Liverpool still told to up bid to 20 million for midfielder: is this guy worth it?
by aidy back on June 13th, 2008Aston Villa have yet again decided that Liverpool’s latest bid for their midfield powerhouse is not enough.
Aston Villa have turned down Liverpool’s latest bid to sign midfielder Gareth Barry. The latest offer is reportedly in the region of £15million, but rumours claim Villa boss Martin O’Neill is holding out for a fee of £20million. (Skysports)
Will Liverpool really step up their bid for Barry when it looks as though they will only be getting in the region of £15 for Xabi Alonso? It’s clear that both Gerrard and Benitez want Gareth at the club, but it seems as though Martin O’Neill does not want to let his captain go easily. Perhaps the whole reason this has been dragged out so long is that Aston Villa’s hierarchy are still not happy about the price tag Liverpool put on young stopper Scott Carson.
Do Liverpool fans think that £20m is too much for the 27-year-old?

No way. Clubs are taking advantage of the current unstable climate, financial wise, at Liverpool at the mo. Selling clubs are looking for more and buying clubs are looking to buy for less. This Hicks/Gillette fiasco is having repercussions that will prove very costly to us.
clarko - June 13th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
way too much. he aint worth that much. sorry but we could do a lot better with the money. i wonder if its more a case of raffa finally wisening up and not letting anyone know what he is really up to… PLEASE RAFA, tell me its just a “RED HERRING” and you have your eyes on someone else that you dont want other clubs to know about until you have landed him.
OLIVETTI - June 13th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
WHAT IS MARTIN THINKING ,HE IS GOOD , CAME REALLY GOOD LAST SEASON , PROBALLY RUN FOR ONE MORE , IS 20 MIL WORTH ONE GOOD SEASON AND THE REST ,PRETTY AVERAGE
WHY DONT WE SEE WHAT ESSIENS PRICE IS AND PAY THE DIFFERNCE ,,,WAY BETTER THAN BARRY EVEN ON FORM
LFC18+5 - June 13th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Yes £20 million is to much for Barry who is just a big fish in a small pond at Villa. When Mr O’Neill has put his toys back in his pram, if he can find a box to stand on, maybe he will realise that Barry is no better than the younger Alonso, they just have slightly different qualities. If we told Juventus that we wanted £20 million for Alonso they would move onto another target and I hope Rafa does the same with Barry. We get to keep Alonso and Barry stays at Villa with his adoring fans knowing that he would rather be at Liverpool.

AND MARTIN I MA WITH YOU ON THAT , THE YANKS ARE EATING
AWAY OUR LEGACY ,CURRENTLY ON SCHEDULE TO END UP LIKE LEEDS

If Michael Carrick is valued at over £20 million the Gareth Barry must be worth more.
Darren - June 13th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Id love too to see Barry at the club, but 20m is outrageous. Hes good but never worth that amount. Mascherano didnt cost that and hes younger and much more highly rated across the world than Barry is. If alonso is prepared to stay Rafa should forget about Barry as Alonso is just as good. 15m should be the ceiling price and only if we get the same for Alonso from Juve!
Rowan blades - June 13th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
20m is a joke. Give me Alonso anyday over Barry.
They can keep him and he can remain an average, nearly man for his whole career. He may be more versatile than Alonso, but he is much less of a potential match winner.
However, Rafa know’s a god damn more about football than i do.
We need to buy at least one star name this summer, a well known forward. Our top Target was Amauri and he’s gone, so that leaves Villa, Huntelaar and whoever else is out there of that calibre.
M O’N is sposed to be interested in Crouch, Pennant, Carson and Riise, so why can’t he just take some of those?
I’m sure we are playing skint to ward off high fee’s. However, once all the secondary targets our out of the way, we will buy someone exciting.
razak - June 13th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
20 million??!!!Better keep Alonso at Anfield and use that money to buy a good striker to partner Torres. At least if Torres is injured during the season, we know we can rely on other striker to do the job.
