West Ham set to sign £6m star: Fantastic player who could be a Hammers legend
by Mr Comfort on May 22nd, 2008For a long while now Alan Curbishley has been monitoring Reading full back Nicky Shorey and by all accounts the deal to capture the England international has almost been done.
West Ham United will sign Reading fullback Nicky Shorey.
The £6million-rated left-back will leave relegated Reading in the summer. (The Sun)
Shorey is a class act who will surely prove himself at Upton Park, he may be just the kind of addition that takes the east London side from mid table to a European spot. Equally impressive going forward as he is at the back, the former O’s man is apparently just one of a great many signings Curbs would like to bring in over the summer. What do Hammers fans feel about this potential signing? Is it a case of better late than never, or are there better players the boss could have brought in?

Problem is with West Ham, they piss about for too long and end up losing out every time, the BG is a billionaire then he should open his wallet and worry about balancing the books later.

Nicky Shorey put in 6 or 7 great years for us before following up with a serious let down and disappointment. In every game he’s played it’s been obvious that his mind is set on pastures new and he has just been relying on his reputation from last season and his England international status to keep other clubs interested. His attitude could not differ any more from Sidwell, who was an absolute professional in his final season for us.
However I believe that whoever Shorey moves to he will be back to his best and do a good job. It was obvious he’s stopped caring about Reading and wasn’t interested, but at a new club at which he doesn’t feel he’s too good to be there he’ll be back at England standard. However in my view he now goes in the same camp as Mark McGhee an Alan Pardew who were given an opportunity by our club and instead of ever being grateful for the chance we gave them, they just threw it back in our face with no loyalty at all. Take him, he’ll clearly never be the same for us again.

Would love to have Shorey on board, but McCartney would be gutted as he has had a great season for us. Why stop there though, I am sure Doyle would be a great acquisition as well. Lets steer clear from Saha and Diouf please.

What does it mean ? West Ham set to sign Storey. Are we talking about tomorrow, next week, next month or just another rumour ?
fayo - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:34 pm
iwonder if mc can play at right back that would save us 60,000 2 80,000pounds aweek
Steve - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I agree with Denis almost everything that comes on this is rumour or lies, how many players were we getting last season and look what we ended up with. Untill they sign this means nothing total crap.
HAMMER TIME - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Nicky Shorey will be a great acquistion to us hammers if we can manage to sign him, we need 3 new first team defence faces this summer and to start with Shorey would be great, but before we get too excited lets sign him first because this website seems to think we have got him in the bag , but i believe thats absolute bullshit ! We may be favourites to sign him but as we havent even lodged a bid yet how can this website be so certain!
Mark38 - May 22nd, 2008 at 9:45 pm
A hammers legend. Thats a bit over the top. Next you will be saying hayden mullins is an all time hammers great. Shorey is a mediocre defender from a relegated team. Not good but not bad either, nothing more than that. And at 6 million you might as well chuck your money away.
IronZ Man - May 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Shorey is a bit above average player. He’s no improvement on George Mcartney. Why would want to spend yet more money on just another reason able player. Where’s the talent evaluation at WHU? And I heard that Curbs wants to sell Anton Ferdinand and replace him with Steven Taylor? And possibly sell Ashton and replace him with Andy Johnson. Does Alan Curbishley smoke CRACK??! If these rumours we’re true, why anyone want to swap a 22 year old Anton to then go and fulfil his class ability and brilliant athletic ability somewhere else, the same for Deano. To end up with yet another DONKEY in Steve Taylor and even worse, Andy Johnson. Both are awful players. They both no better than Wigan or a promoted team. Why on Earth cant the ICELAND MAN fire Curbs and get us a good manager with some World Footall knowledge, instead of trying to sign every injury prone or average donkey that’s available.
It’ll take until end of next season, after another frustrating boring year of Curbs football. Then he’ll get fired.
By that time, we’d of probably lost Deano and Anoton.

In my opinion Shorey’s no better than McCartney, and i’d rather we spent the money on a new right back to replace Neill, who has been a big disappointment for many fans this season, and he’s not as good as he obviously thinks he is.
Sam - May 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Based on what ROYALS FAN has said, i don’t want a player like him in our side. What happens if things go tits up for West Ham? Based on what he says it will look as though he will be first to jump ship!
Bob - May 23rd, 2008 at 12:09 am
All we ever get from Curbishley and co is bullshit this one is being signed that one but nothing ever happens all they ever do is lay out money on wasters that spend all their time in sickbay, as far as Shorey being a West Ham Legend what pratt thought that one up??
Marleeeen depreciation society - May 23rd, 2008 at 12:37 am
i can’t see him being £6M if he’s out of contract or nearly is. i say we buy him as we have no cover for george mccartney. that way we don’t have to use the likes of spector as cover. it would also mean we can rotate a little. don’t believe what the papers make up about ashton and anton going, they have no idea, they’re just bouncing around their factless theories of possibilities in the hope of finding mugs that will buy their rags. we had the same thing last year and it all proved to be tosh. curbs needs to rebuild his reputation with the fans and selling ferdinand before he’s reached his potential would cause more than a few complaints and selling ashton would cause a revolt. i’m sure curbs will need to show this year that he has the potential to create a top 6 team and do it the west ham way. hopefully this will no longer mean playing 5 across midfield against teams like derby and 2 strikers for most games. it’d be nice to have lanzafame at the club as we’ll be lacking creativity with no other players, having the kind of tricks and skill to do something unpredictably special, left at the club

yeah yeah yeah nice i lke shorey can only be an asset but pleaseee keep deano here he has yet to show his best like so many ex west ham top flighters please dont KEEP SELLING US DOWN THE THAMES!!!!!!!!!

