Defensive Midfielder who, whether you agree with his ability or not, does bear a striking resemblance in build and in style of play to Viera, he just needs a run in the 1st team to get him more consistent but he is definitely one of my favourite players we have. Song is a Cameroon international with a lot of football pedigree - we also know all about Cameroon’s style of play so again, when he has a run in the team he will be solid

Clichy and Sagna are arguably the best wingbacks in the premiership and, also bear in mind how good Traore looked against Everton..

I agree there have been some poor performances by our high standards this season but compared to other premiership clubs we have played with touches of genius that they don’t have even if we played badly.

Last year the problem was trying to pass the ball into the opponent’s net, this year Adebayor scores 30 goals and you people are still not happy!!!!

Rosicky has a huge part to play next season as does RVP, I too am worried about their fitness but please people, have a little faith

I think the future is brighter than you think

  39. Gurps
    on May 8th, 2008 3:41 pm

    Thanks Ray.

It will take time, but the future is most definitely bright :)

It pains me to keep having to say we’ll do something next season, but we’re going thru a transitional period, one which we’re improving so much.. every department is improving.. and we will get there eventually. for people to say Wenger has lost it is crazy, hes a great manager.. i think we need to support him..and commend him for producing what he has with little cash to work with..

im not a big fan of Bendtner, you can tell when someone has talent.. all he has is height, i dont really see him staying with us for very long.

Ray, I think Wenger will talk to Diaby and discipline him and try to turn him into the Vieira we’re all waiting for. He has come on leaps and bounds, I’ve seen him run through people like Vieira used to.

he has always been clear he will leave when he has given his best years to arsenal he will leave when he has played his testimonial thats when he is 27 - 28 years old and would cost a fortune, real havnt got enough money its all in instalments always. barca he would never play 4 again there isnt the right ethos at the club. he is the only arsenal player to have an amount clause put on him 70 million euros. diaby will play cm with cesc denilson and walcott on the right rosicky ben arfa on left . new signings denisov and jhonson ov man city cm bench, arshavin speaks for himself and whants to play for us, kompany cd or right back, chiellini ov juve pacy strong young need i say more can play cd lb cm v versatile. senderous, gilberto, hleb sell them or swap them, and adebayor if he keeps opening his stupid mouth to the press. apart from cesc everyone in that team could b replaced they need to remember that and stay humble. wishfull thinking. up the gunners.

  43. on May 15th, 2008 1:37 pm

RayParlourforPresident as always mate you make some good sense, unlike so many on here lol.

As you said the doom and gloom is being made out to be much bigger than in actual fact it is, dont get me wrong losing Flam probably wasnt a good thing but it is only a very minor setback in a campaign which has seen the emergence of so much quality from the rest of the squad. Walcott is improving alot, Ade has done really well this year and Nick is also getting better, Denilson looks good, sagna and Clichy were in my opinion our 2 best players, fabianski is also looking more confident and traore looks really promising. Add that to the fact Vela is comming back and the likelyhood is that Fran and possibly Nacer and Randall can make the jump to 1st team squad, lets not forget Song and djourou who look very competant.

all in all i am very happy with the season and to be honest yes we all want trophies but if you compare the value of squads accross the BP then arsenal by right shouldn’t even be in the top 4 and lucky to be in the top 6. Master splinter has done a supurb job and raised our expectations way above what they should be and always were. I see Lee Dixon surfing quite regularly and he agrees that although it is a dissapointment to not win any silverware this term looking back to the scenrio of relegation from the top4 as was predicted by a huge majority of fans/pundits alike and to top the table for so long with so many injuries and 6 points lost due to incorrect ref decisions,(which would have given us the title and a champions league semi final) i would say we had a great season .

Stop all your moaning, Man u should be top, they have a great squad which has cost them hundreds of millions and chelski even more, liverpool too. Until the emirates loan payments are more confortable and the highbury project is bearing fruits dont expect big money buys, but one day soon we will be able to compete on a more even playing field (unlike the pitch at old trafford…dig dig dig) financially.
