It was only last week that Chelsea’s captain was a snotty mess of tears and guilt after slipping and sending the Londoners’ Champions League hopes spiralling down the toilet. However, this week he seems to have forgotten all that missed penalty jazz, claiming after his goal in England’s 2-0 win over the USA that:

“The manager gave me a huge boost when he told me I was going to be captain and, hopefully, I’ve repaid him. I’ve shown that I’m a big man. I take full responsibility for what happened in Moscow but I’m a man for the big games and I’ve shown that.”

Yes John, if the definition of a “man for the big games” is someone who steps up to take the trophy-winning penalty in the biggest club tournament in world football, only to fall over and miss, then you’re a big game player!
