Who should Tottenham sign to replace Berbatov?
by stresster on May 12th, 2008It’s goodnight from him as far as Dimitar Berbatov’s Tottenham career is concerned, one of the most talented players ever to wear a Spurs shirt. It’s now crystal clear that the Bulgarian is leaving White Hart Lane in the summer and, although Manchester United have reported interest, it could well be that the player moves to Italy or Spain instead due to an astronomical price tag.
The Times reports that Juande Ramos is starting to adjust to life without his star striker, although surely he doesn’t see Darren Bent as someone who can come in and replace Berbatov like-for-like? Who do you think the Spaniard should sign as a replacement?
“It depends on what the offer is and whether the club will accept that,” Ramos said. “I know big clubs want to sign him. The player will only go to a club if he wants to. We want the player to be happy. He has the key to this and it is up to him.”
Ramos admitted that he has considered several replacements who would be capable of building a partnership with Robbie Keane. “Obviously, we have to cover our backs in case the player decides to leave and we have to have options to replace him,” Ramos said. “There are great players in Europe that can do just as well as Berbatov.”
But how many of them want to sign for Tottenham? Magic Juande has shown he has pulling power by attracting the likes of Jonathan Woodgate, Alan Hutton and Luka Modric to Spurs, although to sign a top-class striker when all you have to offer is UEFA Cup football will prove to be a tricky test for the Tottenham manager. There’s a good chance that a forward will be snared from a Spanish club, where Ramos has an in-depth knowledge after his time at Seville.

well lets see, so far we have been linked with eto’o, luis fabiano, ronaldinho (technically not a striker), david villa, peter crouch, thierry henry, adriano, freddy kanoute, sergio garcia so take your pick
Anonymous - May 12th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
theres a reason he wants to leave, he knows he is above the club, nobody else at his level is going to want to join it
sam - May 12th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
all those big names spurs is being linked 2 is pure speculation. villa, benzema, etoo, huntelaar??? please!!!
villa has already said he’s not interested in going 2 spurs, benzema has said he ain’t going anywhere and even if he is barca is more likely 2 get him than spurs. huntelaar’s agent has said he’s only keen on a move 2 one of the top 4 preferably united. as for etoo, if he was on the move then i think he wud go to a team playing in the champs league.
so spurs fans stop dreaming. if u were in our position then maybe i wud believe these rumours. we defended our premiership title (10th time) plus we’re in the champs league final. long live united, moscow here we come.

Who is this Sergio Garcia?
Sofa King - May 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Bring back Jermaine Defoe!
iceycalm - May 12th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
sergio garcia is a spanish golfer. it was a bit of tongue in cheek i think.
so far tho, this summer, there has been no mention of interest in signing the berb from any other clubs. are the spurs board just trying to generate interest? have they decided they want to cash in on him regardless? surely that would alert the clubs to the chance of a deal.
Anwer Zaidi - May 12th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Adriano has a 4 year ban. Ronaldinho is probably going to take another 1 year break from football, David Villa will only go to a top 4 club, if he leaves, u might get Peter Crouch if offer is right, Thierry Henry has already said he won’t go to another London based Premier League club, Freddie Kanoute cant play english football, has been proven in the past, Sergio Garcia has real chance of joining, what with his new Taylor Made TP Burner.
southern spur - May 12th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
guys sergio garcia is the real zaragoza striker and not the golfer … easy mistake to make?
iceycalm - May 12th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
yeah - but he MEANT the golfer.
didn’t he?
fore!
southern spur - May 12th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
either way he would do a better job than bent
Dan Alvarez - May 13th, 2008 at 7:11 am
I think Alan Smith may be available….
Seriously, I would really hate to make another panic buy (a la Darren Bent) just beacuse we lose Berbs. At the same time, Keano’s getting up there in age, and the prospect of having Darrent Bent be a first choice striker would be about as appealing as stapling my nuts to a chair. First choice would be to hold on to him, which I think is unlikely. If I had to choose a name off the above list, that I think is actually plausible (won’t hold my breath for Eto’o) that wouldn’t make me want to jump off a bridge it would be Crouch. Having a tall guy next to Robbie would help b/c Keane isn’t a dynamic aerial player. However, I really question Crouch’s toughness sometimes. He’s the kind of guy who is capable of disapeering for long stretches, which makes me wary of breaking the bank for him. Villa, Eto’o, Ronnie, Thierry we have no chance of signing. I think Luis Fabiano is interesting but I don’t see us as a real frontrunner for his signature. Then again, I didn’t expect us to get Luca either….

Luka, my bad….

