Arsenal lead United in chase for £10m ace: Will Wenger hold out for Benzema instead?

Arsene Wenger is once again linked with a young French international and, on this occasion, Newcastle United are also keen to put a bid in for this talented striker.

Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of Bafetimbi Gomis by lodging a £10m offer for the St-Etienne and France forward, who is also interesting Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers.
Gomis signed a new four-year contract with the French club only last week, but Newcastle’s offer will remain on the table throughout the course of the European Championships.
Gomis has been a long-term target for Newcastle and has been watched by Kevin Keegan, although Arsenal could yet scupper any hopes that the Tyneside club have of signing him. (Independent)

Gomis had a great season last-term and his efforts at St-Étienne earned him a place in the Euro 2008 squad, ahead of the likes of Trezeguet and Cisse. A striker very much in the Adebayor mould and, as such, it’s hard to see him fitting in a starting line-up alongside the Togolese man. However, there is of course a wealth of speculation that Emmanuel may be departing for Serie A, so I guess he could be considered as a potential replacement.

This is of course all supposition, however the 22-year-old does look impressive, but maybe Wenger would be after the likes of Benzema, who may or may not be within Arsenal’s price range. Do Arsenal fans think a big-name signing in the 20m bracket will arrive this summer, or is Wenger going to invest wisely in a group of new talent? Do Newcastle fans think that Gomis could be on his way to St James’ Park?