FinancialHypocrit - June 13th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Indeed, Barry is never worth anywhere near 20 million that is absolute horse shit and O´neil is a fucking tool for asking for that much. Grates on me how over priced english players are and how there clubs over value them to such an extent it seems laughable. The truth is though i am praying that Rafa wises up and walks away from this one. I mean please this lads no way near as good as mascherano. at 14 million i was happy but 20 please for the love of god dont be stupid. lets just leave this horse in its stable and let its dumb bastard manager keep it happy. Been grating on me this for a while but i have to admit these one season wonder players are becoming ever more consistent with liverpool, Ferguson would literally laugh at O´neil if quoted that price. Lets concentrate on bring in plessis and improving Lucas ” i mean didnt the boy win the golden boot in brazil” and invest in some half decent wingers and creative forces that can actually turn us into this challenging team. Van der Vaart looks fantastic lets put the 20 million there, plenty of great talent out there that we can scoop for that would cost the region that villa want for barry and that will actually make a difference . FUCK MARTIN….AND HIS STABLE OF AVERAGE OVER PRICED SHITE!
Dale Marlow - June 13th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Rafa should simply say no thanks. I wonder what MON would then do with a disgruntled player clearly deparate to further his career. As a former Forest and ManUre players I suspect there is a little more to this bellyaching from the Villa manager.
ste - June 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
20 million is ridiculous and if rafa is willing to go anything over 12 million for a distinctly average player (who alonso is better and younger than) then he really needs his head seeing to. there arent that many funds, so if liverpool have 20 million to spend, why arent they going out looking at players like quaresma and david silva who we need for the wings.
Bryan - June 13th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
There is a simple answer to that “NO!” As I stated yesterday in the Milner blog, overinflated prices for average players. Keep Alonso.
Mags - June 13th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I saw that Villa might be angry that liverpool have put such a haigh price on Carson, thats why they want alot of money for Barry, but do you think that the reason they want 20 mil, is so that thay can use that money to buy Carson with the high price on his head????
Thusa M - June 13th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
Rafa must just pull out of this shit Villa crap and Barry will force them to let him go for next to nothing. Obviously he has made up his mind and will never be the same player for Villa if they force him to stay. Just stop doing business with an average team mid-table team and save the bucks for an equally decent player if not better. Liverpool must just go for D.Villa and Silva. The defence is sorted with versatile players like Carra and Agger and the new boys.
Bryan - June 13th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
The Carson price was supposedly agreed upon prior to him going out on loan to Villa.
zoe - June 13th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
ridiculous, at that price Essien is a better prospect playing next to Masch in a 4-2-3-1.
reikirebel - June 13th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Juve won’t pay over 15m for alonso …… need we say more????
I hope Rafa does do another Heinze, wait and wait and then be short at the back (last season). rafa talks about moving quickly and I would suggest he needs to walk the walk!!! Call MON bluff and say NO!
This is business and there is no sentiment in business …. find someone else and fast!!!!
King Kong - June 13th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Barry for Alonso? And still have to top up 6 million? I think Villa is doing some PR work to ensure the fans don’t get upset. I think Rafa ain’t stupid and now that Barry sounded he wanted to leave, the price will be much lower than expected. So I urge you not to worry, we are not going to burn the whole transfer kitty on an above average player.
starstarstar - June 13th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Bring in Quaresma if possible, we need a pacy winger and, get a young striker. Just bring in young players if not the squad will getting older time by time!
Never - June 13th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
£20m for Barry?? The world has gone mad, he’s average at best.
Doesn’t score that many goals, no fancy skills or tricks, not a playmaker, no range of long passes, no personality or character on the pitch and isn’t a leader so why would he be worth anywhere near that figure.
He’s a solid but very basic left footed midfielder, that’s it.
Villa are just taking the p*ss with the price cos they’re trying to prove a point of principle in not being forced to sell. If LFC want to force the deal through then Villa are gonna make them suffer financially! And rightly so.
