Arsenal ready to smash record transfer fee for £20m perfect playmaker: Top class signing!
by Mr Comfort on July 6th, 2008Arsene Wenger is once again linked with this star turn and now it appears that one of the big stumbling blocks to a potential signing has been removed!
Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Andrei Arshavin after Chelsea ended their interest in the Russian playmaker yesterday. Arshavin has his heart set on a move to London because he believes it will be more valuable for his children to learn English than Spanish.
The Russian forward, who excelled at Euro 2008, is expected in London this week after his coach at Zenit St Petersburg, Dick Advocaat, gave him 12 days off to resolve his future.
A source close to the Russia playmaker explained that Arshavin, who values education sufficiently to have completed a university diploma in fashion design, is keen for his two-year-old son, Artyom, and his three-month-old daughter Yulia, to experience life in Britain.
Another source has confirmed that Arshavin has already made plans to learn English: “One of the main conditions [on Arshavin’s part] is studying English. That’s why a translator will be near Andrei when he arrives in London. He will teach him intensively for two months.”
Arshavin, 27, is seeking an annual contract of £6.3 million, while Zenit are holding out for at least a £20 million transfer fee. (Telegraph)
Depending on who you believe Arsenal either have countless resources to pull from as Wenger looks to improve his squad or they don’t have any cash at all! However given the seemingly imminent sales of Hleb and Adebayor they will have a huge wad to put towards the likes of this Russian genius. Arshavin, and I realise I am probably preaching to the converted with this statement, is sheer class, a real gem of a player who Arsene would not let slip out of his grasp if the chance presented itself. Could the signing really happen? Barcelona are also interested but then they have been connected with just about everyone, and if they are forking out 40m+ for the two Arsenal men and have already paid 23.5m on Daniel Alves, then surely they can’t keep accruing players indefinitely so maybe the Emirates side have a chance of capturing the Russian? Do Gunners fans think that Andrei could be the missing pieces of the Premier League title glory jigsaw?

David - July 6th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

fred - July 6th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
yaya plus lots of dosh from barca for ads and helb would be good deal.
kenny - July 6th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Not at the expense of our play maker I don’t think we need another playmaker
no 65 - July 6th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Hleb needs to be sold to Barca for this to become a possibility at all

Wenger seems to have made his point quite clear. Arsenal have to be quite prudent in the transfer market and make a profit for the next 17 years to pay for their stadium. That`s as things stand at the moment.
Now, should there be an injection of a few billion the situation would change overnight. I think this is the point Dein is making. Arsenal do need funds to compete, I`m convinced of that.

Jack, you make a very important point. I’m becoming more and more convinced that AFC cannot resist for much longer, a real injection of (foreign) capital, coupled with the much-needed return of David Dein.

really can anyone see arsene shelling out 20 mill on a 27 yr old no matter how good they are
freshgunner - July 6th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
you guy need to shut the fuck up with link us with all bullshit players
arsenal has a good team and tottenham and cheski wish the had players we had. please shut it with all the players. we are not sell nobody.
freshgunner - July 6th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
we’re skint. we ain’t gonna sign no one unless he a teenager and is on a free. at this moment i’m really annoyed that we have been HUMILIATED in the press by the fact that there has been an admission that we ARE A SELLING CLUB. Sack the board. GET THE RUSKI OR THE YANK.
Kenny - July 6th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
The board should get the finger out and give A.W. what ever he needs to bring us some silverware before he decides to go and all
dream on spuds - July 6th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
I agree with freshgunner what the fuck are the board doing?
if this paper talk is true about us being a selling club now to pay off the stadium we’d of been better off staying at highbury
17 more year’s of this shit staring up at manure & chavski
it look’s as if the board dont want someone to takeover cause there to busy lining there own pocket’s!
the only way forward is for the russian billionaire to take over
peter hill-wood can shove his moral’s up his arse the reason behind him not wanting a takeover is cause the russian is associated with david dein.
you would’nt blame arsene wenger if he wanted to leave how could he compete with chavski & manure if this is true.
geoffreid - July 6th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Freshgunner I couldnt agree more –right on the money sack the useless board and bring in the ruskie - no one would match us then.
Bob_Bobson - July 7th, 2008 at 1:44 am
The whole “selling club” statement is a bit fo a worry, doesn’t sound right & culd compromise us in the future
However, I don’t believe letting dodgy russians & Dein invest is the solution - Arsene’s been managing our budget on a shoe-string forever with just as good results as those with much larger funds (Newcastle, Spurs, etc)
6 more weeks of this (pointless speculation) & we’ll all go crazy…
in arsen we trust - July 7th, 2008 at 3:14 am
we need $$$$$$$$
so ask the current USELESS board to F off
and let the russians run the show
if we want to challenge the likes of looser clubs chels, man u, liver and even barca
WE NEED LOTS OF $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
dan - July 7th, 2008 at 6:28 am
agree w/ other dan, this will never happen. too short, too slow, clogs up the middle which is already too clogged up, and too damn out of shape(played three games at euros and spain regulars who played five games ran over him). 24 million, my the russians are heady these days.
BootyBanger - July 7th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Signing Arshavin will never happen, and frankly we dont need him, too expensive, too old and wages are too high. As for all this fuss about us being a selling club, Wengers quotes have been taken out of context, we have more than tripled our annual income with the emirates move, we cold afford to service our debt even without champions league qualification, with the highbury develpment in the pipeline, we have a huge cash injection coming in. As for Arsenal beinga selling club, if you look at our recent history…we are a selling club, but not in a bad way. We have never lost a player we wanted to keep hold of. despite what you may have read, we sold the likes of Anelka, Petit, Overmars, Wiltord, Viera and Henry. All sold at their peak (accept Anelka) once they had given their best for Arsenal. I find it amusing when people get rieled up about what they read in the papers, We support the best run club in the country…rest assured we wont loose anyone wenger wants to keep.
Vier4 - July 7th, 2008 at 11:10 am
judging him for 3 games in euro is not enough..plus he is already 28.. I think Wenger should go for David Silva, he is more talented and young.
chris gooner - July 7th, 2008 at 11:53 am
hes shit i think hes rubbish
valenciagooner - July 7th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
first of all with regards to Wenger stating we are a selling club this has been said so we dont over pay for any potential transfers FACT. There is not the amounts of money that other clubs have of course but there are funds there, forget Villa he is staying i live in valencia and it is quite clear he does not want to leave and if so it would be madrid or barca, as much as i highly rate him(valencia season ticket holder) if ade goes we need a tall(ish) striker to go with Eduardo (yes i know rvp is tall but we all know about his injuries) dont think we will sign arshavin unless the price is right but who knows, Nasri will be done in the next 8 days and if helb goes which seems def expect 2 more players, one in defence one playmaker, if ade goes expect santa cruz, stop panicking about us being aselling club and dont believe everything you read. COME ON YOU GUNNERS
RG - July 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
We’ll never sign Arshavin, not for that price anyway.
Silva’s the one - oh I forgot - we’ve got to SELL Hleb to buy Nasri & SELL Ade to buy anyone else. But it’s all Ade’s fault because HE’s the greedy c**t - yeah right!
Just like they tried to portay Anelka/Viera/Overmars/Petit/Henry etc etc when all the while it’s the clubs policy to sell the best & buy cheaper!
All you Arsenal fans slagging off Ade as greedy have been right stiched up!!!! We know the truth now don’t we Hill Wood.
wandarah - July 7th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
sacking the board and getting usmanov in?
you must seriously be retarded.