“Fantastic player who could be a Hammers legend”
Going a bit too far in my opinion. A very good player yes, but a future Legend? We’ll see.
englands number 6 - May 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 am
STOP criticising the manager and the owner, they dont make these stories up, true we were in for shorey before, and as for letting Anton & Ashton go, dont believe it, we are not like the board who sold the players that would have given west ham fans the best club team in the world, it sickens me just thinking of the team we would have had if we didnt have such a gutless money grabbing board of directors. This board is in it for the long term, only mug teams like tots, man city, villa, newcstle, bolton etc who sack managers every season have no vision.
im sure BG will get us there, it aint an overnight thing.
Kenny Irons - May 23rd, 2008 at 7:40 am
If the club is serious about progressing, we need players of better quality.
As for Curbs, is Shorey the only left back in the world, as he never looks at anyone else.We need scouts outside the M25 !! - over to you, Mr.Nani.
Need to get rid of the mediocre ( so that gets rid of about 12) and bring in players
of a higher calibre. Also, if we’re going to keep the nucleus of the injured brigade,
we need a few in, as I’m sure Roehampton haven’t got a miracle cure for our disabled !
Marc - May 23rd, 2008 at 9:17 am
Shorey would be a good signing and may even compliment McCartney on the left. McCarthney can push forward stepping into the inaffective Ethrington and Boa Morte position.
Anton can go… he’s a liability and its a known fact he wanted to leave last season.
Lets clear out the deadwood.. Boa Morte, mullins, spector, panstil, bowyer, Zamora, Wright, Quashie etc… we all know there is a lot of it.
I would keep Freddie, Lucas and Nobby for their experience, good for the youngsters.
Come on Nani use that influence to bring in the creme of new talent in from Italy and South America ! Excited if we do capture Lanzafame !
Two more experienced signings like Shorey, some young exciting talent and clear the fringe members we are there !
Lots of work to be done this summer
Tom - May 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 am
He’s not as good as McCartney, I’d rather we got some1 like Riise or Matt Taylor who can cover left-mid as well
Meh - May 23rd, 2008 at 11:52 am
Shame he’s only got one foot. The right foot is definitely just for standing on. He’s a good player, but to become a great player he will need to learn to use his right foot for more than just balance. He will do anything to avoid shooting/crossing with his right foot as invariably, it ends up in the stands.
If (when) he goes, good luck to him and thanks for the years of service. I hope he does manage to find a regular place in the England squad ahead of that cheat C*le.
Chicken Run Danny - May 23rd, 2008 at 1:32 pm
If only Boa Morte played every game like the last of the season he would become a legend, unfortunately the geezer is a lunch so must go, Alan Devonshire said at West Ham legends night cliff pavilion “Why does Curbishley buy crocked players expecting there long term injuries to dissapear” Its the ones who are long term we are gagging to get back, alas they are injury prone and it will continue on an on. Freddie Lunberg and all the rest, 2nd hand players costing sky high wages, wheres the young talent, give Sears a proper go, young and hunngry. We need a a partnership strike trio to take the game to other sides. George Mc Cartney plays with passion which all supporters especially West ham crave, thats what makes a hammers legend, Di Canio, Dicks, Bonds,i just hope Shorey aint go no poxxy sprained Handbag hiding away to expose on his first game. Give me £80.000 per week id give it 110% week in week out, injury or not.
Scooter Boy - May 23rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Football is business, to say “we could have the best team in the world is pure rubbish” just take Carlos Tevez, a legend at Upton Park, however, if any player in the world was offered to play for the biggest club then who would not go, Tevez has now won the Premier league and champions league, same for Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Glen Johnson, Rio.
If we only stay mediocre team, dont fully invest in quality with true guidance for European glory like the sixties then we will always stay mid table or fight relegation. Support is there, Curbishleys tactics i dont think are attacking enough, too slow to react.
jordan pally - May 23rd, 2008 at 3:10 pm
he wud b a gd signin but we can’t drop mccartney so lets drop neill for shorey
Ohio Scouser - May 23rd, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Never! Go buy John Arne Risse for that money and get a scoring left back who can push the ball forward and has been in big games before. Shorey is best served playing for the relegation fighting clubs. That’s his skillset.
chuck - May 23rd, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Yeah! once thought Curbs. was a pretty good manager, but to sell Ashton and bring in Johnson, are you serious!
Shorey as a backup for McCartney I can see, but face it guys “The Hammers” are a selling team , just look at the talent developed by the club playing elswhere in the EPL, sad!
Anyhow! wish you guys the best for next season.
SoCalHammer - May 23rd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Shorey has nothing on McCartney. A step sideways if you ask me. Unless Shorey can play right back. Then fine. Besides, until it’s on the WHUFC website and a pic of him holding a shirt, it’s rubbish!
RICH - May 23rd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
I SAW RONALDO IN NATHANS PIE AND MASH ON THE BARKING ROAD THIS EVENING , HE WAS TALKING TO CURBS , HE WAS DRINKING OUT OF THIS REALLY BIG CUP , ELVIS WAS SITTING NEXT HIM AND SHERGAR WAS TIED UP OUTSIDE STRAIGHT UP!!
