Liverpool firmly in hunt for £20million Spanish star
by stresster on June 20th, 2008There has obviously been loads of speculation with regard to who Liverpool will or won’t be signing this summer. Most of this is hogwash, designed to sell newspapers to speculation-hungry punters, although the prospect of Valencia midfielder David Silva arriving at the club seems very real.
None other than The Guardian report that Pool fans might actually get to witness a class act in a wide position next season, with Rafael Benitez firmly in the hunt for the player, who is thought to be available at the princely sum of £20million.
Not exactly small change for a club who need to watch the pennies this summer. Does this mean that players such as Xabi Alonso, Peter Crouch and Scott Carson need to be sold for some decent cash if Benitez is to land his man? John Arne Riise has already pocketed the club a few million but they need more!
We're giving you £10 FREE so show some bollocks and BET NOW!

Quality signing now alls we need is to either keep Alonso or get Barry dont make to much difference and then we need a substitute right winger for kuyt hence the targeting of Milner, then we need a substitute for Silva which shows why Rafa is targetting Riera and then some more back up for Torres although Babel will be moved up front next season we still need more as both Voronin and Crouch will be leaving. This is obviously why Olic is a target.
This leaves us with a great squad that should see us challenge next season.
Reina(SUB)
Arbeloa (Degen) Carra(Skrtle) Agger(Hyypia) Dossena(Aurelio)
Masch(Plessis) Alonso or Barry(Lucas)
Kuyt(Milner) Gerrard(Benayoun) Silva(Reira)
Torres(Olic and Babel)

N4BZ - June 20th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
If rafa doesn’[t concentrate on Barry and Bentley who are average players then money will be left and could be put to invest in high profiled players like silva, villa and quaresma. We should keep Alonso he is the best passer in Europe and Barry will only be able to match that!¬ We need more wind=gers who have more width and silva can offer that. LFC ALL THE WAY!

Interesting points raised by Dave Sawyer, perhaps you would like to elaborate?
Michael - June 20th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
I’d have to agree with Dave Sawyer, but i’m not sure what the target of his outburst was. Getting back this matter, Silva is quality and the type of player Rafa likes; quick and skilful, but strong and doesn’t go down too easy. I can’t see Rafa paying £20 million though, maybe £15. I’d like Sergio Garcia on the right, Kuyt is a squad player.
Dave Sawyer - June 20th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
I tell them Liverpool have money. I tell them that Tommy Hicksovich has discover gold mine in back garden. They say my comment is being moderated. I write dirty filths. They no moderate. What a state of affairs! These bollock heads
Dave Sawyer - June 20th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Kuyt is Man of the Euro 2008. He should be sold for £30m
elninoT9 - June 20th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
michael i hav to disagree with ur point about garcia. watched him play for spain tha other night and altho he was seein a lot of the ball he jus wasn doin much with it it. alryt maybe its because he wasnt under any pressue becos they had already qualified but still didnt look gd enough, and for me kuyt has really showed wat he can do on the wing.
finally silva - June 20th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
At last Silva! Just watching him play for Spain and linking up with Torres is reason enough to sign him. Flair, technique, work rate (doubling up in defense -Rafa loves that), composure, ability to hold off strong oppositions (adaptability to BPL), unselfish plays and mesmerising runs into channels or delivery of quality crosses… and the list goes on. It’s too early to say but he could be the real deal for No. 7 just like how Torres has made No. 9 his own. Please, Rafa, Hicks, Gillett, DIC, whoever, make it happen! 18million for Barry? Puhlease… 20 million looks like a steal for Silva then (and Rafa can thrash out an even better deal!)
SHAHIEM KHAN - June 20th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
so much speculation but no true facts.my personel oppinion is that liverpool dont need all those players who being linked to us.why barry because his english?seems to be the only logical explanation the players we have now is fantastic only need to work together.why sell pennant and crouch brilliant players only need game time they are english.pennant better than milner javier maccarano better than barry crouch knows english football maybe a world class defender would do the trick but we dont lack much we scored more goals than any other club in england lost less games than united what players do you need nothing

This is bullcrap! we do have money FFS! you must believe everything you hear in the media. we do have money trust me. we are getting £20 million from the owners. and fromk selling players we will have enough money. so please stop playing this annoying tune of ‘we have no money’ and yes david silva will be quality.

