Agger raring to go: Will return of Liverpool defender make the difference?
by Jon on July 1st, 2008After injury ruled him out of the vast majority of last season, Liverpool’s Danish centre-half is back in training and no doubt raring to go. But will the return to fitness of Liverpool’s cultured defender really matter now Liverpool have Martin Skrtel?
The 2007/08 season started promisingly for Agger (23), with the young viking scoring two goals in four games, including a tasty left-footed finish against Hong Kong outfit South China AA in pre-season.
However, he suffered a metatarsal injury in September, which kept him in the treatment room until after Christmas. In January 2008, Agger began training and was on the verge of regaining fitness when a heart-wrenching recurrence of the injury in his 2nd metatarsal ruled him out of action once again.
Agger promptly underwent surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Now back in training, Agger (who in his spare time fancies himself as a bit of a tattoo artist apparently!) will no doubt be eager to re-establish himself as in Rafa Benitez’s first-team plans. However, this might not be so easy, what with Martin Skrtel having impressed in central defence since joining the club in January on a four-and-a-half year contract.
Skrtel impressed alongside Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypiä, who covered for Agger for most of the season. The Finnish defender did so well that Benitez has kept him at Anfield for another season, well aware that the former captain is still capable of performing at the highest level.
Agger will have to show plenty of the skill and determination that made him such a firm favourite with the fans during the 2006/07 season.
It’s not just Liverpool who are counting on the return to form of Daniel Agger.
“We’ve got vital World Cup-qualifiiers coming up and we need Daniel ready for the national team,” Denmark coach Morton Olsen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.
It’s clear that with the return to fitness of Agger, the departure of own-goal specialist John Arne Riise, and the acquisition of Dossena and Philipp Degen, Liverpool’s defence will have a new (and hopefully commanding) look this coming season.
Who do Liverpool fans think Benitez will start the season with in defence? Agger and Carragher in middle with Fabio Aurelio and Alavaro Arbelola at left and right-back? Or will Skrtel keep Agger out of the squad? Then again, will Rafa wind Carragher up and dump him in the right-back slot, and hand the left-back position to new boy Andreas Dossena?

I hate to say it but I think Carra is not necessarily in our top 2 centre backs - Agger is more cultured and Skrtel is faster - these two are clearly the long term partnership as it stands - that said Carra is a legend and has the leadership the other two dont - Until other signings are confirmed I would be interested to see this team in preseason
Reina
Degen - Skrtel - Agger - Dossena
Mashcerano
Gerrard
Kuyt Babel
Nemeth
Torres

I have a belief that Liverpool fans are the biggest cock heads on the planet. DO you all agree?

I think Carragher, Agger, and Skrtel are are best 3 defenders (with Hyypia coming in close). I think an Agger/Hyypia/Skrtel combo in central defense looks likely with Carragher in the right back slot. It seems a shame to keep him in central defense because he crosses so well!
What about Agger in the left back slot. Is that even a possibility?

@YNWA
Good comment! My heart puts Carra on the team sheet everytime, but he did look half a yard short of pace at times last season. He IS a brilliant defender and I do think he was right to quit international football. It will give Liverpool more in the long run. But I can really see Skrtel and Agger pushing him down the pecking order IF they stay fit and in form.
Carra’s proved over the last five years that you can’t keep him out of the side so I’m sure he’s up for the fight. I prefer him centre than right-back.
@Ryan
In many ways Sami is a great role model for Carra. A model pro who proved last season just how important he is. The away game at Arsenal at the end of the prem season he was brilliant.

Why is Riise an own goal specialist? Hyypia scored just as many own goals last season and one of them in the Merseyside derby. I remember a few seasons back Carra scored 2 own goals in one game against Man Utd and we lost the match 3-2. Give Riise a break. He did a lot of good for our club. To be honest, I would like to see Gerrard and Lucas swapping roles between centre mid and that position just behind Torres, as they have very similar styles of play. Why are people so insistant on having Carra on the right and one of our current players on the left. We have already got Degen in and are finalizing the deal with Dossena. They have been brought in to play right and left full back respectively.

I’ll prefer it like this:
Arbeloa - Agger - Skrtel - Dossena
Caragher just keep passing the balls to the keeper, he almost never knows what to do with the ball, he can’t dribble, he can’t take the ball marvelously out of his own half like Skrtel or Agger, both of them have pace, technique, and move forward so beautifully and come back when needed, Cara is just a lazy one staying in his own half.. How many goals have likes of Gallas/Terry/Ferdinand/O’shea/Vidic scored for their team…LOADs!! and Caragher.. NONE!!! we need surprise goalscorers in the team to beat big teams..we need defenders who can take their chance at corners or freekicks and score.. thats the only difference between us and ManUre..just look at the goalscorers from our opponents who scored against us in the past few years and you’ll see the reality.
As for Dossena, he is a superb acquisition and should go right in the left spot without rotation, Arbeloa is still much better than finnan{well noone can really sent crosses like finnan of course} but Arbeloa have not let us concede any goal from the right side last season, so why despatch him??
Dom - July 2nd, 2008 at 8:29 am
Cara at right back
Skrtel and Agger in the middle
Dossena on the left.
Simple as that!

hey criticalmind, Q. When Kalou crossed in for Riise’s own goal, which right back had let him get past quite easily to get the cross in? A. Arbeloa. And your views on Carragher were crap too. Carragher plays well at right back, With Agger and Skrtel in the centre, as long as Dossena is a good left back, problem solved. However, if he’s no better than Aurelio, we still have a weakness. Nicky Shorey would be a not-too-expensive solution. Come on Rafa, get your thinking cap on. Oh we ain’t got a barrel of money…
