Barcelona star turns his nose up at Tottenham and their tepid mid-table mediocrity…
by Dexter on June 11th, 2008Barca striker Samuel Eto’o doesn’t beat about the bush, and yesterday he was as frank as a Catchphrase contestant after being injected with truth serum and forced to “say what you see!” by a manic Roy Walker.
According to the Cameroon star, Tottenham are far too lowly for him, Eto’o smashed through Spurs aspirations with a cutting statement:
“Tottenham, and I hope the English excuse me for saying this, is a club in the middle of the table and I need more.” (The Sun)
A little harsh, but probably true from the big-shot Barca striker!

Thank God for that the thought of paying him all that money and transfer fee, when
he will not be able to replicate previous form when he had a quality side that made him look better than he really is.
In other words piss off Eto
Stylo - June 11th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
If he ever plays at WHL I’m sure he’ll be in for a lovely reception - best he stays in Spain methinks……..
Adz - June 11th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
This is hilarious … article obviously written by a goon , if man utd had one bad season and finished 13th or whatever would that make them a mediocre team? of course not. get a life
JimB - June 11th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Of course it is true. If Samuel Eto’o says that he needs more, then we have to take him at his word.
But that is altogether different to your claim that Eto’o had “smashed through Spurs’ aspirations”. It is just one rejection. Arsenal are also regularly rejected (with players also jumping ship at an alarming rate) so it is hardly surprising that the same fate will occasionally befall Tottenham.
What was anathema to Samuel Eto’o is a an “exciting and ambitious project” for the likes of Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos - and for the other quality players that Spurs will sign this summer.
And let’s not forget the most in demand youth player in England - John Bostock - who turned down advances from Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Barcelona, among others, to sign for Spurs.
Berbisoff - June 11th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Well said JimB. Caight Offside always try to provoke people in order to achieve as many hits as they can get. I use the blog, because it’s easy to respond without having to register. But it does post some terrible tripe.
I’m glad meself. I think he is a spent force, and he would have dragged us down finacially. There are plenty more options about, and I’m sure we will have a few gasps before the window closes.
Marc - June 11th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Barça has never been interested in that Bostock fellow. Probably just invented by Brittish press.
Why should Samuel be interested to join a middle club in PL when he has been playing for a European top club the last four season with Champion League football every season?
As for Giovani, first of all he wasn’t good enough, actually he was crap the whole season in Barça. He did not have patience enough in Barcelona. He is not a new Messi, far from it, and can therefore not demand an unrealistic salary as he did.
Good luck Giovani, you’re gonna need it.
leso - June 11th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Berbisoff - June 11th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Mark Bright said this morning that he thinks Modric will be another Rebrov. What a tosser. Of course being an ex Palace player, I think it’s sour grapes because we got Bostock.
Manc - June 11th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Definitely written by a goon.
What heshe forgets is how many Arsenal stars have left Arsenshole because of the clubs mediocrity.
Berbisoff - June 11th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Just shows how shallow minded you are Marc. He could have joined a team that won something this season, and not Pacemakers like Ar5ena1.
It seems that all you goon twats can throw back at us is our league position, pathetic. Dos Santos will succeed, and as much as it irks you to suggest otherwise.
You should be heading out to the airport to wave of all the players that can’t take another spanking from Wenger
JimB - June 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Marc - Barca were most certainly interested in Bostock.
And I’ve already agreed that there is nothing wrong with Eto’o deciding that Spurs isn’t for him at this stage of his career. By contrast, Modric and Dos Santos have decided that Spurs are exactly right for them, right now.
Win some, lose some.
As to Dos Santos, I take it that you are a Barca fan? In which case, you are displaying the typical impatience and intolerance for which Barca fans are rightly notorious. Dos Santos has only just turned 19. He has played only one season of first team football - for one of the biggest clubs in the world, no less - mostly appearing as a late substitute and mostly playing out of position…..
….and all Barca fans want to do is write the kid off as crap!
Pathetic.
Thankfully, I rate the judgement of a proven winner like Ramos over Barca’s unforgiving fans.
Spursforever - June 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Somebody should remind this high flying star (Eto’o) that Spurs won a trophy this season (wink wink Arse-NIL.. ditto for you mega-achievers as well ! - Viera just called and wants to know if you guys managed to collect a trophy after his last penalty……3 years ago !!!!!!). Our strikers dont get booed off the pitch. We dont need him. We have Giovanni….

