Arsenal line up £11m quality wideman: Excellent player at a good price

After reportedly losing hope of signing Andrei Arshavin, Arsene Wenger has targeted another member of Russia’s impressive Euro 2008 squad.
Reports in Russia claim that Arsenal could consider switching Russian targets by pursuing an interest in CSKA Moscow’s Yuri Zhirkov.
The 24-year-old was outstanding for Russia in Euro 2008, excelling as an attacking left back, but prefers to play in a more advanced role down the flank.
With Gael Clichy firmly installed in the Gunners side, it is claimed that Arsene Wenger has thought about making an approach to Zhirkov to help counter the loss of Barcelona-bound Alexander Hleb.(Setanta Sports)
£11m-rated Zhirkov was very impressive in Euro 2008 and was a constant menace going forward. It’s easy to see why Arsenal would be interested in signing the CSKA man, especially now that Hleb is near to an Emirates exit. Yuri’s bombing runs could see him pairing up nicely with Gael and he would fit nicely into the Gunners squad. What do Arsenal fans think of Zhirkov, and are they still hopeful of persuading Arshavin to move to north London as well?

i feel wenger would inclined to recruit from with in because when to playmakers they have more than enough player in our reserves that can step i feel but he cant then then look in market,and you dont know if hleb is leaving you cant believe what read in papers.

He is very good, but i thought we were after Nasri, and why do u think we are going to buy him, we have Vela, Rosicky, there is no way we will buy this player, we don’t really need him, we need Micah Richards, let Song play in the middle alongside the MAESTRO Fabrigas, Walcott on the right, Rosicky(if fit) should always play on the left, Nasri can come on in the second half, Van Persie and Eduardo(if fit) or Bentner who imo is better than Ade.

Yuriy Zhirkov is much better for Arsenal than Arshavin. And he’s much more stable and physically stronger. Trust me - I watched many Russian Premier League games here, in Russia.
Though, I think Zhirkov, like Arshavin, is surely overpriced. Their agents are going crazy after a couple of good games at Euro-2008.
Don’t pay more than £6-8m for any russian player.
I hope, AW won’t choose Arshavin.

I’d be surprised if this transfer happens, but I’d certainly welcome it. If Hleb goes for 15 million we’d profit 4 million and have a genuine left wing rather than a central mid played out of position.
Zhirkov is a great player and playing in front of Clichy would make our left flank extremely strong.

Nothing against the guy, he’s a decent player, but of all our youngsters isnt Traore the next man up, and as we saw at the end of the season more effective as a wingback than a fullback

As for Zhirkov, I think he will adapt well to the premiership better than Nasri. But we shall see at the start of the season who comes to Arsenal.

Excellence player & pure quality. He has full of determination, power, skill, strenght, never say die attitude & works his socks off as well. In front of Clichy, spot on. Hope to see him in Arsenal colour in up coming season, tho. Micah Richards need to be swapt with Gallas (already past his best). Maybe Gallas + 15m & its a worth deal. Kolo Toure + Micah Richards + Bacary Sagna + Gael Clichy = Dream defence line-up.

Arsene is a man who plays his cards close to his chest it is very hard to speculate on who he intends to bring to the Emirates but believe me rare faces will join Arsenal.
I wouldn’t realy sign players who develop in their late twenties and only shines at tournaments ( remember Suker) so Arshavin should not be signed after all he is overpriced and might be a Suker.

I’d rather rock on with Traore, who’s wouldn’t cost us anything, than spend 11 million for this guy. I watched Traore in the reserves last season and I think Wenger got it wrong trying to play Diaby out wide left when the writing on the wall was so plain to see. When Rosicky went down, we should have played Traore as he could have given us a spark that we desperately needed. If nothing else, you could have brought his pace and power on late in the game and he could have made a difference.
