Chelsea make audacious move for Liverpool’s top man, and they might accept!?
by Jon on May 26th, 2008Reports are emerging that Chelsea have bid 50 million pounds for Liverpool hot shot Fernando Torres.
The Daily Mail reckons Roman Abramovich is ready to tempt the Anfield hierarchy with a massive fifty million, a figure that would help Rafa Benitez rebuild his squad.
An unnamed Chelsea source claims:
“There is a desire among certain people at Liverpool to sell at the right price. It’s just a case of whether they have the nerve to incur the wrath of the Liverpool fans.”
Let’s hope this is a severe case of early summer madness. Or someone inside Anfield is just winding Chelsea up.
If Torres goes, Gerrard will go too! No doubt about it. There’s no way the captain would accept the first decent striker at the club departing to another Premiership rival regardless of matter how much money the deal would bring in. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Benitez follow suit, either.
In the past, Liverpool fans would have laughed this story out of town. Trouble is, with Tom Hicks desperate to make money to secure the new stadium, there may be may be a grain of truth in here somewhere.
The Reds are desperate for world class talent. But selling the hottest striker in the league would be totally out of order.
What next, Chelsea to make a move for Rafa Benitez himself?

If Torres goes, then I’ll sever my 25 years of ties and support with Liverpool.
I will unsubscribe the sports channel and remove all things that is associated with Liverpool Football Club.
And I hope other fans follow suit.
alectricity - May 26th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
My first thoughts when I first read this rumour where the same as yours. If Fernando is to be sold, Benítez will quit immediately and Gerrard will ask for a transfer. And the yanks will be lynched by an angry horde of Scousers next time they set foot on British soil.
sean - May 26th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Errrr…Gillett would get half teh money as well wouldnt he? So Hicks would sell his star striker and get Gillett to give his acceptence alsong with the board. Given the board are opposed to Hicks do you honestly think they would accept a bid that undermines the club and would help Hicks (even though it doesnt help Hicks at all?!?!?!O)
Total and utter bollocks
Anonymous - May 26th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
even chelsea aren’t stupid enough to take benitez, he is useless
lfc norway - May 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
U are spot on king kong! If torres is sold then liverpool cant geth any lower as a football club.
SA Scouse - May 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I will stop supporting Liverpool if they sell Torres. It’s seems the board is no longer interested in football but more about making money. The Americans need to sell the club and soon if we ever want to see another league title.
Ali - May 26th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
What rubbish! Someone at despicable Chelsea is clearly making mischief, LFC will give this crap the contempt it deserves. Contrary to what people think, LFC is only a player or 2 away from being real challengers in the Premier League. The 3 B’s should be enough to make us real contenders - Berbatov, Barry and Bentley. Along with Degen and Dossena, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Roll on next season!
In Rafa we trust …
stanley ewuzie - May 26th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
torres is one of the key stars in reds squad so i think if torres go that means steve G will as well and i we be the next before any one else

jason from australia - May 26th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
im with you cribbo, australia has the biggest liverpool followinmg, blueforever fk off mate, all chelsea players have one thing in common, they play for money, and will choose the bigger pay check over a team they love, thats what liverpool have over you, you lack loyalty, we have players that turn down bigger money to play for us, we have players that will stick with us through thick and thin to succeed, where you have panzy players who will have a shit season and look for bigger offers cause there greedy fkassssssss and want money rather then success, fuk off you losersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
hum - May 26th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Com on guys, with figure quoted we could get a striker as good if not better. It would also allow liverpool to strengthen other parts of the team. Anyways this story is just somebody’s imagination, it aint gonna happen
sachin Sachania - May 26th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
WHAT !!!, ur saying Torres playing in the domestic cup & champions league & the domestic league for LFC would not generate an income around 50 milli turnover to the club at the end of the season . bullshit .
JERRY - May 26th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
that’s sounds nonsetical AND I would say that source lacked something 2 write
lupinsensei - May 26th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
what? you’re gonna stop supporting ‘pool if torres goes? the fact the story is utter balls is irrelevant. The fact is the club is in a hole which, yes, they’ ve dug for themselves, but it wasnt intentional…do you really think anyone involved at LFC would accept Hicks/Gillet with hindsight? of course not….They’re as embarrassed by this as any true supporter would be. The fact that there’s a bunch of people saying they’ll stop supporting LFC due to this? well thats a paradox right there…how can you stop supporting a club if you never started? ‘Pool is greater than the boardroom embarrassment thats stumbling through the media. Anyone want to stop ’supporting’ because of this then please do so…just dont come back.
Ashvin -Mauritius - May 26th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Torrres will never leave Liverpool for money , He could have done so when Madris made a sensational bid durinG the time Liverppol was scouting him, N u guys forget the “You will never walk alone ” Tatoo on his arm ,U think thaTS COINCIDENCE ? Hicks mite be willing to sell him for da money but believe me guys, The board will never let that Happen. We are so close to be a real contenders next season, We need only two natural wingers , 1 Full back n 1Striker .
Ma sel : Kranjcar , Joaquin , Lahm and Aguero .. YWNWA !!!
Jon - May 26th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
When I wrote the piece, I figured some lads in London at the Daily Mail were having a laugh with us. Still, all the major press have picked up on the story.
There has to be something behind the story for the Mail to publish but it’s probably no more than “We’d love to buy Torres”.
The whole thing smacks of Chelsea’s PR team trying to shift focus because they’re looking stupid after the debacle of Avram Grant being sacked.
Then again, if Liverpool sold Torres to Chelsea I would lose any faith I have in the club. It’s been rocked by the Gillet/Hicks fiasco, but I think we’re genuinely just one or two players away from a serious title challenge.