Brightonyid - June 11th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
I seem to remember spurs saying they did not want Eto, perhaps its sour grapes as he is not getting the chance to join the exciting times ahead.
And Marc Bostock was wanted by Barca and i don’t think you have a good history of developing players from and early age leave that to the better run clubs
Biz - June 11th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Eto’o is simply saying that he requires Champions League football next year…
Fair enough.
I’ve been given a tip for a player about to sign so I called the bookies (several in fact) and no-one will give odds on it ‘cos theres no speculation he’s moving…
I’m more than a little annoyed right now - ‘cos he is!
seamus - June 11th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Who cares about eto it is just one player and with the transfer fee that was metioned and the wages he would not have been worth it ,the same goes for david villa why spend all our transfer kitty on one player , believe in Ramos he has someone lined up if and I mean if berba goes .
savefootball - June 11th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
eto’o was in the top 3 players in the world 2 years ago and although barcelona have dipped form he has still looked one of their best players. i think he would show the form he had a few years back if sold to an in form team. he is above spurs and definately worth more than 20m when you consider what they bought darren bent for
Marc - June 11th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Berbisoffon,
I couldn’t care less about Arse. That’s a team I really don’t like.
JimBon,
Correct, I’m a Barça fan living in Barcelona so I know for sure that Barça never have been interested in Bostock. Belive what you want. They probably have at least 20-30 players from their youth accademy that are greater talents.
As for Giovani. I never wanted the club to ship him off and specially not sell him that cheap, in fact I’m furious with the board for doing that. I’m not impatience as you suggest and I love it when our “canteranos” from La Masia made it to the first team. Just like Bojan, Messi, Giovani, Iniesta, Pyuol, Xavi and Valdés did. There’s a new wonderkid named Gai Assulin who’s next to take the big step, maybe next season, and he has just turned 17. He’s a far greater talent than Giovani will ever be.
The problem with Giovani is that he’s the one that is impatience. This is probably his sly and greedy agent Pini Zahavis fault. I think he has twisted Giovani’s head. Giovani has shown bad attitude, well not on the pitch but off it, and this is probably his agent fault.
Gavaldinho - June 11th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Biz, you not on P&R anymore??? Who was this person that you tried to get a bookies price on???
Bobby - June 11th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Lets face it, why would Eto’o take a pay cut to go to a mid table team like Spurs and not play Champions League footy?
On the other hand why would Spurs want to buy an overrated prima donna who loses friends wherever he goes, who thinks he is bigger than the team in which he plays and who probably only two decent seasons left in his boots? This was never a deal and I am more than happy. Spurs had a blip last season due to trouble in the boardroom and a change of manager. Next season will be different and I’m glad young stars such as Modric and Dos Santos can see that.
Fish-On - June 11th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Et’o is not what we should be looking at. Keep Berbatov, convince him that with the likes of Giovanni and Modric and a fit Bale to feed him (and off him) Spurs is the place to be. A couple of good defensive signings and we should push up the table next season and break into the top 4 in 2010.
JimB - June 11th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Marc - we shall have to agree to disagree about Bostock. My info is that Barca were most certainly interested in buying him.
As to Dos Santos….yes, he probably is impatient. But why shouldn’t he be? It’s his career, after all, and he may well believe that he is not going to get enough of a chance to grow as a first team player at Barca. In which case, I can easily understand that playing for a highly respected manager of a very ambitious and progressive club in what is probably now the best domestic league in the world is a highly attractive proposition for Dos Santos.
If all that wasn’t enough, I can well imagine that the slaughtering he took from Barca fans was enough to turn him away from the club. Can you blame him?
Carlos Vela - June 11th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I score 3 goals in 33 Games last season, I great striker
Marc - June 11th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
JimBon,
the only reason Giovani choosed Tottenham was because of Juande Ramos beeing their coach. He doesn’t speak English so the adaption will be easier for him there.
As for the booing from the fans, you proably don’t know the full story. I agree on that you never should boo your own players. Specially not the ones coming from the cantera (academy). It wasn’t nice of the fans booing him on his birthday at Camp Nou. Pathetic gesture from the fans, well not all fans but some of them. But the stories in newspapers, that he was to greedy (probably his agent’s idea) when it came to sign a new contract was a important factor him beeing booed. T
The fans want their youth talents to show some patience, he was only 18 when he was promoted to the first team, and he was getting plenty of minutes on the pitch. At least for a first season player in the first team. Compare him with Bojan, who never showed that bad attitude off the pitch as Giovani did. There were rumours that Giovani was out late at night partying, together with other black sheeps ( I guess you can imagine who those were), and this didn’t help his case.
Tom - June 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I think Spurs turned their nose up at his wage demands first actually!
Biz - June 11th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Gavaldinho - mate I was away (not prison!) came back to P&R and everyone had gone!
I’d love to share - but this is top, top, top secret! I honestly don’t know if’d have put a bet on ‘cos I wouldn’t wanna jepordise the club’s position.
He’s 32. All I can say…
Marc - June 11th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Carlos Vela, very funny.
How many goals did Carlos Vela score then?
You probably don’t know this, but Giovani has always been considered as the greater talent of the two, in Mexico. Vela will never made it in the Premiership, I can guarantee that.
~SPURDABOYZON - June 11th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Yesterday on Newsnow after this story broke, 15 different site post different headline, Only one post the truth without a twist of truth !
Its been used as a dig at Spurs when Eto is right, we finish mid table last year, and won a cup!
If he doesn’t feel his talent can push up the table then that says alot to me about his own views on his talent! Will just keep looking and find someone younger more hungry and without that massive ego attached to their shoulder!
The media on this story have confirmed what i already knew that you take one statement and apply your own interepation to it depaending on who you support!
Eto says he want inter(league winner, CL) instead of Tottenham who finish mid table,
next you Eto slate Spurs ambition, Eto say spurs aren’t a big club
etc oh and the best of Caught Offside
“Barcelona star turns his nose up at Tottenham and their tepid mid-table mediocrity…”

