Celtic and Rangers go to battle for £4m Premier League midfielder: Which club should he choose, and why?
by Mr Comfort on May 31st, 2008Rangers dreams of a quadruple faded as the season came to a hectic end but there is still no doubting the good work of Walter Smith and Ally McCoist and it does seem that both Celtic and the Gers are at a similar level now as both teams look to convert SPL dominance into European success. With that in mind a great many top notch players have been linked with a move north of the border and here is the latest one.
£4m rated Middlesbrough midfielder George Boateng claims he is attracting interest from both sides of the Old Firm. (Daily Mail/Daily Mirror)
32 year old Dutchman Boateng has been a fantastic servant for the Riverside club but after five and a half years at Boro it appears the former captain wants a fresh challenge. He could be a fine investment for either Scottish club, but who is the better bet? Celtic can of course offer Boateng Champions League football, but then again Rangers could do also (after the small matter of the qualifying rounds). Do Celtic and Rangers fans like the look of the former Feyenoord man? Which club has more to offer the tough tackler?

Celtic are clearly the better bet, i agree with you though, he would be a good SPL signing
will - May 31st, 2008 at 4:03 pm
he would fit in more at rangers, they r building right now and will be better than celtic next season, lets face it they were better this season but the fixture pile up got on top of them
Sense - May 31st, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Celtic - not good enough
Rangers - Do the need any more holding midfielders?
baz - May 31st, 2008 at 4:06 pm
will, rangers had to play anti-football to acheive anything and any time they tried to play 4-4-2 they got beat as shown by the aberdeen result. Next season i fear for rangers if they play 4-4-2 but also feel sorry for them if they play 4-5-1(anti-football)
bawbaz - May 31st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
What is anti-football? Please explain what this ignorant term means. And mindlessly quoting Frank Riijkard or Lionel Messi does not count as explanation.
Andy - May 31st, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Baz - fear for yourself
anti-football was 1st coined for celtic
pioneers in the art of anti football
we dont want anyone to feel sorry for us
James F - May 31st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
anti football was 1st coined for Celtic?
I love it when Rangers fans just make stuff up. Always good for a laugh.
Yeah, the Lisbon Lions really played anti-football didn’t they?
Listen to this clown - fear for yourself? What are you going to do?
will - May 31st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
playing to your teams strengths is anti football, the game is about winning, as i said rangers r building and can be proud of their achievements this past season
will - May 31st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said Celtic played “anti-football” following a 1-1 Champions League draw between the sides on November 24, 2004, this is when the phrase was first used with regards to a scottish team. bit of egg on face for u James F
jimbo - May 31st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
James F.
The phrase was used for celtc when they went to camp nou.
Making a prat of yourself seems to be a saying made for their fans also.
hector - May 31st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
No Brainer!
Celtic, traditionally attack minded, world renowned side, one of the greatest supported clubs on earth with an excellent young squad. By far the dominant force both on and off the pitch in Scotland with 3 league titles on the trot and ever improving performances in the champions league.
Rangers, No football pedigree to call on. Not known anywhere outside Scotland, Norn Ireland and the odd pocket elsewhere. Nacho Novo, Kirk Broadfoot, anti-football. Manger in waiting, the well known tv comedian - Sally McMoist. Sectarian bigotry at the heart of their club. A fkn embarrassment to all that is decent in the world. Truly Scotland’s shame!
Who would you choose?
Malone - May 31st, 2008 at 4:38 pm

That was one game - defensive tactics used against the best team in the world at the time - it has it’s place as a tactic, not as a strategy.
And Andy “1st coined” my ass, plenty of teams have been accused of playing anti-football at times - hell almost every SPL team play this way against Celtic week in week out.
Rangers over-achieved this season even though they only won two domestic cups, a big spend will be needed to be able to compete next year.

no it wasnt 1 game malone, celtic at that time were not an attcking team, they mostly played a long ball game and had plenty of big guys, a tactic(or indeed strategy) that bought them plenty of success, again playing to their strenghths, nothing wrong with that whatsoever, these anti football statements usually only appear when a team doesnt get the result they were after so they resort to underhand comments due to frustration, nothing more

Malone - May 31st, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Just because a team plays long balls doesn’t mean they’re anti-football or defensive, it’s just not “sexy football” - and the whole long ball thing was ridiculously overplayed, it wasn’t until Larsson left that the long ball became more of a fixture and even then it wasn’t as bad as it was made out.
jimbo - May 31st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Go and have a lie down hector.
Malone but for your team cheating at new year and then liewell and gold conspiring to gain advantage we would have seriously over achieved.
Its only because of this the bigots never got strapon the sack.
Worry about your own teams spending.
Danny Boy - May 31st, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Let’s look at the season as what it truly was. It was Celtic’s title to win or lose, and unfortunately for Rangers their over achieving this season ended short of the finish line. When directly compared, Celtic have the over all better team. I do not take anything away from Rangers season, they did extremely well considering their circumstances. But to say they had the better team is a gross exaggeration.
Trueblue - You are everything wrong in this world. Grow up.
will - May 31st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
celtics title to win or lose, lol, yeah on the last game of the season but for weeks and months before that could only be said for rangers, in all honesty both teams r pretty poor

The famine song is no worse than go home ya huns and is fair enough as from where I sit there is nothing that I see or hear that makes me think that you want to be here.
The big jock knew song is not to my taste but its not a lie or if it is Mcneil and some ex employees should be charged with perjury, I can point you in the direction of court testimony if you like.
I suppose Nacho Novo song about a bullet from the IRA is more to your taste.
Time to worry about your own team I would suggest.

trueblue: Typical follower of Scotland’s shame.
I for one look forward to seeing how Rangers top this season of bung probes & riotting fans. I suspect it will be revealed soon that they have started an illegal nuclear program in cohoots with the North Koreans in order to break in to the Asian fan base.

