Arsenal want £14m Spanish striker: Is he a better bet than Villa?
by Mr Comfort on May 31st, 2008This latest striker linked with a move to the Emirates may not be as big a name as David Villa, Klaas jan Huntelaar or Karim Benzema, but since when did Arsene Wenger opt for the easy signing when he can mould a player into a star himself!
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is after £14m rated Mallorca forward Dani Guiza.
Other clubs besides Arsenal to show interest are his former club FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and AS Roma. (Daily Telegraph)
Dani Guiza is a hot property right now, the 27 year old has done the rounds in Spain but this past season, back at his former club Real Mallorca, he has been on fire. He finished top scorer in La Liga with an amazing 27 goals (no penalties) which is of course all the more impressive as he did so for a club who finished in seventh place. Do Arsenal fans think that Arsenal need more firepower, especially as it appears Adebayor is going nowhere? If the Gunners supporters want strikers, which marksman seems the best fit for the Emirates outfit?

Your right, Arsene doesn’t tend to buy someone just because of his name. I do think he will buy one 10m+ striker, my hope is it will be Benzema.
Rene Bruwer - May 31st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
The key thing is that Arsene buys a first class striker. We have to improve our strike force if we are to catch Man U and Chelsea, and to ensure that Liverpool don’t leapfrog us by supplementing Torres up front.
Mike - May 31st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Much rather he went for Eto possibly in a swap with Helb.
Gunner Man - May 31st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
If we’re gonna buy someone let it be Aguero, he’s better and younger than both of them, or at least he was in the season gone.
However Arsenal are not gonna buy a striker, RVP, Eduardo (making a quick recovery), Adebayor, Bendtner, Walcott and Vela (Arsene said he’d play both of them as strikers) are more than enough.
nik - May 31st, 2008 at 5:02 pm
we dont need more fire power we have plenty of threat in that department.
we need more steel in mid field and defence there the areas we should be concentrating on..
skins - May 31st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
A strong TALL centre half, Nasri and a world class keeper……done.
Big Gadge - May 31st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Agree with all the previous comments. Personally we could do with a strong ’spine’ GK, CD and CM alongside Fab. The attack is fine so let’s spend on shoreing up the defensive side because as an attacking outfit there’s no problem.
nik - May 31st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
ya ya would be ideal along with diaby stepping up to the plate he needs to improve on hes awareness alot only problem with ya ya is african nations we would lose to many players.one good thing can come out of it is our reserve squad lloks fantastic a bunch of stars waiting to shine…
Aleks - May 31st, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Santa Cruse is a safer option - he has scored his goals in EPL.
bubble - May 31st, 2008 at 5:12 pm
i can see Bendtner leaving coz of his relationship with Adebayor and the rest of the squad!
id rather have Aguero too but hes young and would be to expensive so this guy Guiza could fit the bill, just as long hes not a 1 season wonder!
Sue - May 31st, 2008 at 5:13 pm
We definitely don’t need any more strikers
Grimandi - May 31st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
agree that a striker would be an unnecessary purchase, wenger has often talked about not wanting to bring in players from outside and stunt the development of those at the club. so expect bendtner and vela to provide the support to adebayor and eduardo and rvp. i kno the last two are injury worries but it is implausible to have four or five big name strikers at one club, you just cant keep them happy. i think we have a good mix of experience and potential. and i havn’t even mentioned walcott! although wenger has said he will be used wide again he has shown recently he is capable of scoring and creating. so i think people are right to suggest defence and midfield will be reinforced. it is interesting though that we arnt being linked to any cbs when wenger said specifically he dont was looking for someone in this area. guess they get as many hits or sell as many papers as strikers do they.
wondrinfree - May 31st, 2008 at 5:16 pm
27 goals is an impressive talley, but, how was the team set up? If he was played as a lone striker or as the scoring half of a front pairing then that talley isn’t so good as pretty much all of Mallorca’s goals would go through him.
A few years ago Southampton had Matt LeTisier who had a fantastic scoring record. He was also there only striker of note and so looked even better artificially (he was a very good player all the same though).
As SAF once said ‘Statistics are like mini skirts they give you lots of interesting ideas but hide the important bits!’
ben - May 31st, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Unless someone is leaving no way will Arsene buy another striker. He believes in what he’s got which is Adebayor, Van Persie, Bendtner, Vela and Eduardo back soon. That’s 5 strikers. Keep in mind Arsene likes to play 4-5-1 sometimes with players like Rosicky or Hleb as second strikers and I think there’s enough in the squad. Assuming Nasri is a dead cert I reckon another midfielder and a couple of defenders are far more likely. Maybe a big centreback and a backup left back.
Felix - May 31st, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Guiza is 27 years old. Not gonna happen!!!! Wenger will never buy a 27yr old striker.