lads, it is just a PR stunt.
By saying he is rejected a team he has once again put his name in the tabloids for the scouts/boards of chelsea, milan etc to look at.
spurs were never going to agree to pay eto’o £200k per week when king only gets £50k per week.
his ego isn’t right for the squad either. spurs need team players.

Biz - June 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Am there.
bye caught offside - am going home
JimB - June 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Marc - you surely don’t believe that a Spanish speaking coach was the only reason that Dos Santos joined Spurs? There is far more to it than that. Namely that Ramos is not only Spanish speaking but also highly respected; that his teams play the kind of football that would excite a player like Dos Santos; that Spurs are a very wealthy and ambitious club; that the Premiership is on a par with (if not slightly ahead of) La Liga. All those factors are certain to have played a part in Dos Santos’ decision.
I don’t think that rumours about contract negotiations are a justification for booing a young player like that. Even if true, there is nothing wrong with any player taking a tough negotiating stance in order to extract the best deal possible.
Compare and contrast to Spurs fans who have shown Dimitar Berbatov nothing but support despite 18 months of comments from his agent about talks with other clubs.
RayParlourforPresident - June 11th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Eto’o tells the truth about why he doesn’t want to join Spurs and you “don’t want him anyway”
that is childish and pathetic.
at the end of the day Eto’o is one of the best paid players in the world playing for one of the biggest teams in the world
why would he want to join a bunch of deluded mid-table also-rans who have less chance of breaking the top four than Everton and VIlla
Next year is always your year -funny that isn’t it…. same old same old yet never managing it, you are always going to do better than us and there is always some excuse.
competing in a cup that Rangers got to the final of - how the mighty would have fallen had he actually joined and got involved in that debacle
I am all for a little self-belief but honestly, did you really think eto’o would look at a club whose best position in the premiership in the last 5 years is 5th and cling onto the fact they managed to win a mickey mouse cup that only the championship teams bother putting out their senior sides for?
i would like to have the money you will have to spend on players but to be fair you will still probably waste it on players like bent anyway, he is much your sort of level of player

