100 better ways for Liverpool manager to spend £20m: Part 1
by Luke Eldridge on June 19th, 2008The poor agents involved in trying to get Liverpool and Aston Villa to agree over a fee for Gareth Barry look like they have as difficult a job as the RT Hon Tony Blair, now envoy for the Middle East. Whilst Rafa Benitez wastes half his summer trying to secure the services of Barry, other potential targets are quickly disappearing out of sight.
Sporting Lisbon star and Portuguese Euro 2008 squad member Miguel Veloso has made no secret of his desire to move on this summer, stating “England may be a good destination”. Veloso is a cultured midfielder with that little bit of bite needed in the Premiership. Whilst most of England’s top teams have had a sniff at some point in the last year or so, AC Milan now look to be at the head of the queue.
“Milan are keen to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, according to the player’s agent. He has been linked with a string of leading European clubs, with Milan now weighing up a big-money bid for the 22-year-old.”
Veloso has a release-fee of €30m (£24m), but Sporting are willing to negotiate. He would certainly look good in a Milan team for the future with Kaká and Alexandre Pato. But are Liverpool fans looking for a hot prospect for the future, a household name from England or a continental star? Man Utd have been long-time admirers, but will they seriously consider spending big on another central midfielder after Hargreaves and Carrick?

I’ve heard a malicious rumour, from different surces that we’ve decided to fuck off barry and go after a player from a not so good London side. My sources are usually correct when it comes to agents and their intentions but all I can say is God please no, not J**** fuckin B…
Whatch this space, and make of it what you will…
I think I’m gonna cry

It will be a waste to spend 20 Million on Barry, i’d rather Buy Diego or Moutinho for that money, but my 1st choice would be to keep alonso and buy David Villa.
Sachin - June 19th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Barry is by no means worth 20 Million. I say Rafa should go for Diego or Diarra, now these guys are way better and not to mension younger.
Red - June 19th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
All thesse people who say keep Alonso and buy Villa? If you don’t sell Alonso, where will you get the money to buy Villa? Isn’t it logical?
Anonymous - June 19th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I hope that isn’t jimmy Bullard your fuckin talking about, if it is that is a poor decision by Rafa to sell Alonso and replace him with that!!
NICK BROWN - June 19th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Did you see Alonso playing for Spain last night? What the Hell are we doing selling a player of such ability?
It breaks my heart to see us associated with such pondlife and flotsom as Milner/Degen/Dossena, none of whom can get a game with their national side.
37 years I have been screaming for Liverpool - never have I felt so disheartened as now. I curse the day we sold up to Hicks & Gillette - they have brought ruination and shame raining down on our heads. We are screwed.

I cant remember the last time there was a continental manager that was less ambitious than RAFA when it comes to trying to sign players. The excuse of RAFA not having money is crap as he has had alot over the years yet outside of agger , skrtel, babel, reina, masc, torres, alonso and maybe one or two other debatable ones , the rest of the players he has signed are mid table quality. The main problem being that RAFA apparently seems to get turned on by signing only central mids and defenders. We havent had a proper player that can run at defences and open them up since Mcmanaman , why the hell when our biggest weakness is on the wings is he more concerend with splashing out big on yet MORE centre mids and defenders yet too disinterested to address the wing problem. If we need to spend £15 m anywhere its on a world class winger , all other positions we have just about enough 2 get us thru.. but NO, when spurs , man city are tying up world stars Benitez aspirations is fuc king Milner,an unproven at european pedigree level Barry & Bentley. Man U , Chelski & Arsenal are quaking in their boots with fear realising these 3 players will take Man U apart and take their prem title oh yes… good work RAFA you are truely serious about winning the title after 5 years of trying and over £100 m spent , but as you say, you havent had funds 2 compete.
NICK BROWN - June 19th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Rafa is suspicious of true talent. He wants all the kudos for himself. He doesn’t want great players winning games for Liverpool. He wants the credit to go to himself
RafAThe Red - June 19th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
What are you people talking about?
You’re slating our manager on pure speculation!
Samsagoona - June 19th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Loool Turning on your own manger alredy !! AHAHAHAHA!! GOOOOOOOOOOOONA GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONA!!
Gary - June 19th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
We wil neva win da title unda rafa…..hes more concerned about quantity not quality…..he wud rather have 4 mid table than having 1 or 2 Prem winning players….New owners and new manager is the answer….
Ben - June 19th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Keep alonso and buy vlla and downing would be the best idea! but barry would still be good not for the money they are asking though.
Jimmi - June 19th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Red, I don’t think we’re selling Xabi for the transfer money since any decent replacement we’re likely to get for him will cost as much if not more. I think the bulk of theVilla money is supposed to come from the sales of Crouch, Carson, Voronin and perhaps Pennant and Finnan.
misha - June 20th, 2008 at 8:45 am
moronic plastic fans! how dare you associated yourself with LIVERPOOL with your arse-wipe speculations?