Silva is class. It’s as simple as that. Do we have enough money? who knows? Only Rafa and the American Cunts.
Red - June 20th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Liverpool will always have the money. The owners have stated on numerous occasions that they will listen to Rafa if he approaches them with a target who can be of great benefit to the club. David Silva would be of great benefit to the club, an attacking player who can get wide or cut in and support the striker.
LFCg - June 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
much better than bentley, lol @ milner..dont wanna even compare him.
good signing, worth 20mil maybe knock da price down a few mil, sayin again wont b that easy.we need world class players..silva is WORLD CLASS!!!!
live 4 LFC - June 20th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
we dont need any more defenders, the reason y last season went from a great start 2 so much draws was because agger got injuried and when skrtel came in, things started 2 get better bt it was too late, all we need is a wide man and a extra striker so rafa can rotate torres and dont get axe for it
david silva no barry - June 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
yeah..i like it..buy me benitez… im the only guy tht can solve your problems.. i’m mile better than riera,milner,bentley,valencia..i hv pace, flair, silky pass, highly workrate n i can score too..btw…im just 23yrs old…….dont waste liverpoolfc money for 27 yrs old barry because he’s english.. don’t get me wrong..he’s really good, combative plyer..but wht liverpoolfc needs just wide man like me…adios benitez

SELL GERRARD AND BUY SILVA.. i have been saying this for ages. Gerrard is old and Alonso can take his place, as we saw alonso can play the attcking role and his passing is better than Gerrards. Sell gerrard to inter milan and see if can get about 40mill for him, then give that amount to valencia for both silva and villa. simple….
Alex - June 20th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Sell Gerrard? lol. he’s the heartbeat. Been in team of the season for last 5 seasons in a row. The best cm in the world, plays anywhere in midfield and is the club captain. How could you even suggest it.
Ben - June 20th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
The enemy within is an understatement! No way is stevie G worse than alonso…. gerrad any day. silva would be a quality signing and i think 20 mil is a bargain for a player of his calibre

tank - June 20th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Look my name suggests that i am a liverpool fan living within man u ones. Now to back up what i saidin the sense that gerrard should possibly be sold. dalglish, souness, hughes, hunt, beardsley. keegan to name but a few, WERE THE HEART BEATS OF THEIR LIVERPOOL SIDE. alex things move on, as a true liverpool fan you should know that NO ONE PLAYER makes LIVERPOOL. Manure, i do think gerrard is a great player but we really have been over dependent on him in the last few seasons because we just haven’t had great players. Lets look at the fact gerrards nearly 29, and even though i love the guy i do think we can get a good price for him now, and buy someone like diego, (thats if alonso wants to leave). from werder brenan. WE NEED to improve and if that means seeling gerrard for villa and silva then yes i would do it.
oh and greyosh7, pennent over bentley/ milner just proves to me you know nothing about football mate. come on, i saw pennant play ONE GOOD GAME all season. Bentley is up and coming and has p[layed some cracking games, and milner IS ONLY 22… this guy will be very very good in years to come.
billy the bat - June 20th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
look people i can’t seriously believe people are saying sell Gerrard are people mad?, enemy within/tank or whatever your name is.. what are you talking about, as someone said gerrard is the heart beat of liverpool, and he’s 28???? why would you sell him, the guy turned down chelsea at the time when they were champions, he would of got a massive salary increase, and who knows what he would have won. but he stayed because liverpool ran thru his veins. Liverpool shouldn’t forget those things or us fans. torres has declared that he wants to stay at liverpool even though chelsea want him, plus i heard that when he left Madrid he took a pay cut to come to us. now thats the type of player i want to play for my team. i don’t know how you guys feel bbut when the likes of quaresma, bentley etc are connected to liverpool i get really angry. I WANT PLAYERS THAT WILL PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL AND GIVE THERE ALL. thats what i want as a fan. mascherano last season against man u was so passionate when he got sent off. i want people that will go the extra mile. unlike others who ask for transfers from teams that made them what happened to loyalty, ( i hate man united but what ronaldo has done to them makes me sick. if i were a man u fan i would never want to see him in one our shirts.). i want to see the likes of silva and villa play for liverpool but only if they know what it means.

