It would take a brave man to bet against this long-running transfer saga turning into an actual deal some time in the next few weeks, although it seems now that the player involved and his current club may end up falling out over it.
Gareth Barry is demanding Aston Villa allow him to join Liverpool.
Barry’s agent Alex Black said: “Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England’s game in Trinidad and told him how he feels.
“At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it.”
Villa want top dollar for Barry’s services and are refusing any player-plus-cash offers.
But Barry hopes a compromise deal can be thrashed out at around £15m. (various)
It could be a sad end to Barry’s long Villa Park career,as his honesty may well leave a bitter taste in the mouths of his long-term employers. After 390 appearances, the 27-year-old midfielder seems intent on taking his club career to a zenith he feels, probably quite rightly, the Midlands club can’t take him. On the plus side for Villa, they have had a marvellous season and have a squad full of young talent with which to build and the extra funds will come in very handy to bring in some new names.
