Liverpool after £5m midfielder: What a bargain!
by Mr Comfort on May 31st, 2008Kevin Keegan has apparently decided he wants to freshen things up at St James’ Park this summer so a few of his squad are being made available to interested parties, and the latest player set to be culled by King Kev could well be what Rafa Benitez is looking for!
Newcastle United are to make midfielder James Milner available for about £5m. Liverpool, Aston Villa and Everton are among several clubs after the winger. (The Guardian)
It does seem like James Milner has been around forever, but he is still only 22 but already has 200+ top level games under his belt. It’s odd that Newcastle would deem the former Leeds man surplus to requirements as he really is a good player who for some reason fails to get the plaudits i think he deserves. Still without a full cap (which is amazing given he has 30+ U21 appearances and the likes of Wes Brown have more than a dozen full international appearances). If he is really being allowed to leave the Geordies for such a small price, i imagine Rafa, and others, would jump at the chance to sign a player with such a lot of potential and a good grounding of experience. Do Liverpool fans think that at £5m this is a bargain not to be missed? Or are there bigger fish to fry?

5m, that would be a bargain, i think that for some reason Milner doesn’t get the credit he deserves and i think he could be a good solid player at Liverpool, he is as good (if not better) than the likes of Benayoun
SuperShearer - May 31st, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Can’t see Newcastle letting him go for as little as £5mil, he has recently signed a new deal and he is very young, which is something our new owner wants to build on. Add to that he is English and is extremely versatile and the fee would have to be a couple million more at the very least. Personally I’d be surprised if he wasn’t at the Toon next season as KK has said he likes him and the only reason he didn’t play more under him was due to injury.

Why on earth would Newcastle let go of one of the highlights of the seasons lately, But of course, why would we by anything decent and sell the few great projects other want, Seem like we are doomed to go down, and that the board are set to succeed next season the way that we are thinking. Being negative for a second. Please buy the prospects that we are after, and get seasoned players, we have to pay more and get better salaries as we are not in the lucrative London area that all the players want to flock to. There are other ways to get the wage bill cut down, Duff Butt, Amoebi, Emre, Viduka would be some of the preffered exits instead of Nzogbia and Milner. Get the grips and get going in the right direction… Howay Lads

Truth is that James tries very hard but ultimately is a one paced plodder and that pace is not very fast.
5mill for James MIlner is about right.

Thats a bargain price for a quality player. A good fit for Liverpool’s needs on the right flank.
Chris - May 31st, 2008 at 5:36 pm
So Liverpool want £15m for Crouch and expect to only pay £5m for Milner. Give your head a shake Rafa, if you want silly money for your players expect to pay silly money for other teams players. You can’t have it both ways.
elninoT9 - May 31st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
is milner not a left sided midfielder??
any way we need left wingers to so buy him. 5m is a bargain
Ali - May 31st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
All we need are Ribery, Berbatov and Barry. Together with Dossena and Degen, we will be transformed into a formidable side.

KennyPentrefoelas - May 31st, 2008 at 6:12 pm
I’d rather Benitez didn’t spunk any money on squad fillers.Save the five miilion and put it towards a bid for David Silva ,switch Babel to the right and you’ve got yourself one hell of a front three.

liverpool must first get rid of KUYT!!!! Rafa always choose a position for him!! he was first striker, midfilder, then winger!! How can he be better than pennant or crouch!???He may run more than any one but the fact is thta he cannot control a ball and make a proper pass.. overall he is not football player but a crazy horse that follows the ball every where!!
The key for sucess is to buy all english players available on the market. there are only very few available for the moment!! bentley and Garry shoulde be top prioroty for the moment!!!!!!!!!!! they are class players!! Milner not bad also!