Gavaldinho - June 11th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Funny, I seem to remember seeing about 8 of your regular starting 11 play in the game we thumped you 5-1 in. That team then went on to beat Milan… Are we better than Milan? Of course not. We also beat a FULL strength Chelsea side in the final - a team that have consistantly finished above you in the league in the past few seasons. All of your players want to leave, we have players signing for us that you wanted. Who is really really the better club? You decide! You have won nothing for 3 years, does that make you also rans? You go on about the Champ League, yet you dont stand a chance of winning it, the question is whats the point of you even being there? LOSER!
Bobby - June 11th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Imagine calling yourself Ray Parlour????!!!!
The bra-less Arsenal spaz who liked to install water features with Alan Titchmarsh? Shit, I’m gonna spew in my mash now. And it’s all your fault.
RayParlourforPresident - June 11th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
we actually started the 5-1 drubbing with our reserve team but, you are right there were a few stronger players brought on towards the end, and I am taking nothing away from Spurs, in that game you played better than us, I am also delighted you beat Chelsea, believe it or not I hate them more than Spurs,
right, that is now settled onto the reality check,
“All of your players want to leave” - all of them being Flamini and Hleb I take it, haven’t seen any others running to the door - bearing in mind there is as much chance as you losing Berbatov, Chimbonda, Robinson, that already makes more players than we are going to lose - yes some of those you don’t want to keep however that is your fault for buying them in the first place
Ask yourself this - how many spurs players would make the 1st team at Arsenal??? if the answer isn’t pretty much all of them then you know who the better team is
I would say 1 maybe 2 of them would. On the other side of that fence 80-90% of our 1st team would make it into yours….
“we have players signing for us that you wanted.” -
AND - that happens all the time, Aaron Ramsey was considering a move to Everton - that doesn’t make them a better team than Man U or Arsenal - it is a case of moving to the club that is right for the player or, in chelsea’s case, if they offer the most money
“You go on about the Champ League but don’t stand a chance of winning it” -
I’d say on a percentage basis we have 100% more chance of winning the Champions League than a team who isn’t in it? no? basic common sense there bud.
I genuinely hope you do perform better next season because it is about time you actually achieved the greatness your fans have been promising for decades. Then again - you said we would do shite without Henry…. 3rd as opposed to 11th - how is that an argument?
pretty football boy - June 11th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Ray - Arsenal started the 5-1 thrashing with 3 first choice players. Another came on within 18 minutes of the start. Two more first team players appeared on 60 minutes. Most of the others had made regular appearances in the first team.
Spurs started with 8 first choice players but took 3 of them off with a full 30 minutes remaining.
One other little known fact: Arsenal’s team that night (reserves or not) cost over £10 million more than Spurs’.

What a surprise, Eto says he doesn’t want to join Spurs and all of a sudden out come all the spuds saying ‘we didn’t want him anyway’.
Yeah righto chaps, of course you don’t want a proven goal scorer at every highest level in european football. Embarassed for you, really I am. That’s why you’re the butt of so many jokes from other clubs. D E L U S I O N A L . At least have the humility to admit that prettyn much all PL clubs would love to have Eto, including Man U.
And to add to that some div above says…
‘It seems that all you goon twats can throw back at us is our league position, pathetic’
lol, what else would you have us judge your season then? Granted you won the league cup and won it well but you were shite in the league and that’s the measure of a clubs level of consistency across the whole season.
Still, I’m sure you’ll be great next year, will finish in the top 4 an win the UEFA cup. ha ha ha ha! I think I’ve heard that before somewhere??? was it last season? no, the season before, no hang on, it must have been the season before… etc. etc.

Pat - I think you’ll find that the vast majority of Spurs fans have said that it’s perfectly reasonable for Eto’o to have said that Spurs are not for him at this stage of his career. Just as it is perfectly reasonable for the likes of Hleb and Flamini, at this stage of their careers, to want to join clubs that are likely to win major trophies.
Fair enough?

goonieinfestation (is that a confession of having some form of venereal disease?)
Didn’t Chelsea Change Manager last season and finish 2nd????
wouldn’t that make your point totally irrelevant???
plus the fact I would have thought it is those sorts of excuses that would put “big”names off signing for Spurs in the first place.
I am more than happy to have an adult discussion about this but one suggestion - the more exclamation marks you use, the less impact your argument has, never mind the fact your argument is based on excuses and deluded drivel from a club that has underachieved for the last 5 years.
I say underachieved because you do actually have some decent players, and one day I am sure you will fulfill the potential however assuming that you are going to break the top four (same old same old) purely because you have now got a new manager and some big team misfits joining the club is a little far fetched.
I hope you are better next season though, we could do with the competition, we haven’t seen you as that for a long time.
