As Mark Hughes looks to put his stamp on his Eastlands squad will he win his race for a top quality Liverpool midfielder?

Manchester City are ready to fight Portsmouth for Liverpool winger Yossi Benayoun as Mark Hughes steps up his rebuilding plans at Eastlands.

Israel international Benayoun is determined to stay and fight for his place at Anfield, but Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keen to cash in on the player he only signed from West Ham last year. (Manchester Evening News)

In many ways this could be a blessing in disguise for all parties. Rafa Benitez wants funds for new additions to his squad and whilst Yossi had a good season at Anfield he will probably find it very hard indeed to claim a regular starting spot so a move to a rejuvenated City, mostly down to Sven’s work last season, could work well for the former West Ham man also. Benayoun is reportedly available for a fair price of around £7m so it could be a deal that may well be hard to refuse on all sides. Do City fans think that Benayoun could offer a great deal to their midfield and will Liverpool fans miss the Israeli if he did leave?
