Liverpool want £6m quality centre back: Could be a very clever signing
by Mr Comfort on July 6th, 2008 12 commentsRafa Benitez eyes up a very experienced campaigner to help beef up his defence.
Liverpool and Juventus have signalled their intention to sign VfB Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira, his agent has claimed.
It is understood that Meira has made no secret of his interest in a new challenge after six years of play with the German outfit, who finished in 6th place in Bundesliga.
The player’s agent, Roger Wittman, claims that Stuttgart have agreed to let the player leave in the close-season in case an offer from a big club is made.
“As soon as the player is on the transfer list, everything will happen very fast. There is always interest in a player with his qualities,” Wittman told Stuttgarter Zeitung.
Wittman further added that Liverpool and Juventus are both keeping tabs on his client. (goal.com)
The 30 year old Portuguese international is a solid defender and could be a very useful player to bring into the Liverpool squad. The capture of Skrtel in January was an inspired signing by Benitez and with Daniel Agger coming back from injury things look rosy in the Anfield defence but having a player like £6m rated Meira around to keep others on their toes would be a very good idea. This would be even more relevant should the side challenge on multiple fronts or suffer any long term injuries. How many more signings do Liverpool fans think that Rafa should sew up before the window closes and who ideally should those signings be?

If he’s a younger CB, I can understand but to replace the 34yr old Hyypia with a 30yr old is not very clever. BUT until he is signed and played poorly for us will I judge Rafa. YNWA!

Finally we are linked to an overseas player I have seen play on a regular basis. I can recall when I first saw him (his first match for Stuttgart). Awful to say the least. What really strikes about him is that whenever he does something of note it is something pretty poor like giving away a penalty or getting sent of for a very clumsy challenge. All of this happens in the German Bundesliga, which I think he can’t handle so how would he fare with the faster and more direct Premier League? Probably getting sent off every other week.
How we get linked to this nightmare of a player is beyond me, but he would fit in nicely at Newcastle who seem to love poor centre halfs (Bramble, Boumsong, do I need to say more?).

we won’t buy this guy. i read this story on goal.com a few days ago. it his his agent who claims” that liverpool have been in talks with him. anyone can claim that sort of thing. this is just rubbish. we have been linked with about 1 million players this transfer season so dont worry if you think meira will be joining our club. because he wont.
