Newcastle clinch £9m Argentine: Pompey and Spurs miss out
by jakepjohnson on July 2nd, 2008Kevin Keegan has made his first move of the summer, as Newcastle United announced they have completed the signing of an Argentine winger.
Jonas Gutierrez has sealed a switch to St James’ Park from Spanish side Real Mallorca on a five-year-deal. The 24-year-old, who helped Mallorca to UEFA Cup qualification last season, has signed for an undisclosed fee, although this is thought to be around £9million.
Gutierrez was being tracked by a host of English clubs, including Tottenham and Portsmouth, but Keegan beat them to the punch, telling the Magpies official website:
Jonas is a wonderful signing for us. I know a lot of other clubs have been interested in him. He’ll be a terrific addition to the squad.
He’s an exciting player and I’m sure our fans will enjoy watching him.
The Argentine international, who made his debut against France in 2007, could not hide his delight as he spoke about the move:
I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining Newcastle United.
The Premier League is a great place to play and I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and prove myself to the Newcastle United fans.
Are Newcastle fans as overjoyed as Keegan and Gutierrez about his arrival? He did help an unfancied Mallorca side to seventh in La Liga, can he do the same at Newcastle?

Good signing for the Toon. Can’t believe they pulled this off without anyone knowing. We’ve been linked with over 200 players since the last season ended and he wasn’t ever mentioned.
Good to see Newcastle doing business behind closed doors for a change.
Mart - July 2nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
His not that good. Glad newcastle signed him instead of spurs. A waste of money at 9 million, thats probably why we didnt sign him. Any one who has seen him play will agree. We want Chapel!
Anonymous - July 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
LOL! because spurs never waste money…
JimB - July 2nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Utter crap. Spurs didn’t miss out. The wingers Spurs want are David Bentley and Diego Capel. If Jonas was even on Spurs’ list, he was well down the pecking order.
yiddo4ever - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Well done Newcastle, hope he proves a good signing. Be good for clubs like us to start challenging the ‘top four’ and then we can start poaching thier players!!
Am expecting many more signings from Keegan and Ramos!!
spurfect one - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
i’ve seen gutierrez play loads of times trust me he aint all that would rather have capel all day long.
Ageordiedoonsooth - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Spurs whingers we beat them to a very good player & they can’t take it I would rather pay euros10m for him that £15m for Bentley
JP - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Some very jelous Spurs fans around here. TBH I don’t even know who the guy is but already some Spurs fans are saying that Newcastle have wasted money and that Spurs go after better players. What is it with you Spurs fans? What have Newcastle done against you guys? We as fans have never had any conflicts until recently Spurs fans starded picking on us. I personally hold no grudge against Tottenham nor their fans and I am glad to see your club rise higher up the league but this battle against Newcastle is getting carried away.
stoney - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Absolute bollox. Ramos can spot a decent player, and would never be after that useless plank. Unlike Keegan, who couldn’t spot a decent player even if you dressed the bloke in a bright yellow tracksuit and hung a flashing neon sign over his head saying ‘DECENT PLAYER’.
azza - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm
pmsl i love it just love it ,spurs miss out on a player and guess what hes crap hehe i think spurs fans need another reality check , top 4 man utd chelsea liverpool arsenal ,
dave - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:39 pm
were we ever even linked to the lad, cus personnaly iv never once heard his named mentioned around spurs talk?
Chris - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Some of you Spurs fans are really proving how much you’s know about football. You’ve turned this into some kind of signing competition. The ones that are saying he’s crap probably have never seen him play, and even if Ramos doesn’t rate him Redknapp certainly does and he can spot a good player. Oh and by the way 4-1, 4-1, 4-1, 4-1, 4-1. See you’s next season for our usual 6 points suckers!
Glenn - July 2nd, 2008 at 4:48 pm
stoney……absolute bollux yerself mate………Tino, Ginola, Rob Lee, Andy Cole……not to mention bagging Ferdinand, Batty Shearer
would you like me to go on ??
take yer head to the bog, man
stu - July 2nd, 2008 at 5:01 pm
yeah sky sports just says formally linked with portsmouth.
not sure why tottenhams names been thrown in?
perhaps a few newcastle fans wanted to feel theyve got one over spurs after spurs snatched modric from them?!
chrissy boy - July 2nd, 2008 at 5:05 pm
to all the spurs fans who are mocking newcastle, until the last couple of seasons you were the laughing stock of the premiership, and it must also be quite painfull being the crappest london team in the premiership…
JOHNNY G - July 2nd, 2008 at 5:14 pm
lads lads lads calm the fuck down. why are we bickering??? im spurs through and through and i love the Toon army and the way they play kamikazi football like us. The Toon have brought a player and i hope he does well for them as i have nothing against them lot but to be honest i have never seen him linked with us though. i would like to see both teams fly up the table next year and freshen the league up. we have have got bigger enemies to fight like the scum down the road so lets just leave the Toon in peace. COYS!