ForGoonered - May 31st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Arsene will not buy a striker, simple as That, he has faith in Bendtner and theres Adebayor,Walcott,RVP & Eduardo i agree we need more fire power, but Arsene just wont buy went there is hot talent at Arsenal Youth, such As Nacer Barazite, Luke Freeman & Hot Prospect Gilles Sunu
Big Gadge - May 31st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Yeah a back up to Gael deffo unless Gallas is back up for him. Not too sure about Traore as back up but he’s still young and a loan spell would be ideal for him. Micah Richards and Mertesacker would do and Gallas as back up with Kolo as rotating or even DM.
norms - May 31st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Nik says that we have ‘plenty of threat in that [the CF] department’ ….. the trouble is that it’s too much threat and not enough achievement.!
A decent CF would have scored 50 goals this season… Adebayor is good but not as good as he thinks and we need. His ball control is poor, his passing consists mainly of return passes to whoever passed to him and his distribution is sadly lacking. !00% effort, 50% achievement, just not good enough in a team that provides as many opportunities as we do.
Torres, Drogba…… maybe an Eto’o would have doubled Ade tally …. and we need to open our eyes and realise that nice guy as he is he is NOT the answer.
jean lu pooty - May 31st, 2008 at 5:33 pm
the poots figures as such….M.Veloso perhaps M.Richards or Vincent kompany and Nasri along all the youth(Merida,Nordveilt Barazite n a few others )cracking the ranks should give us the depth and see out a deserved championship season bearing in mind that Hleb actually stays(probably a fool but i never thought he was leaving so…) and Dudu speedy recovery stays on course RvP manages to get through the euros unscathed we are lethal and laiden with talent if Hleb goes and we get YaYa then bringing in another attacking midfielder could be ideal just to open up some choices but most of us know the final third isn’t where we have been losing games Gallas and Senderass make to many mistakes and that leads to costly goals we need another cb badly and interested in seeing how Song would do……. p.s Eboue must go back up to Sagna he wasn’t so bad as a rb but cannot bear to see him out wide again
Akbar - May 31st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
A stupid article. Look at the bloody age, you dont know Wenger for a penny. He goes for young fresh blood not someone who is 27. He sold Henry also cause his performance was going down when he was 27/28, and thats why he opted to sell him. Stupid rumour..
jean lu pooty - May 31st, 2008 at 5:49 pm
norms - what on earth are you talking about?? It amazes me how much you and other gooners are willing to stick the knife into Ade!! Jesus, without this guys contribution this season i dread to think were we would have ended up, Our real problem is rooted in the most shot shy midfield in the top four. We used to get an easy 30+ return per season from both Freddie and Pires, do we get that now - like hell we do. Apart from Fabregas who the hell have we got who will have a bloody shot, Eboue??? Pleb??? And also, when the hell was the last time a striker scored 50 goals in a league season?? your expectations seem unrealistic. Occasionally yes he is hesitant, wasteful and even arsey but this was his first full season and look what he achieved. Fair does he stepped up and filled the boots of the best striker (in my opinion) the league has ever seen. COME ON THE GUNNERS! CRUSH EVERYONE NEXT SEASON!!
Alan - May 31st, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Several issues:
1. He will not score like that in the EPL.
2. He may just have had a ‘career’ season.
3. It will take him time to settle as foreign players always do.
4. Eduardo seems to be making excellent progress.
5. The fee seems a bit steep when considering the above.
Gunner #1 - May 31st, 2008 at 6:47 pm
My hope is Ade dont leave, hes been unstoppable for us this season, his only downfall was the fact that he was so important for us and was relied on so much because the rest of our front line got injured, only if he goes do i think we should buy another striker, and in the event of us needing another striker, use the money for Ade to buy Sergio Aguero, THIS GUY IS FUCKING CLASS. then we get vincent kompany or richard dunne. Frey’s gonna cost too much so i think for a goalie we should get gomes. Hleb swap for yaya + £5m (thats flaminis gap filled) and nasri coming in nicely, theres the prem title, champions league, FA cup, carling cup with the youth. SORTED! And the good thing is those guys wont cost us, so there we ave it! GET WELL SOON DUDU!!!
robert - May 31st, 2008 at 6:48 pm
He has been fantastic this season but I think he is 1 of those players that are only good for 1 season, I dont think he is prem material anyway… PS, sorry about my english
daymee - May 31st, 2008 at 6:48 pm
I’m very suprised at a lot of the comments here.
I agree we have problems in defence and attack. But do we have a razor sharp finisher in the mould of Torres, Drogba or Ronaldo? NO
Adebayor is a very good player. He has scored 30 this season. I’m grateful he provided those goals. But players like Torres, Drogba or Ronaldo make the difference in a big game eg Champions League advance stages and the Premier League head to heads. You all saw what Drogba did to us at the Bridge and what he did to Lpool. You all saw how Torres was quiet for most of the game against us in the QF 2nd leg against us at Anfield and stunned all of us with a deadly strike. Adebayor has had flashing moments too this season but he is a far cry from what we need right now. We need 1 proven direct hitman. A feared assassin! The big teams have their “feared assassins”. We used to have one in Henry. I understand we need to strengthen in other areas than the attacking dept but I’ll jump at a chance of allowing Hleb to go to Barca and get Eto’o rather than YaYa. He’s been on trial here before and if he didn’t make it then, then having him now just means we really dont know what we want. Just think of having Eto’o Adebayor and Van Persie in the same team?