O’Donnell died with half a season left to play. Burns died at a time when the league could not and would not be extended any further.
Where exactly were the SPL going to slot the rescheduled Dundee Utd Game, when they had denied Rangers an extension?
Brad, here’s a tip for you… Sometimes it is better to remain quiet and appear stupid, than open your vile gob and remove all doubt.
Satan will take care of you and your constipation in hell, you filthy minded scumbag.

jimbo you are a sad, sad person. I find the Novo song disgusting, as well as any songs which support the IRA (who are a despicable terrorist organisation). I despise sectarian or bigoted behaviour in any form. How can you defend those songs which your own support sing? How can you say that the big lie is true? You horrible scumbag. Rangers take it beyond sectarianism. they make me sick.
brad - rot in hell you pathetic excuse for a human being.
James F - May 31st, 2008 at 6:38 pm
jimbo you are just making this up aren’t you? What are tehse websites then? And I have never heard of these songs about ridding the world of protestants. I am a protestant ffs. “Up to our knees in fenian blood” ring any bells big man? same old same old . A question aked wether Boateng should/could/would sign for either side, turns in to a f’in pathetic rant between who’s more bigoted who sings the worse songs my dads big than yours blah blah blah. You’re all pathetic the sooner both sides stop debating on who’s more bigoted the easier it will be to command respect as football clubs. The way the likes of you’s act is probably the main reason why we would never be accepted in the EPL. We’re both as bad as each other.
Ali - May 31st, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Who ever offers more money. Simple.
Who ever asked this question is just asking Old Firm fans to bite.
James F - May 31st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Back to the topic at hand. I don’t see how Boateng could really improve Celtic’s midfield. Robson and Hartley have been excellent in recent weeks, and we have yet to see the best of Brown, so I’d say no to Boateng.
Apologies for my earlier off topic comments, I shouldn’t have got involved in the who’s more bigoted argument thing. It’s too stressful.

True Blue you are not only the epitome of the section of the Rangers support that causes so much chaos on its travels but you are a fool. This enitre country was catholic before the reformation also if you are truly Scottish they you are also truly Irish. After all The Scots were an Irish tribe. Yes part of the Rangers support bring great shame to a nation whos fans for both country and the clubs that represent it are given such respect worldwide, however its hardly double standards by referring to somone life yourself as a shame to your club and country, while disliking being call a reject from Ireland as the part about yourself little man is correct.
James F - May 31st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
trueblue you are only embarassing yourself, and the decent majority of Rangers supporters. What makes you think all Celtic fans are catholics? I’m not. Has it never occured to you than many people support Celtic and Rangers for FOOTBALL reasons, not for sad pathetic sectarian reasons? It’s no wonder the Rangers support have a bad name when there are morons like you around. I feel embarrassed to live in Scotland sometimes.

Paranoid Timdroid - May 31st, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Celtic won the league because they picked up more points over the season. We deserved it.
Rangers had a great year, but their away form in the SPL was poor. The season extension is a conveniant excuse. Lawwell, the SPL, the Vatican and anyone else you care to mention had nothing to do with getting the Gretna game postponed, and the cup draws against Hibs and Partick Thistle. Yes, thats right, PARTICK THISTLE. That is what caused the congestion and confirmed that you just were not good enough.
On the topic at the top, he’s past his best and should be avoided by both clubs. Why bring in guys to do a job in the SPL? We should be looking at players who will improve the team in Europe. I’d hapily let him sign for Rangers, especially if Hemdani leaves, as it would be replacing a good player with an above average at best one.
Martyn - June 1st, 2008 at 12:30 am
Lol you do realise that the protestant “faith” was invented by an obese wife murderer just so he could divorce and marry as many wives as he wished. Also if you are truly scottish then you are truly irish whether or not you want to believe it or not and most of your family were likely at one point in the past catholic. However i feel it to be pointless having a conversion with you, if we can call it that because its like trying to communicate with an animal and by the rubbish and way you type you sound just like a silly little uneducated waster, just a product of generations of poor upbringing i guess. Its sad.

…………….and now for something completely different…………..an answer to the original question.
I think he’s to old, and quite frankly not good enough for either team. From the perspective of a Rangers supporter,i’d be looking at bringing in younger blood, and less of these pensioners looking for a last payday before retiring.
Fair enough Walter had to do it last season to shore up the mess left by PLG, but he’s done that and now is the time to move forward.

I don’t think that is a nice song but however the truth of falsified safety certificates , substandard building materials and several incidents of crushing prior to the deaths on the stairs was covered up and no corporate manslaughter charges ever brought. Rangers Knew!
Trueblue: Look at any coin in your pocket and that latin description actuallty says ‘Defender of the faith’ …..the catholic faith, nice of you to carry it around. And as for the ritchies from France……that’ll be that well known catholic france mate?
Another little aside: Did you realise King Billy was actually born Catholic (it all went downhill when he renounced his faith) was a hunchbacked dwarf with a penchance for small boys (a paedofile) …nice role model

I am nothing but a scottish rangers supporter and like most of my countrymen have never attended a church or a chappel on a regular basis, I’d rather go down the pub and watch football!
Neither club should sign boateng, but I think he may go to rangers if we don’t get Steven Davis which would be a shame for all of Scottish football.
