Was selling Crouch to Portsmouth a good move by the Liverpool boss?
by Dexter on July 8th, 2008 Lankster Peter Crouch completed his move to Portsmouth last night, thus giving Rafa B a little more money to play with in the transfer market. But will Rafa be stroking his chin and wondering if he’s made a mistake?
The Times reports that:
Peter Crouch was putting the finishing touches to his £11million return to Portsmouth last night, a move that he hopes will reinvigorate his England career and that Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, hopes will allow him to secure his top targets.
Liverpool have been among the few serious movers during a quiet summer in the transfer market, signing Andrea Dossena from Udinese for £8million and Philipp Degen from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, but Benítez has encountered frustration at the top end of the market, with Aston Villa demanding £18million for Gareth Barry and Tottenham Hotspur looking for a similar fee for Robbie Keane, the Ireland forward. (The Times)
So is the sale of Crouch a good move, as it will partially replenish the Liverpool coffers or should a club as “big” as Liverpool not need to sell before they can buy?

Yes

Well he hasnt actually sold him yet, but assuming the deal does go through. Yes it is good business, a player who is a fringe player at best at Liverpool being sold giving Rafa cash to out and buy other players who can improve the Liverpool squad.
Saying that as a Pompey fan I’m looking forward to Crouch joining us, Harry waving his magic career reviving wand and us having 2 top English strikers causing havoc in the Premer League next season.

Its not a mistake to sell a player who mainly sits on the bench and only has a year left on his contract. Further more to get £10m for him after we only paid about 6m is good skills by Benitez. On the other hand, i think Crouch will be class for Pompey and no doubt that playing every week and scoring 10, 15 or maybe even 20 goals next season people will look back and say it was a mistake to let him go. The key will be who Benitez buys? If he continues to try and strenthen an already solid middle of the park i think his days are numbered. To be a success he needs to buy QUALITY on the WINGS. And i don’t mean Riera or Bentley! Silva and Babel swapping flanks during the game would be dangerous.

Benitez didn’t have any choice. Crouch was offered a new contract but he turned it down, not wanting to be a bench-warmer. With only a year left on his corrent contract, it was sell him now or let him go for free next summer. It’s a good bit of business all round. Pompey will benefit from a decent player with an excellent atitude, Crouchino will benefit because he won’t be up agaist Torres in a 4-5-1 and Liverpool will benefit because we’ll have picked up a £4m profit that can be spent on someone who wants to be at Anfield.

it will only be a good move if rafa brings in another striker to produce the goods for us. although if crouch is sold for £11 million as a goal scoring england international, why the hell is that annoying chap o’neil looking 18 million from us for barry???

Yes Rafa, get your thinking cap on - say bollocks to Barry and buy Ashley Young instead… or when the blueshite sell Andrew Foetus to Sunderland get in there for Kenwynne Jones. If he brings some 2nd rate Spanish striker to replace Crouch then he’ll be off next summer.

what a pathetic article
asking a question without relating to the answer in any way .
with a copy paste of some irrelevant other transfers info from the times.

am happy for crouch, he is a good player with talent he deserves 1st team apperances, as because at liverpool he will never play regular football, good luck to crouch. 10 m for him is a bonus for us…….

I think that Rafa may regret selling Crouch if and when he goes, if Torres get injured who else is gonna score the goals for the Scousers??