OK Stoney, lets throw some water on this fire of yours. You say Keegan couldn’t spot a decent player. How about picking David Ginola up for next to nothing, then there was Robert Lee, Andy Cole, David Batty, John Beresford, Gavin Peacock, Phillipe Albert, Peter Beardsley, Les Ferdinand, Tino Asprilla and not to mention a certain Alan Shearer, but hey none of them were decent players in your book. That must be why spurs shelled out for Ferdinand and Ginola.

I agree with the earlier Spurs fan-He is a good signing and will be good for Newcastle. It`s important that there are more clubs who can damage the `big four.`

Stoney: You have made possibly the two most stupid comments I have ever heard on a blog, cant be bothered to go into it as everyone but you will see it.
Spurs fan 2 - July 2nd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I hope he’s a good signing for you also. God only knows why some spurs fans are being so aggressive towards Newcastle. Save your energy for Le Arse, Chelscum and the Spammers.
Joseph - July 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
If Spurs were in for him, then why has it only just surfaced right now?
SPurs have made a bid for Capel and have been heavily linked to Bentley in the last 3 or 4 days…yet no mention of this guy EVER!
Never seen him play, so cannot comment.
More than happy with what Spurs have right now, and if we were really in for him, he would have joined us, simply put.
Ask Modric and Woodgate…2 quality signings.
Still, it is good to see other team trying to strengthen.
And we may just stop hearing all the nonsense from Geordies moaning that we always steal potential transfer targets from them!!!!
Glenn - July 2nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
stoney……haha….I forgot you’ve got a ‘real’ man in Jenas
I take it you’ve got nothing to say about the rest I mentioned
By the way….Ferdinand still says we were the best club he’s ever played for
xx
ChicagoToonArmy - July 2nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm
£9 Million for this guy, really!!.I don’t think so,I just can’t see Ashley spending that kind of cash, he’s a bit too canny!!.I would have preferred Lennon, but then again Spurs are Massive.(LOL).
hadrian - July 2nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm
actually , he bought his contract out for about 750k and we gave him a signing on fee .
as for spurs , sour grapes cos they can never beat us, nomatter how shit we are doing .
boater - July 2nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Keegan’s signing record is impressive over the years and that has a lot do with his knack for getting players to do the business under his stewardship. He obviously recognises the need to bring in an exciting - albeit slightly daft - player to get the sjp crowd going again… he is very pacey and has two good feet… young as well… also nice to see them do this deal quietly…. without the saga that so many transfers become now.
as for spurs fans… lads just get some points off us next season and that’s the best way to put one over us… can you see lennon or bentley getting in the argentine side?
Chicago Toon Army - July 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm

You are Bang on the Money there. The more competitive the league, then someone might have a chance of breaking the domination of Man Utd Chelsea et al.I ‘m not sure if it will be Spurs though, you need to keep Keane and you need to keep Woodgate fit and who comes in for Berbatov??.Respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
chrissy boy - July 2nd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
reply to joseph, woodgate cant stand up without going to accident and emergancy and moderic is an ugly cunt so i guess they fit the bill,,,,,,,have them.
Leo - July 2nd, 2008 at 10:59 pm
brillient for newcastle to make a signing finally because we have not since beye at the end of the summer transfer window and to be honest it made the place a bit cagey but now all the unhappyness and doubt has been lifted and the signing will hopefully be followed up by many more…
spurs fans please dont be angry about it, you signed modric…
Ronnieb - July 2nd, 2008 at 11:14 pm
Well said yiddo4ever and JOHHNY G both of our clubs should be striving to break the “big 4″ monopoly. Think Spurs are in a better position to do this if they can find some consistency. Hopefully a few more Keegan sinings and we can push on to a european spot.
JimB - July 2nd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Why are Newcastle fans getting so touchy about all this? Spurs fans haven’t been dissing Jonas. They have merely questioned the headline of this article that “Spurs have missed out” on Jonas. The truth is that Spurs are not and have never been seriously interested in Jonas - for the very good reason that their primary wing targets are David Bentley and Diego Capel. It’s not so hard to understand, really, and it is a ridiculous overreaction from Newcastle fans to assume that Spurs fans are dissing Jonas. We aren’t. We’re just saying that, regardless of how good a player Jonas may or may n0t be, Spurs were never interested. Capiche?
Jimmy the Yid - July 3rd, 2008 at 1:21 am
This Jonas fella bought out his contract and Newcastle picked him up on the free I read. Now thats good business. Ramos is spending money left right and centre, I hope things go right this season or he could be walking by xmas. Not that I celebrate xmas, being a Yid n all. Pennies!
Ben_BKK - July 3rd, 2008 at 6:16 am
JimB, have you been reading the comments on this site?????
About 5 people have just come straight out and said “He’s bollocks/crap/rubbish, let Newcastle have him, I’m glad we didn’t get him.”
How can you say that’s no one dissing Jonas, ffs…
Rab - July 3rd, 2008 at 7:45 am
“Why are Newcastle fans getting so touchy about all this? Spurs fans haven’t been dissing Jonas. ” Yes they have! read the comments!
Think this guy could be good for Newcastle. Good luck to spurs they have a cracking manager in Ramos.

