Fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester United are going head to head in the pursuit of one of the brightest talents in the UK, but who will win?
Manchester United have upped their offer for Cardiff City teenager Aaron Ramsey to £10million to head off a late move by Liverpool.
Sir Alex Ferguson is bidding £5m up front for the midfielder, but insiders have revealed extra performance based payments could double that figure. (The Mirror)
17 year old Ramsey looks like a very level headed individual, he has managed to manfully deal with the constant speculation about his imminent move away from Ninian Park. It seems that United are looking to scare the Reds off by doubling the original bid made by Rafa, what now? Do Liverpool fans think it is well worth forking out such a huge fee for the teenager? Do United fans feel that they have more to offer the Caerphilly kid?

We should match the United offer and send them 2 of our youth players for the season on loan, Plessis, Guthrie, Spearing, Leto, Anderson and many more than could do with the experience,take your pick Cardiff.He’s made for Liverpool, people liken him to Steven Gerrard on his style, what better way for a player to become the best midfielder in the world than to play alongside the likes of Gerrard and Mascherano, with Lucas and Masch off to the olympics he’d be straight in, especially with Alonso leaving, Man Utd have great players but they cant compare to Liverpools midfield, the lad would become another Welsh Legend at Anfield following in the footsteps of Toshak and Rush. I don’t know why Man lover United and Chelsea continue to pay stupid amounts of money . They are getting themselves into more and more debt. Unt’s accounts showed the club’s total creditors at £764m. £666m is owed to financial institutions, including £152m to hedge funds ( taken on by the Glazer family) then loaded on to United itself. These loans incurred interest of £81m last year.
Chelsea are in a similar position except their loans are interest free from Abramovich although if he leaves, they have 18 months to pay 736million back to him.
If I was a Utd or Chelsea supporter I would be more concerned about the future than the present. Especially as wages and transfers are going up and up.Due to the credit crunch, these clubs will not be able to get future loans as easily and one day they will be absolutely screwed,have to go into administration and then its good bye.I am actually glad when these clubs pay a lot of money for players because it is a step closer to the end of these clubs ( looked what happened to Leeds).

In the season just passed, United were announced as the most profitable club in the world, and that was BEFORE we won the league AGAIN and the champions league. As far as the future is concerned, yes ferguson is going to leave at some point but we can attract any manager in the world to this club, the average age of the squad is so young and we have a board of directors willing to give the manager time. Players like Rooney and Ronaldo are still yet to hit anywhere near their peaks. Plans are in place to eventually extend Old Trafford to around the 100k capacity mark. How the hell is the future a worry?!

I,m 78 years of age and was brought up in the very poor area of Portwood in Stockport. During the period 1939/1946 I went along to watch football at Edgeley Park and saw some wonderful footballers playing together,very often from many differant teams from all over Britain. I,ve never until recent years listened or have ever read such childish ,silly comments that I,ve seen on these pages. Until 1950 when I joined the Royal Navy I went on my bicycle to Maine Rd.and saw over 90% of the City and Utd games which were usually enjoyed in the company of the other teams supporters. We had a dig or two but the information on football was great,and certainly learned a great deal from them. Sure I have my favourites and the teams that do not impress me, That is only natural, but to refer
to other teams supporters as I read in these pages is rediculas in the extreme. To call families ,mothers, daughters,siters,young persons as SCUM is to talk as
un thinking, uneducated low brow. Do you not understand that you are reducing our national game to the gutter. Watch and enjoy it, be sad if you lose and then really enjoy the winning. I got around the world in the 22years I served in the R;N:
and saw a game or two here and there, believe me, we are very lucky to be able to watch what we have. ( Check the TV stations around the world and you will see that the majority show more premiership games than any others) Be proud of that fact.

Hi, Mr. “More hope for the wonderful game”. I don’t go back as far as you do, but my first match at Anfield was a 2nd division one.
There’s a tale told of (or perhaps by) Alex Stepney, who turned in a great performance against Liverpool at Old Trafford. A couple of Scousers behind the goal threatened to take care of him after the game.
Afterwards, as Stepney was leaving, a group of Scousers approached him, and he thought he was in big trouble.
Relax, he was told by one of the group, “we heard those idiots threaten you, and we came to make sure you’re all right.”
Both clubs have long and magnificent histories, and may that long continue.
Am I jealous of United recent success? Yes. Do I hate them? No, but I do respect them. Too many of my friends over the years have been ManU fans for that. I’ve had some wonderful discussions about Best versus Dalglish, Busby versus Shankly, Ferguson versus Paisley, etc. For every discussion about just how good Duncan Edwards would have been there’s discussion of how Liverpool would have gone forward to dominate Europe again had Hillsborough not happened.
The point is, it’s all good natured discussion. These are two great clubs, with magnificent support.
And I hope that continues well into the future.

I know full well about the figures we paid for those 3 players, but my point is at United we take players to the next level because of the structure we’ve got in place. And you mention Ronaldo being bought at 12m…..if he goes to Madrid then the figures that are being talked about are around the 75-100m mark. I hope it doesn’t happen but if it does, i think you’ll agree thats not bad business and its perfect evidence of United’s capability of blooding youngsters and fulfilling their potential.
I don’t think I need to remind anyone of the history United has in bringing through youngsters, we’ve all heard the names that came through our ranks.