End of!
tim - May 31st, 2008 at 6:50 pm
i thik we could do with a striker, but we need a name like an eto’o, benzima, huntelaar, villa or even henry. just someone to come in and gt tap in would be nice, ade does get goals but misses sitters, need a van nistelrooy really who just picks up scraps. then we will be able to compete for the title.
nick - May 31st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
One more forward can’t hurt, especially if its david villa!! He and adebayor or rvp could be the best strike force in the EPL. Didn’t he want to come to us in the first place? Means he will also play with commitment. Wenger just needs to put in the right offer and we have the true replacement for thierry henry.
GUNNER 4 LIFE - May 31st, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Lyon is not going to sell Benzema for 10 m there is no chance, and the money they would want for him Arsenal is not going to give, so we can forgot about Benzema.
GUNNER 4 LIFE - May 31st, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I think Dimitar Berbatov willl do the job for Arsenal. Get rid of Ade because he wants more money and he misses alot of easy chances like against Milan on the empty net when Theo passed him the ball was emberassing how he missed.
Ellshep - May 31st, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Its not the fact we need a couple of world class young players.. wat we need it so get a decent team, like what we have, but players to fill in for injures.. We have a far to little squad…like a couple of you have sed, Ageuro would b a brilliant signing and a GK, and CB and CM.. striking power wise, we should sell bentner and get a more experierced player, but still in his youth, with a better striking ability.
LEON - May 31st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
if we can nasri arsenal will have no problems scoring goals edwardo bretna, rvp vela, wilcat and risisky will score 10-12 .
jemster - May 31st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
klaas jan huntelaar would fit straight into the arsenal squad quality player.not to sure about bendtner at the moment & van persie is a bit injury prone i dont think he’s managed 25 prem starts in a season yet.dont know much about dani guiza but he must have potential or arsene would not be watching him.i definately think we need another centre back id go for richard dunne a snip at £5m reminds me a little bit of tony adams.
OzGoonerGuy - May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
I’m hoping we can do a Yaya + cash for Helb deal with Barca. And of course wrap up Nasri. I don’t think Wenger will buy a keeper. Almunia will be No. 1 followed by Fabianski, Mannone, Szczezny. He’ll push the young guys through.
I hope he brings in a big CB like people have said, but who? Richards is the only one I can think of and we’re not being mentioned with him. I think he’d cost 20m+ for us to beat Man U to him so I can’t see that happening, even if he loves Arsenal. We should have got him last year.
Otherwise I know Wenger will promote Song, Nordtveit, Gilbert in the backs; Randall, Merida and more for Diaby and Denilson in the middle; Vela, Barazite, Simpson up-front. That’s like about 7 new signings to the first squad right there. No other team can boast that much youth talent.
And we’re being linked to a lot more 5 star youth as well - Coquelin, Ramsey, Chantome, Dabo, Matuidi…
But we need that big CB as a matter of priority.
stedon - May 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
well dat will be very good for ade and robin at the striking force.i think we need someone like him who scores a lot.
Pastime - May 31st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Arsenal need more world class defenders
Pastime - May 31st, 2008 at 10:47 pm
I agree totaly, we need no nonsense CB maybe two. Players like Adams or Bould
bobwilson - June 1st, 2008 at 12:45 am
need cover for Clichy
someone tell me who can cover for him
ruprec - June 1st, 2008 at 12:56 am
the guys are a consistant gosal scorer, not creative or any ridiculous skill, but nows where the balls gonna go , owen like, i rate this buy big time
MEL - June 1st, 2008 at 4:21 am
ARSENE SHOULD HAVE ONE FOR DUNNE BUT THE IDIOT IS NOT INTERESTED IN BRITISH PLAYERS ASS HOLE
guuner4lfe - June 1st, 2008 at 4:48 am
i dont think we will sign him the other clubs interested in him will out bid up i think a swap deal with barca would be great like Helb Adabayor and like 5 million for yaya toure and eto’o i think would make oour squad better cause if we get nasri then we dont need helb cause we also have walcott and rosinsky and face it eto’o on a good day is a hell alot better than Adabayor. so i think that would be a good idea. Also is it true wenger is leaving for psg when his contract runs out.
RAYS - June 1st, 2008 at 7:16 am
THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING I RECKON WENGER WILL LEAVE BEFORE HIS CONTRACT EXPIRES. I SAY GOOD RIDANCE
GILBO - June 1st, 2008 at 10:08 am
I don’t think Arsene will buy a lot of players, but for defence Corluka & Dunne of City, Taylor, N/Castle, Sharner, Wigan, Wheater M/Boro, any of those would do, I still think Barton, N/Castle would be a good midfield player. Why is everybody picking on Bedtner he will be a top player for Arsenal next season
cal - June 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
bendtner, eboue, senderos, hleb out
nasri, dunne, yaya toure, robert green in
arsenal have always kept their transfer dealings secret
always will do
this year will be no different and more often than not, if we are linked with a player we will not get him
this summers signings will come right out of the blue
Sixtus - June 2nd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
I have always been a great admirer of Oba. I mean the short midlefielder cum striker for Newcastle, Obafemi Martins. He is still young and can be a good asset to our gunners.
