Liverpool line up £12m superstar bid – This guy would be great signing!

May 6, 2008

Rafa, always keen to add big name signings, has added another to his wish-list and this is one superstar who could prove very useful indeed at Anfield.

Liverpool have set their sights on Barcelona’s £12m rated French left-back Frank Abidal (Daily Express)

Eric Abidal is a quality player who has been a regular at the Nou Camp since signing in the summer, however he (like many other players at the beleaguered club) seems to be on his way out of the La Liga club. The 28 year old is a international fixture for the French team and is at his peak and would surely be quite a coup if Rafa could snare him. What do Liverpool fans think of this potential signing?

Abidal is not bad but is going through a bad patch at the moment and 12 million is to high a price for a 28 year old left back.

His name is Eric Abidal Read the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are not interested in signing him, ignore the media speculation.

Watched him against the manc scum thought he was very average and didnt seem worthy of a Barca shirt ..personally speaking I think we already has the best right back in the country with Carra with Agger and skrtel in the centre and maybe a quality left back im sure that would be the best defence in the country

Not a top player at all, not even close. Do you watch football? Would be surprised if Rafa, goes for A left back, with Insua now coming through. The lad is going to be A real star and the time is right to blood him. No need to spend big money in this position, Insua, is the man!

  11. on May 6th, 2008 7:43 pm

Its obviously a diversion rumour by Rafa, this guy is not as great as your making out, he was asking for himself to be dropped from the Barca team this season due to his poor form, albeit in a league which plays slower football and gives players more time on the ball, he would be better than Risse but not worth the asking fee unless ofcourse Thierrys on his way and Rafa trying to make it easier for the man himself to settle in with a fellow International in the ranks, Id prefer to see Insua promoted or the cheaper more youthful left flank partner of Babel in the Dutch setup…..Drenthe, others that have the right qualities are Lahm, Maxwell, A Cole or Chiellini

why are we worry about signing a LB ….remember the eye of sauron is heading back to REAL - heinze. barry will eventually be LB as well … quaresma to real it seems…and i think benitez is eyeing on chelsea overhaul as he tried to snatch this guy —shaun wright philip…RW ..for left..torres is requesting maxi rodriguez. if sven to leave man c….benitez will eye on these players : petrov ..elano …richards and johnson…wigan : valencia gerrard is not a happy man : to make this man happy..he’ll have to bring in owen back again swapping kuyt and crouch maybe pennant , riise as well … villa is heading to REAL .. no way benitez wanna reback a player who rejects LIVERPOOL… we got good choice this year : silva , joaquin, sabrosa..thats all for today

god!the comments from people here are utter crap!this is a guy whos been keeping patrick evra out of the french national team! and the system barcelona play, its no surprise abidal is struggling.so is zambrotta.
gerrard was shit against chelsea at stamford bridge.does that make him a shit player?(this is for all u asses who are talkin about the manyoo game.
12m is a bit steep but it is a quality signing if it were true and gladly have him slot straight in at lb.

ps. carra is as bad a fullback as riise

    Maybe Eric though.

i really couldn’t agree with you more vardhan, thank you for speaking some sense. i was beginning to think all us liverpool fans were disillusional. abidal is better than aurelio and riise, and i would be happy with the signing if both these got sold. insua looks a great prospect and should be competing next season for a place at left back. plus at the time abidal is beginning to decline, insua will be about 22 or 23 which is perfect. in the meantime we have arbeloa who can play left back should there be injury to abidal or insua

if we don’t get abidal, what does everyone think to the idea of urby emanuelson. i know he hasn’t been linked but i think he’d be a great signing.

I agree with ste. Insuna must get more games next season. Abidal would be ok but not for 12 mill. Thats a joke. We should buy at least one world class player on the flank. I like the look of the croatian winger at portsmouth Kronjkar. In a team of our quality he would become a great. Look at Ronaldo b4 he joined manur. I would spend 12 mill on him 12 mill on barry and 8 mill on abidal. This money would come from the clear out. If the yanks shut up and put the money on the table then we could spend big again on a top striker. I would go for TH at barca. If he would come to us of course. If not try and tempt the de cruz at blackburn. Top striker. COME ON U REDS!

Eric Abidal he is a carbon copy of Malouda but just plays at left back very overated player..Rafa should be looking at philippe Lahm for left back and Dani alves or Rafinha at right back and Some like ribery for the right wing or maybe bentley…But were still being linked to average squad players like Deggen!!we need to two world class full backs and a world class winger and then only will be ready to challenge even though INSUA looks tasty give him another year or so!!

    on May 6th, 2008 10:41 pm

I also so Vargas playing and his passing is perfect.. and of course we need that style of player so that Torres (and maybe a new world class striker) will benefit from his crosses .. not just the Gerrard passes. In my opinion Abidal is not the player we need to win the league especially with the likes of Insua coming up who for me is going to be a great hit if given his chance by Rafa.. silva and alves will aslo be a major hit

i think at the moment we don’t need to spend on left back.give INSUA a chance to play regular football..i saw him playing for the first team twice and he’s a good player with a bright future..

have we actually signed insua - or is he still on loan from boca? anyone?

i rate aurelio as a stop-gap over the next season or so - his injuries would give insua a reasonable number of games to let him develop

on top of at least one fullback and barry, we need at least one wing, one attacking midfielder and one quality fox-in-the-box

    ‘08/’09 4-2-3-1
    reina/carson
    carra/DEGEN skrtel/san jose agger/hyypia aurelio/insua
    mascherano/plessis BARRY/leiva
    BENTLEY/pennant gerrard/KRANJCAR babel/RODRIGUEZ
    torres/VILLA

    fingers crossed…..

with the versatility of players like carra, barry, gerrard and babel, we wouldn’t need much more than this 22. providing we could get this level of quality in, this would leave itanje, finnan, riise, alonso, benayoun & voronin as either unwanted, too old or destined to leave in my books. arbeloa, kuyt & crouch may not go as they’d be decent squad cover and i think benitez likes them. with the youngsters doing so well last term, why not use them as and when injuries require?