finally silva - June 21st, 2008 at 5:38 am
LIVERPOOL has always been about passion and turning seemingly ordinary players into Kop legends. No one knew King Kenny would wow Anfield when he seemed and unlikely replacement for Keegan. We don’t need a team of galacticos, we need players who are willing, who breathe and bleed for Liverpool. Torres said last season that he told his agent to only listen to offer from Liverpool and that translates into his majestic performances on the pitch. same goes for monster Mascherano who said during the period of uncertainty that he would never play for another English club. look at the spine of the team: Carragher, Gerrard, Mascherano, Torres what do they have in common? they are world class players and they have Liverpool in their blood. For heaven’s sake, Gerrard (for that matter Carragher) deserves a BPL title for his contribution and the pivotal moments he made happened for the club. FA Cup last ditch strike, strike against Olympiakos en route to magic at Istanbul… for sentimental reasons and for love of the club, I can’t imagine Liverpool without Gerrard. he’s getting older but he is devouring space and pummeling shots and passes like he was 20. surely he has a few good years ahead of him. what’s more? Torres loves him. this splendid partnership will only blossom for as long as Gerrard is around. Throw in Silva and the picture is almost complete.

hey tank, ur misquoting me, all i meant was having pennant is as good as having bentley or milner. hate it or love it pal they r both playin close to their best n that’s not good enuf 4 lfc. pennant has shown more potential, he get past his man better, maybe milner’s got lil more pace but bentley is too slow 4 me, we need speedy wingers with great vision, silva answers that.
StevieGerrard - June 21st, 2008 at 9:38 am
billy the prat and enemy within/tank shut up you absolute morons. You say its all about money and there may be a certain truth to this but with Gerrard, as the whole Chelski thing showed, is not the be all and end all. Sell Gerrard, are you bloody stupid or just plain ignorant? I ask because since Gerrard took his place in the First team Liverpool FC haven’t looked back once. He will be at this great club for th rest of his career and this will not change with any amount of money. So you as Billy the bat if he is smoking something I must put the same question to you because no true reds fan ever wants Gerrard to be sold so grow up idiots

tank/enemy within why don’t you just support chelsea/ man u. if money is that important and winning things. i’ve supported liverpool since i can remember barnes playing on the wing, with houghton and beardsley, rush, hansen. nicol, ablett, grobbelarr, staunton, burrows, aldridge, Hysen, rosenthal, players that gave there all. man i just want that again and as finally silva said liverpool have a great spine of die hard players. i would add kuyt/ agger. kuyt plays as i would if i played for liverpool.. with my heart on my sleeve. THE LEAGUE WILL BE OURS SOON……….IN RAFA WE TRUST.

Completely agree with finally silva. Without players like Carragher, Gerrard and Torres Liverpool would be exactly like Man Utd or Chelsea. I think if we want to win a title we need more class players such as silva who will play for the club and not for the money. As for David Villa, can someone please post a starting line up in which he would start and not rot ont the bench as a back-up for Torres. And can someone else also post why the hell are we tryin’ to sign all these average English players? Make no mistake, I love these english players but all this crap about them not playing to their full potential yet is stupid cuz by the time they are at their full potential, people like Gerrard and Carragher will be retired. I know people will say “but then we will have a base for a new team” but we won’t cuz they won’t be Liverpool through and through like Gerrard. Finally I wouldn’t sell Gerrard even if I had to eat a bowl of snot. Next year I hope Liverpool will win the title although it may take a year or two for the team to gel but at least we will have strenghth and depth to mount a serious title challenge

finally silva beeing linked .. i rekon this guy is a class act . it would be great if he does decide to hoin us .. and if we can afford him. as for all of your guys sayin that we should keep alonso.look at it this way. . if he is going so well at the euros we may be able to sell him for a much higher price that way we can afford these signings thatg we are after. yes he is a great player but we do have a overload of centre midfielders and i think letting him go mite note be so bad. any thoughts ??
FC REDSTAR - June 21st, 2008 at 10:57 am
I have been on here before somewhere albeit i can not find the post now, saying something similiar. lfc do not have the money to splash on £20m players full stop. we have ownership to get sorted circa £500m the royal bank of scotland are our real owners, it is their money which has taken control of us. we have the new ground to sort out circa £500m plus. thats a cool £1 BILLION ! thus forget about the odd £20m here and there it simply aint going to happen. thus Rafa should continue what he is doing with our reserves and yonugsters keep acquiring future talent whilst cost effectively strengthening the first team.
probable starting teams next year

