Liverpool manager confirms: ‘Villa is on our list’
by stresster on July 9th, 2008You might have thought Rafael Benitez would be sick to the back teeth of the name Villa this summer, conjuring up the image of an angry Irishman refusing to sell his captain to the Spaniard (do you think this has featured in his dreams?). Nevertheless, Sky Sports have revealed that the Liverpool manager is hungry for more and is desperately seeking David Villa to become the Reds’ second striker.
Benitez, who brought fellow Spaniard Fernando Torres to Anfield from Atletico Madrid last summer, said: “We have Torres, Andrei Voronin, Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard, who can play as a second striker.
“But we will try to bring in another option. Villa is a player we know all about and he is on our list. But maybe it will be difficult.”
Too right it will be tricky, with Valencia’s bumped-up asking price and plenty of other clubs with large hats to throw into the proverbial ring! Nevertheless, these comments will have many Pool fans salivating at the prospect of reuniting a pair who helped Spain win Euro 2008 and would surely collect a veritable shedload of goals for the Reds next season. Are Liverpool fans crossing their fingers and toes that this transfer happens?

Seeing as we’re broke i can’t see it happen… we should ask sponsers for the transfer money, People would come far and wide to see Torres and Villa playing together! So if it benefits the Premier league, maybe the premier league should make the deal happen.
I understand of course im talking a load of jibberish, one can wish.
I have a perculiar feeling somehow this recent news from Rafa is just a smokescreen for another deal.
dibbler - July 9th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I think the smoke screen is telling everyone we have no money. the last time rafa was struggling for funds he kicked up a fuss but not a word has been said so i think he has plenty of money to spend just wants to keep it under his hat so we dont get mugged on transfers. You only have to look at the barry saga to realise people are trying it on with the big clubs and there never ending pockets.
Bring on Villa!!!

We have about 30 mil to spend right now. (Broke lol)
I think torres plays the kety in this signing.
Perhaps villa and torres could have been speaking, and villa asked torres how it felt to score the winning goal in the european cup final. To which torres would reply
“Nothing compared to what it feels like scoring at anfield infront of the KOP”
Maybe just maybe.
We shall see

smells like a bluff to me, say we’re after villa in the hope that makes keane/spurs panic and quickly agree a deal to sell.
Banksy - July 9th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
why would this news make Spurs panic ?? They’re hardly tryin to get rid of him r they ……

Is the credit crunch over? Where’s the money tree?? The clock’s ticking for Hicks and he needs a bank to refinance his loans. If the terms are even harsher it will be the club that pays. Rafa only manages the team. Hicks and Gillette control the money. They can’t perpeually borrow themselves out of debt. Unfortunately Spurs are in a far better financial position and don’t want to sell Keane. He only recently extended his contract. This is the real world.

I can’t see him leaving Spain for the forseeable future, which may not be a bad thing. Last season the 4-2-3-1 formation worked brilliantly in the EPL, but the wingers let us down. So what Liverpool need is a quality striker as a back up for Torres when he gets injured or rested. Villa is a big player who is in demand, so will not settle for this role. Babel, however, would be perfect for it.
What we would really need to do then is put all of our efforts into buying Villa’s teammate, Silva, who would sort out the winger problem, and allow Babel to replace Torres when needed.

At last Rafa wants me!!
michael - July 9th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
No villa is an amense player but as u saw in euro 2008 he is not a good partner 4 torres dis wudn’t b a good deal please rafa don’t buy him
Sam~ - July 9th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
If we want to win the league then we need someone like villa to make the team better
Rafael Benitez - July 9th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I’m buying villa
Lucas - July 9th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I think dibbler is right, if we have money rafa is the type of guy who would keep it quiet so we arent ripped off on transfers like man u have been the last few years, chelsea too. I mean 18 mil for Carrick?? theres something going on “for sure.”
Ben - July 9th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Would be a great idea, quality striker!
lfc - July 9th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
the last time we were broke we bought babel and torres
0500Silva - July 9th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
maybe silva and villa this time
Andy - July 10th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
“the last time we were broke we bought babel and torres”
The last time we were broke the yanks had restructured their loans and borrowed more money which paid for babel and torres. We were broke and still are.
Ticky - July 12th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Let’s be serious here.
Money from Yanks for transfers: £20m.
Sales: Crouch (£11m), Guthrie (£2.5m), Riise (£4m), Le Tallec (£2m ?).
Sales to come: Alonso (£15m), Finnan (£1.5m), Itandje (£2m), Carson (£6m), Leto (£2m)….and possibly Pennant or Benayoun too. Plus saving £70k per week now that Kewell’s gone. You do the sums!
Don’t be fooled. Rafa’s being clever not declaring how much money he has to spend because he’ll get ripped off like Chelsea always do.
Don’t worry, we’ll end up with Barry and Keane - plus a class winger. Rafa knows what he’s doing.