Why spend money on a left back when we got Insua? From what we have seen so far, he seems more than capable of fitting into the first team. I would rather have the money spent on other areas which is of greater concern.

well i think first we need to buy defenders, then to sale kuyt,he is trying but dont fo any effect for liverpool, have many players better than kuyt,i think next season kuyt will not be on the first team,so about Abidal well he is a great player alot with experience, lennon is good to,mancini etc.
so ithink next season wil be this formation :4-4-2 (reina, aurelio, agger, skrtel, abidal, mancini, mascherano, gerrard, lennon, attack torres and babel

abidal?hes better than riise but not worth for 12m,i would prefer lahm or bridge of chelsea.degen would be great to replacing hyppia that have come to end of his carreer.looking forward of joaquin n quaresma.but not to sell alonso.voronin get lost!!

my liverpool line up for next season: 4-4-2

    carson
    carragher,agger,degen,lahm
    babel,gerarrd,mascherano,joaquin
    torres,quaresma

if no injuries we will win the title next season.

I believe that Abidal is not a bad player. He has had a poor campaign, but so have many other Barcelona players. It is not about their potential, it is just that the union and partnership feeling that is needed in football (as in other team sports) are lacking in the spanish club. However, I also believe that the acquisition of a defense of the quality of the German international Philippe Lahm would be a great asset for Liverpool and that would solidify the defensive line, while also giving the team the possibility to attack through the sides using the defenders, as Lahm is a very agressive defender that likes to go forward and has a magnificent long-distance shooting.

  34. on May 8th, 2008 6:06 am

if abidal is a superstar, why Barcelona lost to Man utd?? Riise got many mistake at liverpool!!…i’d rather seeing Aurelio and insua to be a left-back…

  35. on May 8th, 2008 1:04 pm

I think Abidal is useless thats why we chould fire rafa and get Clinsman who would go for the best like etto or Boujan

  36. on May 8th, 2008 2:31 pm

hes a clown!!! we shud start insua all the carling cup games and wen were playing the likes of west brom forest fulham and sunderland he just needs experience!

    on May 12th, 2008 7:21 pm

Abidal! What a signing that would be, although 12 million is a bit much, maybe something like 8 million would be more appropriate. Then bring in a quality right back, maybe Philip Lahm or Rafinha (Preferably Lahm) and a couple of decent wingers, maybe Gareth Barry to play on the left and Bentley to play on the right and we’re sorted until january, at least. Babel could play as a striker with Torres and that way we could offload Voronin and Crouch. Kuyt could be kept as cover for Right Wing and Striker meaning we would then be able to also offload Jermaine Pennant. With Abidal and Lahm/Rafinha coming in we could also, with no disrespect to them, get rid of John Arnne Riise and Steve Finnan. Aurelio and Insua could be used as cover for the left full back position whereas Arbeloa could be used as cover for right full back position. It’s impossible to judge who’s better out of Agger and Skrtel at the moment as they’ve not played together, so I can’t tell which one of them would be used the most frequently at center back, but there you have it. That my friends, is a plan!

i must admitt that abiadal is a load of rubbish we need to spend big and i mean big. we need a better striker to be with torres co yu have to agree tht he cant always do it all by himself. get benzema in or david villa they can both score left right and center. kuyt is good but hes not scored alot this season 3-4 or even less in the premier league i mean come on. voronin is useless and crouch is going rafa has confirmed tht. we cud do with a better RM. messi (unlikely to leave barca) robhino?? not sure on many RM atm. mascherano is good for liverpool atm and lucas is getting better. alonso i think has gone down hill from a couple of years ago so i think he should go. try and nik nasri (marsellie?) or iniesta from barca (he could leave barca but then agen he cud not) ryan babel is doing good in LM but he does get tired quickly and he lacks experience wen it gets later on in the game. get silva from valencia or put in a big bid for walcott from arsenal becuase we and walcott knows that he does not get anough games at arsenal and if liverpool put in a good buy and a god wage for walcott he could leave them. try and buy sergio ramos from real madrid they want bout 50 mill for him but he is only 23-24 and he is a top RB or the other RB called alves or somthing :S. get lahm from bayern is it? and our CB’s is good atm but carragher is getting old we shud put in a bid for metersaker (dunno how to spell it) (not sure wot time but its german) and jose is guality liverpool just need to train him to put more of a effort in diving for goals. even if he doesnt see a ball till late he cud still dive for the ball and who know he could save it . .. well this is my dream team to fight for the tittle. we would be so better then now. and i must admit we are a good team now just not good enough