I think we can afford Silva (pre-allocated budget) & Barry (Alonso sales offsetting the cost), then with the conservative sales of Pennant (5m), Crouch (10m), Carson (5m), Finnan (1m) we could easily afford another quality right winger (lets say player X). But even if we didnt we would still have great depth and versitility. And perhaps spend the extra money on player Y being a striker rather than the right winger instead.
Barry would be give us better balance in the pitch as he can control the left side of the pitch very well, goes forward well, can play left back, left midfield or in the middle and seldom loses the ball. He has a good shot/set pieces too.
For example the below without even considering change in formation and that SG could do a job at right back (but of course we would be desperate to have to do that)
Reina
Arbelo(Deggen) Agger(Skertl) (Hyppia)Carra Dossena(Aurelio)
Masc (plessis) Barry (Leiva)
X (Silva/Babel/SG/Beni/kuyt) Babel/silva/beni/Barry
SG(Silva/Beni)
Torres/Babel/Kuyt/Voronin/Y
AS you can see even without X on the wing we have lots of options, although it is better imho to allow a player to settle in one particular position.

fc redstar: hav you lost the plot. im sorry but selling voronin for 4m is just a dream. kewell is alredy been released. you wanna get simunic and sell arbeloa ?? simunic is turnin 31 this year and arbeloa 25. btw i dont think arbeloa played that beadly last year .. i actually think he was one of out more consistent performers. as for srna .. i actually agree with that. only if we cant afford david silva, srna is a very good winger that is quite competent at whippin in a great ball from the wing and is also a fabulous free kick taker. the turkish guy you talk of i cant really comment becoz i havnt seen to much of him though. im sorry to tell you though that in my opinion liverpool at this moment in time doesnt have enuf time to try to develop youth talents into regular first team players. the way the americans are runnin the club if rafa doesnt win the premier league nxt year i find it hard to believe that he will be their. thats why i think he is and should be tryin to find those 2 or 3 star recruitments.
finally silva - June 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 am
it’s worrying if we don’t secure a world class player of our own (in Silva) because Juande Ramos clearly thinks he can do another Sevilla by turning Tottenham into a club that can give the top4 a run for their money. just look at Modric and he probably isn’t done yet. Scolari has 100million at his disposal and mancs can go on a spending spree with 60million from ronaldo. Arsenal could get Arshavin and Arsene Wenger poached a young star in Ramsey. That’s why we need Silva (not another “could be something” player like milner or riera). bentley is proven but he’s just thinking of using Liverpool as a stepping stone to establish himself in the England squad. Silva plays because he loves to. With Eduardo Macia, Torres and the Spaniards contingent at Liverpool, he will be a player that justifies his price tag for years to come. unlike some “top-scorer” who was patiently groomed by Sir AF and when he’s finally proven to be something he turns his ass on the club.
I agree with anonymous that Kuyt and Agger (sadly ridden with injuries last season) could also become the spine of the team. sorry i was obsessed with the mighty 4. Kuyt has the drive and he’s showing glimpses of class as a winger. and Agger chose Liverpool when he could have been poached by other money sacks.
Like people said in the other thread, we can only believe this piece of delightful news when Rafa and the player (SILVA) pose for the camera with their hands on the legendary “This is Anfield” sign. Anyhow, I’m living out this fantasy on FM (bought Silva for 51mil so what’s 20? i know the yanks are cash-strapped misers) and Torres scored 4 in a friendly (:
my two cents’ worth on the priorities of signing: 1) Silva 2) Barry 3) Villa (though i doubt he’ll leave Valencia at all)
