We’ve been here before. In the build-up to Chelsea’s semi-final second leg match against Liverpool, Rafael Benitez voiced his concern regarding Didier Drogba’s inability to stay on his feet. He also mentioned that defenders Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel had been briefed on staying vigilant when in close proximity to the striker, not that the pair could stop the Ivorian plundering two goals and helping his team to Moscow.
The Daily Mail now report that Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has spoken out ahead of Wednesday’s match. The Serbian also has something of a problem with the player he’s likely to mark throughout the match. Liverpool’s manager has already demonstrated that this is a risky move, especially as Drogba is already something of a big game player for Chelsea.
“Sometimes he goes in very strong and sometimes he pretends he is weak. He plays with your mind and tries to make the defender think about the next tackle,” Vidic said.
“He can pretend he fell down to win a penalty, but referees know that. The Champions League final is a big game and I’m sure the ref will know his job.”
The Red Devils also have a player in their ranks who knows how to win free-kicks. Indeed, despite an astonishing season for Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t completely lost the art of winning free-kicks for his team despite the most minimal of contacts. With the world’s spotlight on both teams on Wednesday, will anyone be flinging themselves around and risk incurring the wrath of the footballing world?
