Liverpool captain ‘desperate’ for club to make this signing

Will he or won’t he? That’s what Aston Villa fans are asking about whether Gareth Barry intends to stay at the club this summer or make the journey north to Anfield. Liverpool supporters seem pretty keen to land the England midfielder, none so more than their very own captain Steven Gerrard. The Daily Mirror reports that Stevie G is nothing short of desperate for his club to add one of his great chums to their ranks.

“I know all about Gareth. I’m good friends with him off the pitch and I’m desperate for us to sign him,” Gerrard said. “He’s a good player and would certainly help Liverpool be a better team next season. It’s easy to play with good players. I’ve been asked a lot of questions about Fernando Torres and the simple answer is that the game is a lot easier when you’re playing with quality players. Gareth comes into that category.

“He’s been a fantastic servant to Villa but Gareth is 27 or 28 now and he needs to play Champions League football.”

I’m not sure whether any player ‘needs’ to play Champions League football, although Barry has already made it clear that the time has come to be more ‘selfish’ with his ambitions. Can Aston Villa still persuade their captain to stay or is it a losing battle?