In fact, I just realised that you were one of the people that started it lol…what a prick.
Leo - July 3rd, 2008 at 8:24 am
how come the spurs fans know that the club werent interested in jonas? just because they think they are going to get bentley or capel, are you board members of your lillywhites, i doubt it.
Davies - July 3rd, 2008 at 8:43 am
Just because Spurs fans didn’t know about him, doesn’t mean Spurs weren’t in for him.
Nobody knew he was coming to the premier league until yesterday.
For anybody who doubts this player’s quality, try to remember that he was selected to play in the Argentinan squad against Brazil.
JimB - July 3rd, 2008 at 8:46 am
Ben - yes, I wrote: “Utter crap. Spurs didn’t miss out. The wingers Spurs want are David Bentley and Diego Capel. If Jonas was even on Spurs’ list, he was well down the pecking order”.
In what way is that dissing Jonas? I simply pointed out that Jonas isn’t and never has been a serious target for Spurs. I didn’t say that Jonas is a bad player. He just isn’t a player that Ramos wants. Obviously, though, he is a player that Keegan wants. Horses for courses.
So enough of this nonsense. Isn’t it enough for you geordies that you have signed a decent player? Or is it really important to you to convince yourselves that you beat Spurs to his signature?
JimB - July 3rd, 2008 at 9:03 am
Leo - how come Spurs fans know that Spurs weren’t interested in Jonas? Well we can’t be absolutely sure.
But a far better question would be, how on earth do Newcastle fans know that Spurs WERE interested in Jonas? All evidence and common sense suggests otherwise.
Spurs have already signed Giovani Dos Santos. And they are well known to be chasing Diego Capel and David Bentley. Jonas may well have been on Spurs’ radar (after all, Ramos knows the Spanish market better than anyone at Newcastle) but the Argentinian winger was quite clearly not a serious target. If he had been, there is little doubt that Spurs would have made a bid by now. It’s not as if they have been shy in the transfer market this summer.
Furthermore, if Spurs had been seriously interested, I would hazard a guess that Jonas would have opted for Spurs over Newcastle - partly because of the attraction of European football next season but mostly because 0f Ramos, whose reputation in Spain is sky high.
It is quite clear to me that the idea that Newcastle “beat” Spurs to Jonas’ signature is nothing more than Newcastle fans making themselves feel better about being beaten by Spurs to Jonathan Woodgate and Luka Modric.
Never mind, eh? You can console yourselves with the thought that you did beat Spurs to the signatures of Scott Parker and Damien Duff.
Leo - July 3rd, 2008 at 10:04 am
well i havent seen a report from anywhere saying you werent in for him… maybe because im bias i dont read it properly?
most report state that spurs and pompey wanted him, who knows reports quite regularly are wrong (such as the reports that spurs stole modric from under our noses, i heard that spurs had been talking to him for a prolonged period before we moved in) quite frankly i couldnt care either way whether you were or not, all i care about is my beloved newcastle
Leo - July 3rd, 2008 at 10:08 am
firstly JimB this website is not a newcastle united blog its caughtoffside.com which is independant and has no bias either way…
also ramos may have a good knowledge of coaching in spain yes correct, but we have veterre jiminez and some other slanty eyed person who probably know an aweful lot, it was either jiminez or vettere who manufactured the signing of ramos for spurs… forgetting so quickly i see.
Ben_BKK - July 3rd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
JimB - sorry mate, I thought when you said “Utter crap” you were referring to Gutierrez, not the fact that Spurs were interested in him…
Ben_BKK - July 7th, 2008 at 9:07 am
A bit late, but “Spurs hope to hijack Portsmouth’s £8.3m bid for Real Mallorca winger Jonas Gutierrez. (The Independent) “.
Found that on a football site from back in April, so yes Spurs were involved, now stop your crying.