Robert Brown - June 1st, 2008 at 1:42 am
Anonymous - answer me this, would Brown, Fletcher, Park, Ferreira, Malouda, Sanderos, Adabayor, and Bendtner get into Liverpool’s side? So, what’s your point…..?
Torres' former team-mate - June 1st, 2008 at 4:09 am
I’d personally would love to see the follow players join Liverpool!
4 players and we’re ready for the title.
- Richard Dunne - We’re not talking about bolstering the central defence. He is capable of marshalling the game and was man of the match when City played against us. He will certainly free up Carragher and our hero certainly can play as utility guy in our back four like how he was playing in his early part of his career.
- Martin Petrov - The perfect guy and we have seen how dangerous he is. We should just get rid of Voronin, push Babel and play upfront / rotate him with Petrov on the left. Keep Crouch and we’ll reap crosses from both Petrov and Pennant. Plus, the Bulgarian international was a former team mate of El Nino and he’ll certainly complement him in terms of style and play.
- Obafemi Martins (With Voronin gone, we can aim for a relatively short but fast paced striker - for a tall and short combination). Martins will be good when Rafa decides to switch to 4-4-2 and he’ll complement Peter Crouch. Heskey-Owen combination.
- Another playmaker will complete the purchase but there isn’t someone in my mind yet. This guy will be critical in the event Gerrard is injured. Benayoun currently looks like the one that will fit the bill but he still looks too light weight in my opinion. Plus Gerrard can’t possibly be filling in the hole behind Torres all the time and he’ll have to play midfield occassionally. Keep Alonso and Mascherano. We have a potent 2 x CMs already. Don’t mess it if it ain’t broken.

Why would Jimmy want to go to a team with smaller crowds and thats in decline?
kev j - June 1st, 2008 at 8:33 am
i agree with ali and kenny we should save the money and put it towards buying silva i know we are gonna put a £20m bid in for ribery if reports are to believed
allahs boot - June 1st, 2008 at 8:35 am
Milner is yesterdays hero.
Anonymous - June 1st, 2008 at 1:45 pm
huntellar, you suggested that “The key for sucess is to buy all english players available on the market.” I suppose that is exactly why Martin Jol’s Spurs won just about every trophy in sight?
rouman - June 1st, 2008 at 2:10 pm
unt111, youmug newcastle have never been in are league, and never will be. ask owen he only choose you because we said no we were his first choice. if he could he run back to morrow. he would. secondly what did keegan say we can,t catch the big four, yuo lot live in cuckoo land. whens the last time you won anythink? every year home and away we outclass your poor team. yes your no bigger than villa fulham , or westham.
lfc are the best - June 1st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
why on earth is he after milner for
boater - June 1st, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Rouman - are you a child? I don’t mean any disrespect you know… I read your message and it reminded me of a playground arguments about football! Ahhh wonderful school days nostalgia - thanks in a way!
I wasn’t aware Martins was an option for Liverpool!? Yes you are in CL but he has said he would like to stay - and if he sadly does go- it surely would be to Arse or Manure to suit his style more- no?
Milner would represent a punt for you guys… he may blossom with you and is versatile true… although his lack of pace and crossing/ passing finesse have held him back for us- bit of a Bowyer in a way.
Milner + 5mil for Crouch would be good all round wouldn’t you guys say?
Daz - June 1st, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Im not getting into a slanging match, but when KK was here last, we nearly won the PL, if only eh? would of shut 99% of the people up from going to the point.. and the only ever point of… when was the last time you won something. I must say, its getting very repetitive isnt it? I guess its all the single minded people can come up with though nowadays aint it.
Btw, Intertoto, although its not officially a cup, did we win it?
Anyways, id rather keep milner, wouldnt mind having crouch, would welcome him tbh. him and 2 small strikers, i dont see why it wouldnt work.
Andy H - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 am
Boater - Martins was offered to us - news talk however - Milner is a good player but I agree with what most are saying save the money and put towards real international quality
Villa, Barry and Silva along with dossena for me, would be excellent additions but again we have to be realistic over the transfer budget or lack of. We have to sell to buy so if we dont get rid of some deadwood we wont be signing anyone??. To offer Rafa £20m in this market is an absolute joke!!
Bill Vector - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:36 am
Torres’ former team mate - I agree with you on Dunne and Petrov - both quality but Martins is too greedy, not a team player. Santa Cruz looked better last season. Also, you’re right about Bennayoun - bit lightweight - they should get him in the gym building up his upper body strength - it turned Steve McMahon into a great midfielder and Yossi could yet become a great playmaker.