Magnum - June 13th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Forget about the price (crazy as 20mill is). Alonso is simply a better player than Barry. Barry is more versitile but in term of class….no choice between the 2. LFC have played Xabi to deep in recent years and he did suffer with injury last year but he is a class player and a class professional. No problem with Barry, in fact good player, but can’t see the sense in this possible deal

most people on here are looking at this the wrong way.
is gareth barry as a player worth 20million? probably not. but there is a lot more goes into how much a player is worth!
villa are a club that do not really need the money, and are building themselves. they dont want to let their lynchpin go as they have ambitions of their own, the player is under contract so why should they accept a lower figure? if the player wants to leave, he shouldnt have signed a contract. i’m sure randy lerner doesnt care if the player is unhappy, he has to keep up his form anyway if he wants to put himself in the shop window
if liverpool want him, they pay what villa want for him.
to the idiots above who are criticizing martin o’neill, who the fcuk do u think u are? he is villas player, under contract and crucial to the team. he can value him at what he wants
same as rafa asking ridiculous money for crouch
michael - June 13th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
look barry is the same as gerrard except gerrard is better but id like 2 c him at liverpool since barry wants 2 leave M.O.N. should take 15million and shut the fuck up liverpool should get Villa,Quasmara,Silva nd bently aswell den we will av da prem Y.N.W.A.
farz - June 13th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
the yanks are bullshit.i bet lpool would hv been better without them nxt season.they are causing too much disturbance in this team.lets just hope they dont sell TORRES.the yanks are just here to make money,we need people who the team.
Jacob - June 13th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
NO WAY. I WOULD HAVE prefered if we had kept ALONSO. Now Quasmara is the only way we can keep hold of the top fligth….
Maestro - June 13th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Poor old delusional O’Neill. Supposedly we got £14.2M for Xabi. Very sad to see him go. If we paid a penny more than £15M for Barry, I’d be very sad to see him arrive. He’s just not that good. Ffs, we got Torres for £20M and he’s world class!
mighty reds - June 13th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
not in a million years is he worth 20m i would say 10 max o’neill lives in a dream world and he is not good enough to put a liverpool shirt on
Anonymous - June 13th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
a sick joke if barry is so good why has he never being in a premiership team of the season, another over valued english player
zahid - June 13th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
I wouldn’t even pay 15 million for Barry. If we are to pay anything more than that amount i say keep alonso sell crouch, pennant, riise, voronin get some money from the twat owners and go full out and buy David Villa.
The problem with Benitez is that instead of buying one decent player for 20 million he goes out buying multiple crap like milner and downing and co.
Redandproud - June 13th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I thought the point of moving the club forward was primarily by improving the squad so where is the logic in selling Alonso - a world class player - and signing a one footed plodder for way over the odds? I’m fully behind Rafa but I fear he’s lost the plot on this one. Wide players and another 20 goal a season man to partner Torres have to be our priorities.
cam - June 13th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
nearly everyones right y buy a worse player for than we sell alonso so just keep alonso focus on a forward and 2 wingers. david villa, queresma, keep pennant and buy milner. and thats a premiership side (maybe get a good right insted of degen)
DAVEPEZ1 - June 13th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
the arrogance of Liverpool fans amazes me! Villa DONT NEED THE MONEY! we have a player who is UNDER CONTRACT who we DONT WANT TO SELL and DONT NEED TO SELL! you talk like your doing us a favour by taking him off our hands at such a generous price. its hilarious! he leaves on our terms, simple as that! Its sad that your club has to go to such lengths to keep Sir Stevie happy! Personally, i`ll be glad to see the back of Barry. This whole episode is just getting boring now! JUST PAY UP THE £20MILLION or SHIP OUT!
marty - June 13th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
forget about him. buy alot better with that money
LFC - June 14th, 2008 at 12:50 am
It seems a lot of money, and money we don’t seem to have unless we sell. How good is that
Brendan - June 14th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Liverpool are not entitled to buy a player just because they want him. Aston Villa do not want to sell Barry, and they do not have to sell Barry. He is Villa’s player and he is under contract.
So if someone comes along looking to buy a player that Villa (or any other team) does not want to sell, then it is obvious (to anyone with half a brain) that the buyer will have to pay through the nose for that player.
Martin O’Neil is in effect saying, ‘I don’t want to sell Barry, but if you really want him you will have to pay 20 mil, end of story’.
So LFC need to either pay up 20 mil or simply say “No thanks” and go way. LFC should stop trying to haggle as if they are at a market stall.
Put the 20 mil cash on the table or just walk away. Either way Villa will be happy.
