Liverpool boss Benitez switches to new £10million winger target

Now that he has successfully severed ties with footballing leech Hara-Kiri Kewell, Liverpool gaffer Rafa B is apparently after someone to fill his lazy antipodean loafing boots.
The Sun, the UK’s finest purveyors of wanton doggerel and tripe, reckon that Rafa the gaffer is set to have a little splurge on Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing, conveniently ignoring the fact that Downing silenced any transfer rumours last season by signing a contract extension for his boyhood club.
LIVERPOOL are making a shock £10million swoop to land Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing.
Kop boss Rafa Benitez wants a left-sided midfielder following Harry Kewell’s departure and has targeted England star Downing. (The Sun)
So it looks like this story could be a bit of a non-starter, what with Downing signing a new contract pretty recently, but the fact that he is only 23, and would no doubt be an improvement on injury collector Harry Kewell, must make him a tempting prospect for Rafa.

If Middlesborough are going to give us £10million to take Downing off their hands, I’d say that’s reasonable. Although I’d probably ask for £15m.

I just have to comment, because this is the first ever caughtoffside article that hasn’t ended with “Liverpool fans what do you think?” Because that sentence always derails my train of thought, and even if I did have valid comments, they get blown away with “Well, I think you should stop fishing for comments…” when I read that sentence.
So bravo! But Downing can get lost, half the media have us buying only Spanish players, while the other half have Rafa buying up half the England squad! Yes what have we got so far? i think rafa is stupid. he wants to win the title but plans to spend money on mediocre players. sell voronin, crouch, etc. quickly to buy some better players. look beyond mediocre players please. lots of links with world class players, but the club is extremely slow in signing them. if liverpool are slow, they will end up in failure again. psychological tactics could not make mediocre players do their job better. all will be the same. they have proved themselves already that they are mediocre. rafa should move fast!

Stewart Downing is a decent player in a very average side. He catches the eye when doing the unexpected but I suspect he will be found wanting when expected to fulfill a specific task week in week out. I would prefer to make do with what we have until finances improve instead of launching a NEW challenge for the title with inadequate new talent.

i have been a liverpool fan for more than ten years. what i can see is that hicks and gillets cannot expect much from rafa because they both donot want to spend money on big name players yet want the title. it is absolutely nonsesical. i even think that both yankees donot understand english football. liverpool under idiotic hicks and gillets keep signing only mediocre players but make an annual big statement that they will win the title nonetheless. i cannot see how that would be possible!

Well it looks like we’re stuck with him again so let’s see who Rafa buys and if we make a serious challenge next season. Why would a Liverpool fan go and support Chelsea?! That’s ridiculous talk from Rafa’s goatee - however, Rafa had better prove his worth and quick.

I wish you lot would stop bickering and talk sense! Rafa will have plenty of money to spend this summer. Not as much as Chelsea and United mind you….but who will? The Yanks will give him at least £20m, then there’s the money from selling Riise (£4m), Crouch (£11m), Finnan (£1.5m), Itandje (£2m) and Alonso (£15m) - plus saving £70k a week on Kewell - so we’ve got a pot of over £50m! That’s quite enough to buy Barry, Keane and a decent winger. Stop worrying you lot, Rafa will get it right. Just keep the faith!
PS: Didn’t you lot learn how to use capital letters and punctuation when you went to school?
