Whilst it’s true that Rafa a) has been tracking wingers and b) is keen to add to his English contingent, this latest speculative rumour is surely a little wide of the mark!
The Spaniard is eager to land a new winger during the summer transfer market as he prepares a title challenge for next season, and the man on the top of his wanted list is Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The England international has failed to settle at Stamford Bridge following a £21million move from Manchester City, and Portsmouth have already registered their £10million interest.
However, Benitez will tell the Blues he will pay as much as £15million for the winger, although it would be a huge surprise if the Londoners agreed to sell one of their players to a title rival. (fansfc.com)
I feel sorry for SWP, he has been criminally underused at Stamford Bridge, but then in a way he must have expected something like that would happen when he signed three years ago. Having made an incredible 59 appearances from the bench, I can understand that life must be more than just a little frustrating for the 26-year-old. If he wants to get a good run in Fabio’s England set-up, he will need to be playing more often.
A move to Anfield doesn’t seem that likely to me, Chelsea don’t often sell their players to direct rivals and Rafa is unlikely to shell out such a fee for Wright-Phillips, not when he is already looking at forking out a large sum of money on the likes of Barry and Bentley. It seems more likely that a move back to Eastlands would suit all parties more appropriately.
Do Liverpool fans think that a move for SWP would make sense?
