Arsenal in chase for Akinbiyi in disguise?

Watching the Euros without England is a bit like Big Brother winner Kate Lawler – not much to get excited about yet you wish you were involved…

Instead of beer-induced rants about who plays on the left or who to drop, we’re acting like scouts for our beloved Premier League teams. But what The Daily Mail quite possibly sees in Bafetimbo Gomis is beyond me. It suggests Arsenal are ready to move for the French flop.

If anyone has had the displeasure of watching France at the Euros, then you will now be all-too-familiar with Gomis. Granted, he has had a good season with St. Etienne, but his woeful performances off the bench for Les Bleus have been embarassing. Remember Ade Akinbiyi? Gomis is a bit like him. But Arsene Wenger has a habit of making even the most obscure ‘talent’ into a force to be reckoned with.

Nobody knew who Emmanuel Adebayor was, Thierry Henry was bought as a winger, and Robin Van Persie was relatively unknown too. Add to that the business of selling Nicolas Anelka to Real for £23m and signing Patrick Vieira for around £4m, Wenger (Francis Jeffers apart) knows his stuff.

So if Gomis comes to the Emirates and sets the Premiership alight, fair play. But surely Arsenal (and indeed the rest of Europe) should be focussing on Wesley Sneijder, David Villa or reigniting their chase for Obafemi Martins. Are Gooner fans tired of seeing obscure talent? Do you want a big name summer signing?