Look at our end of season form. Plus, Rafa is now being very cagey on our chances of the premiership. I think he’s wised up to how much easier it is to operate without putting yourself under undue pressure.
M. O. Blue - May 26th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Benitez for Chelsea, HAHAHAHAHA. We would rather give a retard like George Bush the managers role than Rafa “no idea” Benitez HAHAHAHAHA. Thank you liverpool fans for brightening up a miserable day.
sam - May 26th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
so Rafa ‘No Idea’ Benitez winning champions league in his first season isnt good enough for chelsea? i thought the champions league was the one trophy Mr Jose ‘Im the special one’ Mourinho couldnt win?
its no wonder chelsea fans have to whistle while on the toliet so they know which end to wipe.
kostakop - May 26th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Guys… It’s just smoke! Nobody’s gonna do such nonsense… Torres belongs to a CLUB with The GREATEST HISTORY, which despite some jealous people’s stupid shouts, is on the verge of becoming first again. Torres will be RED and alongside him fresh talent will be wearing the same colour… Despite our 18 years without championship, some people still cannot accept the fact that this team REMAINS the MOST SUCCESSFUL ENGLISH TEAM IN EUROPE AND DOMESTICALLY. Just be wise enough to wait for next year….
fowler9 - May 26th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
i really woudnt worry about this rumor it will go away once the euros start as chelski will be making overpriced bids for any player that can make two passes and tie their own boot laces
Ali - May 26th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
We need Berbatov upfront just behind Torres, Bentley and Babel on the wings, Gerrard/Barry in the middle with Mascherano to sit in front of Dossena, Agger, Skertel and Degen/Cara.
That’s a Premiership winning side, we don’t need prima donnas such as Quaserma et al. In Rafa we trust
Jon - May 26th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Berbatov IS a prima donna.
hyqel - May 26th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
it would be a crazy move….n i would really hope!!!!it would be the owner who leave my beloved liverpool fc…..liverpool fc is like my religion!!!!even though im from the other end of the world!!! in rafa we trust!!!!
SOS
DIC rescue us from the evil being!!!!!
Anon - May 26th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Torres isn’t going anywhere!!
One of the reasons he joined Liverpool besides getting champions league football was the spanish link… none at chelsea.
Regarding potential new signings…
Degen in as we know.
Dossena close…
Riera on left wing…
Barry in centre as replacement to Alonso who possibly will go if Barry is bought.
One other winger …
Who knows possibly… Bentley or Valencia for the right wing
Otherwise that’s basically it…. unless some other big development hits the headlines….
Look at the players that are going and that are staying…
Looks like just what’s mentioned above for the new season.
Ali - May 26th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Yeah but one that can SCORE and CREATE goals! Berbatov is the perfect foil to Torres
lfc true fan - May 26th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Over liverpools and my body. Torres is one of our golden stars, noway are chelsea going to get near to him. No doudts of Rafa selling torres.
lfc true fan - May 26th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
THIS IS A MESSAGE TO CHELSKI: NO AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN VALUE TORRES, SO SHUT THE FK UP & GET LOST. CHELCKI WILL NEVER GET NEAR OUR EL NINO.
JJ - May 26th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Abramovich would have to sell everything he owns, including the shirt off his back, to make this happen.
Vaisey - May 26th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
His armband proved he was a red
you really think hes guna sign for chelsea i think chelsea fans should grow up just because their best striker lost them the champions coz he slapped viDick. the only reason torres would leave was if rafa left which ent happenin end of story
gf - May 26th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
if torres is sold i will kill the family of a few people im sure you can guess who
ed - May 26th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
how good would torres be at chelsea. every one seems to choke there.
rich joe - May 26th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
whats all the fuss about? this has as much a chance as happening, as uefa giving john terry the champions league trophy because he “slipped” . the thing is liverpool arent as “skint” as everyone thinks, its a great business ploy to let people think you have not got a lot of money, because they will not have the trousers off you when it comes to buying! storys utter bollocks by the way!
Kunal Roy - May 27th, 2008 at 5:48 am
‘Trouble is, with Tom Hicks desperate to make money to secure the new stadium, there may be may be a grain of truth in here somewhere.’
Are you out of your fricking mind!!!!! Hicks will be lynched if he attempts to sell Torres….and so should you be for wasting everyone’s time by this utterly rubbish article
Riessy - May 27th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Those of you who won’t support Liverpool because of Torres leaving are pathetic. If Gerrard left because Torres left, he’s pathetic.
Torres won;t go anywhere for starters, and if he does why not do the gracious thiing and applaud him for his wonderufl efforts, much like West Hame did for tevez?
If Gerrard left because Torres did that’s just pathetic. It shows the whole time you didn;t have your heart in your club.
Also, Chelsea won;t go after Rafa. Grant did better than Rafa this season, why would Chelsea want Rafa?
Bill Vector - May 27th, 2008 at 9:57 am
are you shitting me up? is this true? if torres leaves i’ll have to support chelsea…. mongs
red4life - May 27th, 2008 at 10:57 am
torres to chelsea!!!!!!!!! hahahahahahahahahahahaha FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best striker in the world will never leave reds. he loves it here and we love him. get your own fuckin players u russian prick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ruprec - May 27th, 2008 at 11:16 am
i like red4lifes attitude, roman abromovich is also the man who claimed he wasnted hyde park to become chelsea’s new training ground so why are people surprised with this bid, he also just gave Mourinho a new 5 million dollar ferrari, anythings possible when u have billions, why go for Torress when youd have a better chance of buying Viduka the worlds graetest player
Bill Vector - May 27th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Put Abramothief in the Gulag where the bastard should be
