£15m Liverpool midfielder could be headed home: Would this move work?

With all the behind-the-scenes talk between Liverpool and Juventus over the future of current Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, there has been little noise recently to suggest that a move is even imminent. And with Gareth Barry, Andrea Dossena, and a host of other Liverpool targets currently sitting on Rafa’s wish list waiting for funds, this wouldn’t be the best time for Juve to sit around and wait.

Based on the story coming from the Liverpool Daily Post, Juventus now has company in their pursuit of the Spanish midfielder after failing to close a deal in the last week.

With Ronaldo remaining at Old Trafford, Real (Madrid) are now looking at alternative high-profile captures to satisfy their supporters and Alonso, a Spanish international with 40 caps, fits the bill.

At the time, Liverpool stressed that they did not need to sell the player but with Gareth Barry expected to arrive from Aston Villa next week, the 26-year-old is resigned to accepting his days with the club are numbered. (Liverpool Daily Post)

To be honest, this deal makes pretty good sense for Alonso. He gets to go back to La Liga and play with one of the most storied clubs in the world, and based on Madrid’s currently need for a great passing midfielder, Alonso would seem to fit perfectly into the current formation.

Is Real Madrid better suited to Alonso’s game? Would Liverpool supporters welcome a classic battle for the midfielder’s services? Or would you rather see the club work out a deal with Juventus as quickly as possible?