“Freddie Kanoute cant play english football, has been proven in the past”
the past couple of years have shown that freddie can play soem excellent football, with a good manager, linking up with ramos again could really turnaround his fortunes in England.
Also, since his last stint in England, Kanoute has converted to islam, which it has been suggested has been directly responsible for his change in attitude. A similar change has been seen in Nic Naelka since he converted. No longer chastised as Le sulk, Nic is now a very professional athlete(as demonstrated by puttin up with the crap football/players/manager/environment for nearly two years at boltan)
With Keane in the form of his life, the two could make a really good stab at reinventing their partnership next season.
Although, that said, now that David Villa and Silva are for sale…..
Anwer Zaidi - May 13th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
David Villa and Silva r going to Liverpool. They both said if they go to England they would “want to go to a top 4 club where they wouldn’t bench warm”. That means Chelsea and Man U are out the equation. I personally feel that Villa will go to Liverpool (Spanish Connections), Silva could go to either. Well thinking about it, if Tottenham make a big enough offer, they may get him. Dunno…
“Kanoute has converted to islam” i’m a muslim too
Romford Pele - May 13th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
what about Manuel from Fawlty Towers? Or, Big Bird from Sesame Street, if they can’t afford Crouch?
dna88 - May 13th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Alan smith is shiit … so he shouldn’t even be named as an option, I’m so glad we didn’t sign a while back when we were linked with him and he was still at manu… I think we have a decent chance of gettin eto’o , I’ve heard his fed up of spain and he wants to move, I heard before he joined barcelona he dedicated a goal to us (so it shows he respects the club to some degree) and surely he must know that english football is the best and we have the best league, period… Also eto’o would be loved by the fans and theres no way tottenham fans would treat him like barcelona fans did recently if he came, which in my books was abit of a piss taker coz hes done alot for the club. Spanish and italian football is pretty racist as well, he wouldn’t get that here (Its kinda hardcore actually coz kameni was getting racially abused by his own fans, he shud come tottenham too) .. Also I think he wants to go to a team that would see him as a star and with berba leaving he definately would be alongside keano ofcourse. So we can’t offer Champions league but we can offer him a guranteed first team place, a good coach, ambition and drive to push for champions league and he will be loved by the fans..
Other contenders: Huntelaar, Crouch (who I think is soo underated but not worth 15mil maybe sumwhere round 10 mil is just), Mario gomez, David Villa (but i really really doubt he would come) santa cruz (another guy i doubt will be making a move) Fred , Adriano (I think we should look into this guy coz we all know when his on form his world class, we should get him cheaper then his worth now and Romas should whip him into shape like he did with huddlestone, he would be one hell of a gem..Milito (saw a few of his goals could be a santa cuz for us )
Dan Alvarez - May 13th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
For the record…I was totally joking about Alan Smith, that guy is an absolute dog…guess it’s hard to convey sarcasm over the internet…other than that I totally agree w/ dna88. I would take a long, hard look at Crouch for 10 mil, but for 15 mil I’d take a pass….peace, dan

Just seen we have been linked with yet another player! this time its anelka. what do u guys think? not completely sure about that one but id take him over crouch any day
RayParlourforPresident - May 14th, 2008 at 8:29 am
I would avoid Anelka if I were you, I think there is a reason he is looking to move from Chelsea so quickly and this could be because he has seen better days. No denying it he was excellent when he played for us and a real prospect but, like most chelsea players he is now a paycheck player looking to make a fast buck prior to running out of steam, of the players mentioned I think anelka would be the one to be highest risk and more likely to be a Darren Bent situation for you after all what does it say that someone can perform at Bolton and not at Chelsea - you’d imagine the service at the latter would be far better.
He is also overpriced at the moment although as you say he may improve with Ramos as he did with Allardyce,
He is still a moody bugger though and has a similar attitude issue to berbatov.
DaNnY - May 14th, 2008 at 10:08 am
im a man utd supporter and i think that if ramos gets the backing from the board he can draw david villa to tottenham when we buy berbatov. But there is a dilema becuse if u buy berbatov and dont play him he will moan and thats not good for the team id rather we buy tevez permantley and buy mauro zarate as we have got mancuho for next season that angolan striker who was in the african nations cup first 11 instead of drogba and eto, so we will have a left wing and a striker in zarate and a six foot-three angolan who has got proven talent.
DaNnY - May 14th, 2008 at 10:11 am
im telling u totteham fans u have bought a quality midfielder in luka modric hes class and i hope u strenghten ur forward department and hopefuly knock them wankers liverpool out of the the top four.
HaTe ScOsUaS - May 14th, 2008 at 10:14 am
villa will never go to liverpool him n torres hate eachother they never play together in the spain squad they cant. Villa wont go to chelsea becasue they just ruin every good player malouda wright phillips, drogba, even anelka. If villa comes to england it will be to either spurs or arsenal, also with the money u wil get wen u sell berbatov u will easily have the funds to buy a player of villas quality.
southern spur - May 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I would doubt highly if villa comes to the premiership at all, i no he stated his disire one day but with the likes of real and barca looking for new front men i think he would see one of the two as a much better stepping stone for his career. Id love to be wrong however, he is pure class

I wasn’t overly keen on eto’o when his price was touted at something ridiculous like 30 million but if the papers are right (which would be a first) then 15 million sounds like a bargain and we should pull out all the stops to get him
Anonymous - May 14th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Every club in the world would pay 15m for Eto’o, no way he would go for so little
southern spur - May 14th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
your probably right but stranger things have happened. 15 million is just the opening bid, id expect a player of his standard to go for 25 mil.
sam - May 14th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
30mil 4 eto’o isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds. i think the most ridiculous transfer ever made was arsenal selling henry 4 16mil. he’s a legend and a record breaker 4 arsenal and 2 sell him 4 16mil is a huge loss. though i’m man u fan i have 2 admit that he used 2 dominate the premiership top scoring charts.only ruud could compete with him but he still used 2 be beaten. if players like berbatov go 4 25mil, henry shud have gone 4 35mil.
eto’o has done just as much 4 barca. well, not maybe as much but the point is eto’o is that kind of player who shud go 4 30-35mil. if spurs can’t keep up with that kind of price then too bad.

spurs will show there strengh in the transfer market this summer, big names are coming, does anyone really think we would have got ramos on the back of broken promises i.e our buying power. crouch smith are a big no-no, we are seriously looking beyond there little bit of talent. prem league be affraid be very affraid spurs will be looking to rip your hearts out next season bwa-hahahahahaa
